Kenshi is a single-player, open-world squad RPG for players who want to make their own goals—and are willing to learn through a harsh start, a dated interface, and technical rough edges. Critics generally praised its depth and freedom, but their favorable verdict came with clear reservations about presentation, performance, and bugs. It is a stronger fit for patient sandbox fans than for anyone seeking a guided story or polished introduction.
What critics say about Kenshi
Metacritic’s PC critic page displays a 75 Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” from seven positive, two mixed, and no negative reviews in its displayed set. That is a snapshot of a small group of critic reviews, not a guarantee that the game will suit every player. Metacritic’s PC critic reviews
The praise centers on a rare combination of scale, freedom, and depth. PC Gamer’s January 8, 2019 review, rated 84/100, summed up the trade-off: “Work through the presentational ugliness and technical awkwardness, and you’ll find an experience of frightening depth.” That is a critic’s assessment, and its caveat is part of the verdict, not a footnote.
Other reviews reinforce both sides. Multiplayer.it called Kenshi “the Dark Souls of the hardcore RPG segment” in its December 6, 2018 excerpt. Meristation, on December 31, 2018, praised the possibilities but warned that dated graphics and poor optimization could put players off. Games.cz highlighted the game’s scale and style while noting performance problems and bugs on February 25, 2019. GRYOnline.pl’s December 17, 2018 excerpt similarly praised its freedom while describing it as demanding and bugged. These are individual outlet judgments, not evidence that every player will encounter the same issues.

What kind of game is Kenshi?
Kenshi is a free-roaming sandbox, not a campaign built around a prescribed hero’s journey. Lo-Fi Games’ official Steam description invites players to take on roles such as trader, thief, rebel, adventurer, farmer, or warlord, while training a squad, building a base, and trying to survive. It explicitly rejects the chosen-one fantasy: the player begins without special status and must earn strength. Official Steam listing
That structure explains why critics describe the game as unusually deep. Rather than relying on a tightly scripted plot, it gives players room to pursue their own aims and lets the world’s systems and events produce stories along the way. The developer describes the world as spanning more than 870 square kilometers; that is Lo-Fi Games’ stated figure, not an independently measured map-size result.

Why players value its freedom—and why the start can be hard
Freedom is the main attraction
You decide what your squad is trying to do and how to approach it. That open-endedness can support very different play styles, from trade and farming to exploration, combat, or base-building. Players who enjoy setting their own objectives are more likely to appreciate the game than those who need frequent narrative direction or a clear sequence of missions.
Progress takes patience
The same lack of a protected, central-hero role makes the opening experience demanding. You should expect to learn how the game works while dealing with vulnerability and setbacks, rather than being guided through a smooth sequence of introductory victories. The patience required is part of the appeal for some sandbox fans, but it is a meaningful barrier for players who want quick access to a compelling story or a forgiving tutorial.

Squad management and building are part of the proposition
The official description includes training a squad and building a base among its core activities. If managing a group and developing a home or operation sounds satisfying, those systems help make the open world feel purposeful. If you mainly want a tightly focused, solo-protagonist RPG, the game’s broader management-and-survival emphasis may not match what you are looking for.
Presentation and technical trade-offs
Critics’ reservations are not limited to taste. Review excerpts flag dated graphics and presentation, technical awkwardness, poor optimization or performance, and bugs. The available critic page does not establish current performance on every PC configuration, nor does it provide contemporary benchmarks, so the reviews should be read as warnings about the game’s rough edges rather than a prediction of a specific frame rate or issue on your machine.

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
In practical terms, Kenshi asks you to tolerate friction in exchange for its systems-driven freedom. If modern presentation, a clean interface, technical polish, or a carefully paced onboarding experience is a priority, the drawbacks may outweigh the sandbox’s depth. If you can overlook those issues, the unusual scope is what critics most often found worthwhile.

Should you buy Kenshi?
Kenshi is worth considering if your ideal RPG gives you room to choose your own goals, build up a squad, and create stories through play—and you are comfortable with a difficult opening and technical or presentation compromises. The favorable critical consensus reflects that distinctive depth, but it does not erase the drawbacks reviewers repeatedly identified.
- Good fit: You enjoy open-ended sandboxes, emergent stories, squad development, and setting your own long-term objectives.
- Think twice: You prefer guided narratives, a gentle learning curve, polished presentation, or consistently smooth technical performance.
The critical score and player reviews point in a positive direction, but the decisive question is whether freedom and depth matter more to you than ease of entry and polish.
