Its launch-era reviews praised the combat and playing with friends, but found the matches repetitive and the progression and content less compelling over time. Those reviews cover the July 2025 launch build, not the game after later updates.
What is Killing Floor 3?
Killing Floor 3 is a first-person action-horror shooter set in 2091. Steam’s description casts players as members of Nightfall, a rebel group fighting bioengineered monsters called zeds, created by the megacorporation Horzine. Its basic loop is to fight successive enemy waves, earn dosh, improve a loadout and keep going. Steam’s product page describes it as a co-op action/horror FPS.

Combat is the main attraction: the game’s arsenal includes weapons such as shotguns, flamethrowers and katanas, alongside weapon mods, gadgets and skills. The M.E.A.T. system emphasizes dismemberment and lingering blood. Steam’s mature-content notice warns of frequent dismemberment, decapitations, exploding body parts and realistic blood effects, so this is a poor fit if that material is a deal-breaker.
How does it play solo or with friends?
You can play solo or join a squad of up to six. Steam lists single-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. PlayStation likewise advertises solo play and up to six co-op players. Its page describes six Specialists with distinct skills and proficiencies, plus weapons and gadgets; it also lists 30 perk levels and more than 30 skill choices for each Specialist. Those are official product descriptions, rather than independent assessments of how different the roles feel in practice.

What did launch reviews say?
Launch reviews found the shooting and co-op enjoyable, while questioning how well the game sustains interest beyond its core loop. PC Gamer’s Elie Gould called it “fun, quick to pick up,” but said it did not do much to stand out from other gory multiplayer shooters. Gould described five-wave matches that end in a boss fight, satisfying sessions with friends and enjoyable weapon modification, but also said waves could become predictable.
Repetition and content
Gould’s July 24, 2025 review found the optional story missions amounted to about four hours of content. The review also judged that progression could lull after roughly the first ten hours. Those time estimates and criticisms reflect one reviewer’s experience with the launch build; they are not guarantees about every player’s playtime or an assessment of the current version. IGN’s launch review summary also praised the co-op shooting and distinct classes, while criticizing the amount of launch content and the weapon-progression system. Watch IGN’s review. Taken together, the reviews point to a game whose moment-to-moment action was more persuasive than its long-term variety and progression at launch.
Who is Killing Floor 3 for?
- A good match: You want a straightforward wave shooter, especially one to play with friends, and enjoy weapon-focused combat and grotesque enemy effects.
- Think twice: You need a large amount of varied mission content, a progression system that stays rewarding for a long time, or a shooter that feels markedly different from its peers. Launch reviews raised concerns on those points.
- Check first: You plan to play online on PS5, or you are sensitive to graphic violence. PlayStation lists PS Plus as required for online play and gives the content advisories below.
