You may see messages such as “kdscli.dll is missing from your computer,” “kdscli.dll was not found,” or “The specified module could not be found.” A damaged or missing kdscli.dll is usually a Windows component problem, not a missing game file or Visual C++ runtime.
The 60-second answer
KdsCli.dll is the Microsoft Key Distribution Service Provider. Windows uses it with the Key Distribution Service (KdsSvc), group Managed Service Accounts (gMSAs), Active Directory, Kerberos-related operations, and Windows event logging.

The normal path is:
%SystemRoot%System32KdsCli.dll
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website and do not begin with regsvr32. First install pending Windows updates, restart, then repair Windows with DISM followed by System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends this order because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source. See Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions.

What kdscli.dll belongs to
kdscli.dll is part of Microsoft Windows. Microsoft documentation identifies it as the provider Windows uses when looking for Key Distribution Service server components. The component is relevant to:
- Microsoft Key Distribution Service
- The
KdsSvcservice - Group Managed Service Accounts
- Active Directory environments
- Kerberos-related key and password operations
- Windows Event Log entries for
Microsoft-Windows-KdsSvc
It is not normally a file supplied by a particular game, desktop application, Visual C++ package, DirectX installation, or .NET runtime.
A regular desktop program can still display the error. Windows may load system components on behalf of an application, launcher, service, management tool, or security product. An application may also report a loader failure even when the actual problem is a Windows dependency rather than a file bundled with that application.
Recommended Free Tools
Check whether the file exists
Open Start, type Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Run:
where /r "%SystemRoot%" kdscli.dll
A normal result should point to a Windows directory, typically:
C:WindowsSystem32KdsCli.dll
If the command finds nothing, the file may be missing, quarantined, or damaged. If it finds a copy in a Downloads folder, temporary directory, user profile, or unrelated application folder, do not trust that copy.
You can inspect the expected file with PowerShell:
- Open Start.
- Search for PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32KdsCli.dll" |
Select-Object FullName,Length,LastWriteTime,VersionInfo
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32KdsCli.dll"
A legitimate Windows copy should be under the Windows directory and show a valid Microsoft signature. File versions, sizes, and architecture vary according to the Windows release and servicing level, so do not select a replacement by matching its filename or size.
Understand the exact error
“kdscli.dll is missing” or “was not found”
This usually means the loader could not find the file in the location or search path expected by Windows. If it is absent from System32, repair Windows rather than copying in a downloaded file.
“The specified module could not be found”
This wording does not always mean kdscli.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, or damaged.
This can also involve loader-path differences. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows does not use every system path in the same way as a 64-bit process. Do not copy a 64-bit system DLL beside a 32-bit program, and do not assume that placing another copy in SysWOW64 will solve the problem.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
This commonly indicates a corrupt, mismatched, incomplete, or improperly replaced Windows file. It is a reason to run component repair, not a reason to try several DLL downloads.
Fix 1: Install updates, restart, and repair Windows
This is the safest first repair for a missing or damaged system component.
Install pending updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
After restarting, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent.
Restart Windows again and open the application or service that showed the error.
A successful repair may report that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, restart once and run the SFC command again. If DISM itself fails, make a note of its error and continue to the repair options below rather than copying kdscli.dll manually.
If you want a guided way to identify damaged Windows components instead of repeatedly guessing between repair commands, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the direct repair route.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and recent system changes
Security software may quarantine a system file, although the quarantine record alone does not prove that the file was safe or that the antivirus caused the problem.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
KdsCli.dll. - Check its location and signature before restoring anything.
Restore a file only when it was located in the Windows directory and is identified as a Microsoft-signed system component. If malware may have been involved, run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan first:

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan).
- Select Scan now.
Also consider what happened immediately before the error:
- A Windows update was installed or rolled back.
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion removed system files.
- Malware was removed.
- Windows was restored, cloned, or moved to another drive.
- An upgrade or rollback did not complete.
- The storage drive developed file-system or hardware problems.
These clues help distinguish a Windows servicing problem from a security incident or broader disk failure.
Fix 3: Repair Windows Update or perform an in-place repair
If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, Windows’ servicing store may be damaged.
On supported Windows 11 installations, try the built-in repair reinstall:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, personal files, and settings. The option may not appear on every Windows installation.

