The error messages you may see
Windows may report:
- “kbdusr.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because kbdusr.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because kbdusr.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “kbdusr.dll could not be loaded.”
- “kbdusr.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The exact wording depends on your Windows release and the application that triggered the load. The safest first response is to repair Windows component files with DISM and System File Checker, then restart.
The 60-second answer
kbdusr.dll is a Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component commonly identified as Dvorak Right-Hand US English Keyboard Layout. It is not part of Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game installation.

Do not download a replacement copy from a DLL website. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish. This repairs the Windows component store first, then checks and replaces protected system files. Microsoft documents this process in its guide to using System File Checker to repair missing or corrupted system files.

If the error occurs in only one application, repair or reinstall that application from its official source as well. The application may be the first process that causes Windows to load kbdusr.dll, without owning the file itself.
What kbdusr.dll does
kbdusr.dll belongs to the Microsoft Windows operating system. Its description or internal name is commonly shown as Dvorak Right-Hand US English Keyboard Layout, with Microsoft Corporation listed as the publisher.
Windows uses keyboard-layout components through its keyboard and text-input subsystem. These components help Windows interpret keyboard input and make layouts available to the operating system and applications.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou may see the error even if you have never deliberately selected the Dvorak layout. Windows or an application may enumerate installed layouts, initialize input services, inspect available keyboard mappings, or load a layout indirectly. A program can therefore expose a damaged system component that you never knowingly used.
The file is not an ordinary application plug-in. It is also not normally repaired by COM registration.
Where the file normally resides
On a 64-bit Windows installation, the expected locations are:
%WINDIR%System32kbdusr.dll
%WINDIR%SysWOW64kbdusr.dll
System32 normally contains the native 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows components. Those names are counterintuitive, so do not use the folder name alone to decide which file belongs in which location.
The exact file version, size, architecture, and hash vary by Windows release, edition, architecture, and servicing level. Do not treat a version or file size found on another machine as a universal reference.
To inspect the file without changing anything:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32. - Press Enter.
- Search for
kbdusr.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures and Details tabs.
If the file exists in the expected directory but Windows still reports that it cannot load it, the problem may be corruption, an incompatible component, damaged dependencies, security software interference, or a system-wide servicing problem.
A copy found in a user-writable folder, a temporary directory, an application folder, or an unexpected drive deserves additional investigation. Do not replace it simply because its filename matches.
Is kbdusr.dll safe?
A genuine copy supplied by Windows and signed by Microsoft is a normal operating-system component. The filename alone does not prove that every copy is safe.
Treat the file as suspicious when:
- It appears outside the normal Windows component locations.
- Its digital signature is missing or invalid.
- Antivirus software identifies a specific copy as malicious.
- The error began after installing an untrusted program or crack.
- Multiple files with the same name appear in unrelated folders.
To check the signature:
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to the copy being loaded or reported.
- Right-click
kbdusr.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A valid signature is useful evidence, but it does not replace a full malware investigation when the file is in an unexpected location. Run Microsoft Defender or your organization’s approved endpoint-security scan.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the best first repair when the file is missing, corrupt, incompatible, or damaged across the operating system.
Open an elevated terminal
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Terminal. - Right-click Windows Terminal.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
You can use Command Prompt or PowerShell as administrator instead. The commands below work from an elevated command-line window.
Run DISM first
Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Press Enter and let the operation complete. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for protected system files. Microsoft’s technical procedure is described in Repair a Windows Image.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Do not close the terminal merely because progress appears to pause. If DISM completes successfully, continue with SFC.
Run System File Checker
Enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations. It may also report that corrupted files were found and successfully repaired. Either result is followed by a restart and a retest of the application or operation that produced the error.
Restart Windows:
- Open Start.
- Select the Power icon.
- Click Restart.
- Sign in and retry the affected program.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what system problems it detects when repeatedly hunting through SFC and DISM results becomes difficult; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for this Windows repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf SFC cannot repair everything
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, create a readable summary of the repair entries:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open the sfcdetails.txt file on your desktop and search for kbdusr.dll. This helps establish whether SFC actually examined or attempted to repair that component.
If the file is not mentioned, the visible application error may involve a different dependency, a broken application, or a security product. If it is mentioned but remains unrepaired, continue with Windows Update and the recovery options below.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates, then repeat the repair
A failed or incomplete servicing operation can leave protected components inconsistent. Installing pending updates may provide the correct replacement files and servicing metadata.

- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Once updates are complete, run DISM and SFC again in an elevated terminal.
The exact Settings layout differs between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Look for the Windows Update page if the labels are arranged differently.
Do not assume that an update-related error requires downloading kbdusr.dll separately. Windows servicing is designed to maintain protected operating-system files as a set.
Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If the error appears only when starting one program, determine whether the program has its own repair function before reinstalling Windows components repeatedly.
Use Windows app repair options
For a supported desktop application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its menu or select the application entry.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not solve the problem and Reset is offered, understand that Reset may remove application settings or local data. Back up important application data first.
Recommended Free Tools
Some traditional desktop programs do not appear with these controls. In that case:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Change, Repair, or a vendor-provided maintenance option.
- Follow the installer’s repair instructions.
For a game or launcher, use its Verify files, Repair, or equivalent command before reinstalling the entire game. If the error references a Windows system path, continue with DISM and SFC even after verifying the game.
If repair fails, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the vendor’s official source. A program-specific failure does not prove that the program owns kbdusr.dll; it may simply be the first process to request the damaged Windows component.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a genuine file after a false detection, or it may block a tampered copy. Do not immediately disable protection or restore a file based only on its filename.
Use your security product’s quarantine history:
- Open Windows Security or your organization’s approved security application.
- Select Virus & threat protection or the equivalent.
- Open Protection history or Quarantine.
- Look for an event involving
kbdusr.dll. - Review the full path, detection name, and action taken.
- Restore the file only when the path and signature identify it as a genuine Microsoft Windows component and your security policy permits restoration.
- Update the security product.
- Run a full scan.
If the file was found in an unexpected application or user folder, do not restore it merely to make the error disappear. Investigate the program and run a malware scan instead.
After restoring a verified Windows component, run DISM and SFC, restart, and test again. If the security product repeatedly removes the file, contact the security vendor or your administrator rather than adding a broad exclusion.
Fix 5: Check the disk and filesystem
Repeated corruption can be caused by storage or filesystem problems rather than one isolated DLL.
First back up important files. Then open an elevated terminal:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Terminal. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk C: /scan
This performs an online scan of the system volume. Review the result for filesystem errors or indications of storage trouble.
Do not automatically run an offline repair or schedule a restart-based disk operation without understanding the effect on the computer. If errors return, check drive health using your organization’s approved tools and plan for replacement when hardware evidence warrants it.
Fix 6: Investigate a recent system change
If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, security-policy change, or other system modification, record what changed before attempting more repairs.
Possible recovery steps include:
- Uninstalling a recently installed update where Windows provides that option.
- Removing a recently installed utility.
- Using System Restore if restore points are available.
- Returning a system or security configuration to its supported state.
- Contacting your organization’s IT administrator before changing a managed machine.
To check restore options:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Review available restore points.
- Choose one created before the error began, if appropriate.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
System Restore does not replace a backup and may not be available on every computer.

kbdusr.dll is a Windows keyboard-layout component, not a conventional keyboard hardware driver. Device Manager is therefore not the normal place to restore this file.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET merely because an error mentions a DLL. Those packages do not normally provide kbdusr.dll.
Device Manager is relevant when the failure began with a keyboard, input device, chipset, or system-driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and any relevant Human Interface Devices category.
- Right-click the affected hardware.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only with a trusted manufacturer or Windows source.
- Restart and test.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which of many device drivers is stale; its free scan identifies driver issues, while installation is performed by the full version, and updating a driver is not a substitute for repairing Windows components.

Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
regsvr32.exe registers certain DLLs that expose the appropriate COM registration entry points. Keyboard-layout DLLs are not normally repaired through COM registration.
Running a command such as:
regsvr32 kbdusr.dll
may produce an entry-point or registration error. Even if a command reports something unexpected, it does not restore Windows ownership, component-store metadata, architecture, or the protected-file relationship.
Use DISM and SFC for a damaged Windows component. Do not add arbitrary registration commands to a repair checklist.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why manually copying the DLL is risky
Copying kbdusr.dll from another computer, an old backup, or a download site can create a second problem:
- The file may belong to a different Windows build.
- It may have the wrong architecture.
- It may not match the component store.
- It may be altered or malicious.
- It may have dependencies that do not match the target system.
- It may be placed in the wrong directory.
Never copy a 32-bit file into System32 or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64 based on guesswork. Windows servicing is the supported way to restore this component.
There is no known official Microsoft standalone kbdusr.dll redistributable. Avoid generic DLL download sites sites, which can provide malware, an incorrect version, or a file that hides the underlying Windows corruption without fixing it.
If DISM and SFC still fail
When standard repair does not work, proceed in increasing order of impact.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use installation media as a repair source
DISM can use compatible Windows installation media as a source when the local component store is damaged. The source must match the relevant Windows release and architecture. Because the exact command depends on the media’s image index and file format, use Microsoft’s documented Windows image-repair procedure rather than guessing a source path.
Perform an in-place repair installation
An in-place repair installation reinstalls Windows while normally preserving personal files and installed applications. Back up important data first, disconnect unnecessary external devices, and use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture.
Follow Microsoft’s supported installation instructions and read each screen carefully. Do not choose a clean installation unless you intend to erase the existing Windows environment.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need the Dvorak keyboard layout for kbdusr.dll to matter?
No. Windows or an application can load or inspect keyboard-layout components without you consciously selecting Dvorak. The error does not prove that your active keyboard layout is Dvorak.
Is kbdusr.dll a virus?
A Microsoft-signed copy in the expected Windows directory is a normal system component. A copy in an unexpected location, with an invalid signature or suspicious security alert, requires investigation.
Should I download kbdusr.dll?
No. There is no known official standalone Microsoft redistributable for this file. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Is this a Visual C++ or .NET problem?
Normally, no. kbdusr.dll is part of Windows and is not normally restored by installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
Does regsvr32 repair it?
Generally, no. Keyboard-layout DLLs are not normally repaired through COM registration. Use Windows servicing tools.
Which folder should contain it on 64-bit Windows?
The expected locations are %WINDIR%System32 and, where the 32-bit Windows component is present, %WINDIR%SysWOW64. Do not exchange files between those directories manually.
What if only one game or application reports the error?
Repair or verify that application first, then reinstall it from its official source if necessary. Also run DISM and SFC if the error references a Windows path or if other applications show similar failures.

What is the correct order for DISM and SFC?
Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the component store first, giving SFC a healthier source for protected files. Restart after both commands complete.
