Ransom is a side quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II in which Jan of Suchotlesky asks Henry to negotiate for his brother Peter, held in Sigismund’s camp. Complete the main quest “Speak of the Devil,” then look for Jan near Danemark. The investigation and available reinforcements can vary by save, so follow the active journal objectives and make a manual save before choosing Jan’s or Laszlo’s plan.
Where does Ransom start in KCD2?
Ransom is a Kuttenberg-region side quest given by Jan of Suchotlesky. The reported prerequisite is completing the main quest “Speak of the Devil.” One documented start is a road encounter near Danemark, where Jan is wounded after an attack. KCD2.org’s guide, updated September 15, 2026, recommends checking Jan at the Old Kutna wagoners’ inn if the road encounter does not appear. Some reports place him in an upstairs room there, but the inn is a fallback to check, not a guaranteed trigger for every save.

How do you investigate Peter’s disappearance?
After speaking with Jan, follow the active journal objectives into Sigismund’s camp. The route can point Henry toward camp contacts such as Father Bohumil, Musa, and Milada; speak with the people indicated by the current objective rather than assuming every guide’s sequence will match your playthrough.
Find Laszlo Farkas and continue following the investigation markers to learn what happened to Peter. PowerPyx’s walkthrough describes questioning a prisoner other than Peter, who can reveal where to look for the body. KCD2.org also advises using the active objective because witness availability and required steps may differ. Once you have the findings, report back to Jan before moving into the recruitment and meeting stages.

How many allies can join Ransom?
There is no dependable universal ally count. Guides list different possible groups, and recruitment can depend on earlier quest outcomes, whether particular characters survived, and the state of the game. Ask each available contact about Ransom in your own save, then proceed with the allies you can recruit; a roster copied from another playthrough is not a completion requirement.
Official Deep Silver Patch 1.3 notes document two quest-related fixes: a decision missing from a specific dialogue and the Zimburg brothers being unavailable as reinforcements if “Skeleton in the Closet” had been completed. These fixes establish that particular recruitment or dialogue problems existed; they do not mean every missing ally is a bug. A later KCD2.org guide also reports a Mikesh/Kozliek reinforcement issue addressed in Patch 1.4, but the official patch-note evidence cited here confirms the Patch 1.3 fixes only.

Should you side with Jan or Laszlo?
At the final meeting, Henry chooses between Jan’s revenge plan and Laszlo’s offer. The decision determines which group Henry fights and changes the reported loot. Save manually before the meeting if you want the option to revisit the decision.
| Choice | Combat side | Reported loot |
|---|---|---|
| Support Jan | Fight Laszlo’s group; Jan’s side is the one Henry supports. | PowerPyx reports 125 groschen and Peter’s sword. |
| Support Laszlo | Fight Jan’s side. | PowerPyx reports Peter’s armor and sword, and about 500 groschen looted from Jan. |
These figures are walkthrough reports, not guaranteed totals. KCD2.org cautions that what Henry can take may vary with survivors, ownership, and what the player loots. The outcome of the battle can also be affected by which allies are available in your save. Neither choice is objectively best: decide based on the side you want Henry to support and the route-specific rewards that matter to you.

Prepare for the fight
If you support Jan, repair your armor and prepare for a group fight. The exact difficulty depends on your equipment and the allies available in your playthrough; the number of reinforcements listed in another guide is not a reliable measure of what you will face.