Microsoft’s installation-media repair guidance explains the process.
Do not use a DLL copied from another computer or another Windows release. Even when the filename matches, the build, architecture, servicing state, and dependencies may not.
Fix 4: Use System Restore or Windows recovery
If the problem began recently, System Restore may reverse a damaged update, driver, or system change without removing personal documents.

- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and complete the restore.
- Restart and test Windows.
If no restore point is available, open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10. Available options can include startup repair, uninstalling a recent update, resetting Windows, or reinstalling from installation media. Microsoft describes these choices in its Windows recovery options.

A missing-file message and a KDS configuration failure are different problems.
If this is a domain controller or domain member and the real symptoms include any of the following, investigate the domain environment:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
KdsSvcwill not start.- A gMSA cannot authenticate.
- A gMSA password or key cannot be retrieved.
- A KDS root key is unavailable.
- Active Directory replication or Kerberos operations are failing.
Check the service:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
services.msc. - Locate Microsoft Key Distribution Service.
- Review its status and recent error details.
Do not force a service configuration change on a production domain controller without checking the domain’s design and replication health. Microsoft documents KDS and gMSA troubleshooting, including this trigger workaround when it is appropriate:
sc triggerinfo kdssvc start/networkon
A domain administrator should also check Active Directory health, replication, gMSA permissions, and event logs. Repairing kdscli.dll alone will not correct an unavailable KDS root key or a broken domain relationship.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 registers certain DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 KdsCli.dll
There is no verified reason to treat KdsCli.dll as a COM self-registering DLL. Registration will not restore a missing component, repair the Windows component store, or fix a missing dependency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not download or copy kdscli.dll
Avoid DLL download sites and unofficial repositories. A replacement may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real missing item is a dependency. Manual copying can also conflict with Windows component servicing and protected system-file mechanisms.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, a matching repair source, or an in-place repair instead. If one application alone reports the error while Windows passes its repairs, use that application’s official repair or verify-files feature. Research does not establish that a mainstream game or desktop application normally bundles this file.
Are drivers, Windows Features, or runtimes relevant?
Usually not. kdscli.dll is a Windows KDS component, so reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or enabling a random Windows Feature is not an evidence-based repair.
Likewise, do not use Device Manager unless your investigation identifies a separate hardware or driver fault. Updating a graphics, chipset, storage, or network driver will not normally restore this Windows component.

If the error remains
Collect these details before escalating:
- The complete error text.
- The executable or service that displays it.
- The full path returned by
where. - The result of the Microsoft signature check.
- Your Windows edition and build.
- Whether the computer is domain-joined or a domain controller.
- Whether the issue followed an update, restore, clone, cleanup, antivirus event, or malware removal.
- DISM and SFC results.
- Related entries in Event Viewer.
Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start, then inspect Windows Logs > System and Applications and Services Logs for KDS, servicing, Windows Update, or application-loader errors. This evidence will show whether the remaining fault is a missing Windows file, an incompatible dependency, a servicing failure, or a KDS and Active Directory problem.
FAQ
Is kdscli.dll malware?
No. KdsCli.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. A copy in an unusual directory or without a valid Microsoft signature should still be investigated.
Does kdscli.dll belong to a game?
Normally, no. It is associated with Windows Key Distribution Service functionality, not a game-specific runtime.
Is there an official standalone Microsoft download?
No legitimate standalone KdsCli.dll redistributable or installer is identified. Restore it through Windows servicing or repair Windows.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not as a fix for this component. Those packages do not normally restore KdsCli.dll.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency or may reject an incompatible or damaged file. Check the Windows repair results and the application or service that produced the message.
Will reinstalling the application fix it?
Only if that application has its own separate dependency problem. For a genuine missing Windows copy, repair Windows rather than expecting an application reinstall to replace a protected system component.
