“kern62.dll not found,” “The file kern62.dll is missing,” and “This application failed to start because kern62.dll was not found” are Windows loader errors. You may also see “Error loading kern62.dll,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “The file kern62.dll is missing or corrupted.”
The safest fix is to identify the CAD, engineering, manufacturing, or 3D application that is launching the error, then repair or reinstall that complete application from its original publisher. Do not download kern62.dll into System32 or SysWOW64.

What kern62.dll is
kern62.dll is associated with the ACIS Geometric Modeler Kernel. ACIS is a commercial 3D geometric-modeling technology embedded in third-party CAD and engineering software. It is not a normal Windows component.
The file is historically associated with Spatial Technology and Spatial Corporation, now part of Dassault Systèmes. The application that installed the ACIS libraries owns the copy used by Windows.

Public file catalogs report a legacy kern62.dll build as version 6.2.3048.0, approximately 4.05 MB, and 32-bit. Treat those details as catalog metadata, not as proof that every copy has that version or architecture. No single end-user application has been publicly established as the universal owner of this file.
ACIS installations can also use companion modules with names such as:
base62.dlllaw62.dllspline62.dllbool62.dll
That is why replacing only kern62.dll often leaves the application unable to start.
Find the application that needs kern62.dll
Before changing files, identify the executable that is requesting the DLL.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the executable path and application name.
- Select Cancel when finished.
If the target points to an old CAD or engineering installation, repair that product rather than Windows.
Check Task Manager

- Read the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
Event Viewer may identify the parent executable, but it may not prove that kern62.dll itself is the only missing component.
Search the Start menu and installed apps
Search for recently used CAD, drafting, simulation, manufacturing, visualization, or engineering programs. Then open:
Settings > Apps > Installed apps
Sort by installation date if the problem began after an update or incomplete installation. Also check the application’s own launcher for a repair, verify, or update function.

This is the most likely solution.
- Close the failing application and its launcher.
- Save any open work in other programs.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the CAD or engineering application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair or Reset, depending on what the publisher provides.
- Try Repair first.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
Some desktop programs do not provide repair controls in Settings. In that case:
- Open the application’s original installer or launcher.
- Look for Repair, Modify, Verify, or Reinstall.
- Choose the repair option.
- Allow the installer to restore the complete application and its ACIS modules.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the application and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer, licensed media, or official account portal. Use the same product edition and compatible release where possible.

Do not remove individual DLLs from the application directory before reinstalling. The installer needs to determine which ACIS modules, runtimes, configuration files, and registry entries belong together.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the application starts without the kern62.dll message and reaches its normal workspace. Open a sample project if available and perform a basic operation that loads the modeling engine.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed an application file. Restore it only when you can confirm that it came from the trusted application installer.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand any entry associated with the CAD application or its installation folder.
- Check the detected path and action.
- If the file clearly belongs to a trusted, signed installation, follow Windows Security’s restore or allow instructions.
- Run the application’s repair function afterward.
Do not restore a file solely because its name is kern62.dll. Verify its location, originating installer, digital signature where available, and security result. If the file was downloaded from an unknown source, remove it and reinstall the parent application instead.
Avoid permanent antivirus exclusions. If an exclusion is genuinely required by the application vendor, use the narrowest folder or file scope and review it after the application is repaired.

Fix 3: Confirm the architecture and complete ACIS set
A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications. It does not follow that a 64-bit replacement for kern62.dll is appropriate.
If the affected application is 32-bit, it needs compatible 32-bit libraries. Do not mix an old kern62.dll with files from another ACIS release, and do not combine files taken from different applications.
To inspect the application:
- Right-click its executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the available product information.
- Check the publisher’s documentation or support portal for supported Windows architectures.
- Use the publisher’s installer to restore the matching library set.
If kern62.dll exists in the application folder but Windows reports “The specified module could not be found,” another dependency may be missing. Reinstall the complete product and its documented prerequisites. A dependency inspection tool can help a technician diagnose the folder, but it does not make downloading arbitrary dependency DLLs safe.
Fix 4: Check whether a Microsoft runtime is required
Some older applications require a particular Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. The required package and architecture depend on the parent application.
A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 runtime, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not assume that installing the newest package replaces every older runtime requirement, and do not assume that Visual C++ contains kern62.dll.
Use the application publisher’s instructions first. Microsoft’s current Visual C++ Redistributable documentation explains the available x86 and x64 packages and how to choose between them.

- Choose the architecture specified by the application.
- Install it.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
Installing DirectX, .NET, or every Visual C++ package is not a definitive repair for kern62.dll. Add those components only when the application’s installer or error message identifies them as prerequisites.
Fix 5: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Some older programs depend on optional Windows components. Enable a feature only when the product documentation or installer requests it.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows Features.
- Select only the feature named by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application.
Do not enable unrelated features as a general DLL fix. Windows Features do not provide the third-party ACIS kernel.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
A graphics or device driver usually does not provide kern62.dll, but an old engineering application may fail for several reasons after a system or hardware change. Check the application’s own requirements before changing drivers.
To inspect a device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when a compatible update is available from the device or computer manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally do not reconstruct a third-party ACIS installation, so use them after repairing the owning application or when several unrelated Windows programs are failing.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
The order matters. Complete DISM before SFC.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application after restarting. If both commands complete without resolving the error, the missing component is probably inside the application installation rather than Windows.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or OLE components.
There is no public evidence that kern62.dll is a COM server or needs registry registration. Do not run:
regsvr32 kern62.dll
If you already tried it and received “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found,” that usually means registration is irrelevant. It does not prove that the file is missing or corrupted.

Why downloading kern62.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- A modified or malicious file
- The wrong ACIS release
- The wrong architecture
- A file missing its companion libraries
- A copy that does not match the application’s installer
Copying a file to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also create DLL search-order conflicts. It does not install the complete ACIS runtime.

The safe sources are the CAD or engineering publisher’s official installer, official launcher, licensed installation media, or the same verified installer used by your organization. If you have a backup, restore the complete application installation rather than one DLL. A DLL placed beside the application executable should come only from that verified product installer.
If reinstalling still fails
Record these details before contacting the application publisher:

- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit

If the file exists but the loader still reports that a module cannot be found, ask the publisher which dependency is missing and which runtime architecture it supports. Do not substitute files from another ACIS release.
For an old application, the publisher may specify a legacy prerequisite or compatibility setting. Follow that product-specific guidance rather than enabling random Windows features.
If several unrelated applications suddenly report missing files, run a security scan and inspect the drive for errors before replacing application files. A broad failure pattern can indicate disk trouble, malware, or wider system corruption.
