Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a compact, visually distinctive action-adventure whose exploration, combat, and appealing Rot companions have earned broad praise. Its main caveats are a familiar genre framework and a story whose emotional impact depends on the player—and, in one 2026 review, did not fully land. Reception also varies by platform and by whether the evidence comes from critics or player ratings.
What kind of game is Kena: Bridge of Spirits?
You play Kena, a Spirit Guide investigating an abandoned village and helping trapped spirits move on. The small Rot companions support combat, exploration, and environmental interactions. Ember Lab presents the game as a story-driven action-adventure, not a role-playing game built around character levels and equipment.

There are skill points and upgrades, but Ember Lab says the game has no leveling system or gear and no massive skill tree. That makes it more useful to approach Kena as a focused action-adventure than as a deep character-building RPG.
What do reviews praise—and criticize?
Visual presentation and adventure design
Launch-era PS5 critic reviews surfaced on Metacritic praise the visuals, world, combat, level design, puzzles, and adventure structure. Together, those strengths help explain the game’s reputation as a polished, approachable adventure. The available review excerpts do not support treating any single aggregate critic score as the definitive verdict.

Familiar mechanics and story impact
The main reservation is that Kena uses recognizable action-adventure conventions rather than radically new mechanics. Whether that feels satisfying or too familiar depends partly on what a player wants from the genre. The story’s emotional connection also varies: Creative Bloq’s March 26, 2026 review of the Switch 2 port praised the presentation and soundtrack but said the emotional intent did not fully land.
That review scored the Switch 2 edition 7/10 and described combat as challenging even on the default difficulty. It is one outlet’s assessment of a later port, not a substitute for the 2021 PS4 and PS5 launch reviews.

What do player ratings say?
Storefront ratings are a separate kind of evidence from professional reviews. They reflect player responses on different platforms and use different systems, so the figures below should not be compared as if they were one shared critic score.
| Source and platform | Rating snapshot | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store, US listing | 4.49/5 from 25,261 global player ratings, observed October 8, 2026 | Mutable storefront user-rating average; PlayStation says reviews come from verified owners and are moderated. |
| Steam, English user reviews | 92% positive from 7,003 reviews, observed October 8, 2026 | Mutable user-review snapshot. |
| Steam, recent English user reviews | 85% positive from 83 reviews in the previous 30 days, observed October 8, 2026 | A smaller, more volatile recent sample. |
These snapshots indicate a positive player response on both storefronts, but do not settle how any particular player will feel about the story, challenge, or familiar design. Counts and percentages can change.

Is Kena: Bridge of Spirits open world?
No—not technically. In its FAQ dated October 5, 2021, Ember Lab described it as “a crafted, story-driven experience that features some areas of exploration and choice.” Expect connected opportunities to explore within a directed adventure, rather than an expansive open world.

Which versions do the reviews cover?
Kena: Bridge of Spirits launched for PS4 and PS5 on September 21, 2021. It later came to other platforms, including a Switch 2 edition reviewed by Creative Bloq in March 2026. That later review concerns the Switch 2 port; it should not be read as a technical comparison with the original releases. The available evidence does not establish controlled performance comparisons across platforms.
When comparing reviews, check the platform and edition, the review date, and whether the rating comes from a critic or a storefront audience. Those distinctions matter more than placing every score on one scale.
