Instead of using a fixed song chart like Guitar Hero, it detects notes from an incoming audio signal and displays prompts for players to match. It is an educational prototype—not a commercial Guitar Hero replacement or a general-purpose piano-learning system.
How Keyboard Hero works
The project takes piano audio from a computer through an audio jack. One Raspberry Pi Pico (RP2040) processes the signal and identifies a note’s fundamental frequency; it then maps that note to one of five categories. A second Pico handles button input, game state and VGA graphics. Audio also goes to a speaker, with a delay intended to keep playback in sync with the visual prompts and the player’s input. The project authors describe the game as one where players match on-screen notes to a five-button “keyboard” in time with a user-selected piano song.
That audio-driven approach is the project’s key distinction: prompts are derived from the signal rather than read from a pre-authored chart. The authors limit the intended input to simple, single-instrument piano audio. That constraint makes frequency analysis more manageable; the project is not documented as reliably charting arbitrary songs, mixed recordings or multiple instruments.
Keyboard Hero vs. Guitar Hero
| Feature | Keyboard Hero | Guitar Hero |
|---|---|---|
| Where prompts come from | Note categories detected from incoming piano audio. | Preset song note sequences. |
| Music supported | Simple, single-instrument piano audio. | Commercial-game song charts. |
| Controller | Five physical buttons on a small wooden base. | Guitar-shaped game peripheral. |
| Project scope | Cornell ECE 4760 student engineering prototype. | Commercial rhythm-game series. |
Both share the basic rhythm-game challenge of matching colored prompts as they reach receptors in time with music. But Keyboard Hero is a bare-bones rendition inspired by that format, not an equivalent game: the documented project does not establish Guitar Hero compatibility, comparable song content or commercial-level polish.

Hardware and reported technical details
The Cornell project documentation describes a 640 × 480 VGA display, two Raspberry Pi Pico boards, a five-button controller, a computer audio source and a speaker. Its implementation includes audio conditioning, ADC sampling, frequency detection, UART communication between the boards and DAC speaker output. The following figures are settings or results reported by the project authors in 2025, not independent benchmarks:
- Audio sampling: 20 kHz.
- Display: 640 × 480 VGA.
- Graphics rendering: 30 frames per second.
- Board-to-board UART: 115200 baud.
The authors say RAM limitations led them to split audio processing from graphics and gameplay across two Pico boards. Their frequency analysis is designed for notes in and near the middle-C region, and its practicality depends on keeping the audio input simple.

Could you build one?
The documented design offers a starting point for an educational hardware project, but it is not a verified turnkey parts list. The core hardware includes two Raspberry Pi Pico boards, a VGA display, five buttons, an audio cable, a speaker and supporting electronics. The project does not endorse particular component models or establish that every recreation must use the exact prototype parts.
For a build, the most important compatibility questions are whether the display setup can produce the documented VGA output, whether the audio input and conditioning suit the source signal, and whether the chosen button and speaker circuitry can connect to the controller boards as intended. The project documentation should be consulted for its circuit and implementation details before selecting components.

What the project is—and is not
Keyboard Hero is an interesting demonstration of audio processing and embedded game design: it attempts to turn detected piano notes into playable prompts using inexpensive microcontroller boards. Its narrow input assumptions are central to how it works, not a minor footnote. The available project description does not establish broad song compatibility, piano-teaching effectiveness or a commercial release.
