kd_02_14e4.dll is a Microsoft-shipped KDNET transport module for Broadcom PCI network adapters. If Windows reports that it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows components first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What kd_02_14e4.dll is
KDNET is Microsoft’s system for kernel debugging over a network. Hardware-specific transport modules allow Windows debugging tools to communicate through supported network adapters. Microsoft documents kd_02_14e4.dll as Broadcom’s KDNET extensibility module.

The historical version and size records are not confirmed Microsoft package records, so do not use them to select a download. A legitimate installation may contain a different version appropriate to the current Windows build.
If the file is present as a Windows component, it can exist even when the computer has no Broadcom adapter. Its presence alone does not prove that Broadcom hardware is installed.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because kd_02_14e4.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because kd_02_14e4.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting kd_02_14e4.dll.”
- “Error loading kd_02_14e4.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “kd_02_14e4.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are observed Windows error-message variants, not file-specific diagnoses from Microsoft.
“Missing” can mean the file was removed, quarantined, or never installed correctly. “Specified module could not be found” can also describe a failed dependency or loading context rather than the named file alone. A popup naming this DLL does not prove that the application displaying it genuinely requires KDNET.
On a normal consumer computer, the most likely explanations are damaged Windows files, an interrupted update, antivirus quarantine, an unusual boot-debugging configuration, or an installer that is incorrectly requesting a boot component.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
Servicing updates can restore missing protected components and correct an incomplete Windows installation.
- Press Windows-I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Check whether the original error returns.
On Windows 10, Windows Update is also under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Use Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions if the update screen behaves differently.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair path for a missing or damaged Windows component. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and System File Checker then replaces damaged protected system files.
- Select Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It may take some time and can appear to pause. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Let the verification reach 100 percent. Restart Windows and repeat the action that produced the DLL message.

If DISM says that source files could not be found, connect to the internet, install pending updates, restart, and run the commands again. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing. If it reports that it could not repair some files, continue to the persistent-error section below.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Defender or another security product may have removed a damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected system file. Do not restore it automatically just because an application says it is missing.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that identifies
kd_02_14e4.dll. - Confirm the detection path, file location, and detection name.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan before allowing anything back.
Only restore or allow the file if you can verify that it is a genuine Windows component and the system is clean. Otherwise, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Microsoft explains these decisions in Protection History in the Windows Security app.

Fix 4: Inspect and repair the Broadcom adapter
The DLL is related to Broadcom hardware support in the KDNET debugging path, but reinstalling a network driver is not the same as replacing this DLL. Use this branch only if Device Manager reports a Broadcom adapter problem, the adapter disappeared, or network functionality changed at the same time.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a Broadcom device with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Select the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the adapter.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain the driver from the computer manufacturer’s official support page or use Windows Update. For a persistent device problem, right-click the adapter, choose Uninstall device, confirm, restart, and allow Windows to detect it again. Do not select an option to remove unrelated driver packages unless you understand which package is being removed.

Fix 5: Check whether kernel debugging is enabled
This matters mainly on developer workstations, driver-test systems, and managed computers. KDNET setup can involve kdnet.exe, BCDEdit, WinDbg, a supported network adapter, and PCI bus parameters.
If you intentionally use kernel debugging, do not disable it. Check the configuration with an elevated Command Prompt:

Look for debugging-related entries and record the configuration before changing anything. Microsoft’s automatic KDNET setup documentation explains the supported workflow.
If debugging is not intentional, have the system administrator or developer who configured it review the boot settings. Avoid deleting entries blindly, especially on a machine used for driver testing. If a recent debugging setup caused the problem, undo that setup using the documented KDNET and BCDEdit procedure, then restart.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error started after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup operation, or security-product action, System Restore may return the system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier state. Personal files are not normally removed.

- Press Windows-R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
Use a restore point only when its date and affected changes make sense. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process.

No authoritative source identifies a particular game or ordinary application that requires kd_02_14e4.dll. If the popup appears inside a launcher, installer, or application, the requesting program may be broken or may be incorrectly checking for a Windows component.
First complete Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Then:
- Open the application’s official launcher.
- Use its Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking option if the launcher identifies its own installation.
- Install the application’s updates.
- Run the application as administrator only when its publisher specifically recommends it.
- Reinstall the application from its official installer if its own files remain damaged.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears. Those runtimes are unrelated unless the application independently reports a missing runtime.

Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. A copied file may also fail signature checks or leave the damaged component store untouched.

Windows component repair should restore the version intended for the installed build. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows Recovery, or an official application installer instead.
Do not copy it between system folders
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Do not copy a 32-bit or 64-bit file between those folders, and do not put it in an application directory to silence an error.
Do not run regsvr32
This is not a COM or ActiveX server. KDNET modules expose the special KdInitializeLibrary interface rather than the registration entry points expected by regsvr32. Running this command is irrelevant:

Registration will normally fail or accomplish nothing.
Avoid registry cleaners and automatic DLL fixers
Registry cleaning cannot rebuild a Windows component or correct a failed KDNET loading context. Repair the operating system or the application that is actually damaged.
If the error remains after DISM and SFC
Check the SFC record at:
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log
Then confirm the Windows edition and build under Settings > System > About, review Protection history, and consider whether a recent update, driver, cleanup tool, or debugging configuration preceded the failure.
For Windows 11, supported systems may offer Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Details are available in Microsoft’s Windows repair reinstall instructions.
If the machine has a restore point from before the failure, use System Restore. If Windows cannot boot, enter Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options, then try Startup Repair, System Restore, or Uninstall Updates. Microsoft documents this path in Startup Repair.
FAQ
Is kd_02_14e4.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. Microsoft documents it as Broadcom’s KDNET transport extensibility module. Its presence or absence does not by itself indicate malware.
Does it belong in C:WindowsSystem32?
A 64-bit copy installed as a Windows system component belongs in the Windows system area, typically System32. Do not manually create the file there or copy it from another computer.
Is it the normal Broadcom network driver?
No. It is a kernel-debugging network transport module. A Broadcom adapter driver can be relevant if Device Manager shows a hardware problem, but reinstalling that driver does not justify manually replacing the DLL.
