It is not a normal Windows system DLL, and it is not supplied by the Visual C++ Redistributable itself. The file may be installed by the Kinect runtime, included with the Kinect SDK, or bundled privately beside a game or plugin executable. Its exact location therefore depends on the installer and application.
A commonly reported file record identifies a 32-bit kinect20.dll as version 2.0.1410.18000 with a size of about 0.58 MB. That observation should not be treated as a universal Microsoft file inventory. Installing a file with the same name and version does not guarantee compatibility with the program that failed.

The Kinect v2 sensor does not necessarily need to be connected for this error to appear. An application can try to load its Kinect library during startup before it checks whether a sensor is available.
Diagnose the error before changing Windows
First identify the exact program that displays the message. Check the title bar, desktop shortcut, game launcher, plugin host, or crash dialog. The application determines whether you need only the runtime, the full SDK, or the application’s own bundled files.
Use this symptom guide:

Also consider what changed. The failure may have followed an uninstall, Windows update, game reinstall, plugin change, antivirus quarantine, deleted application files, backup restoration, or installation of an incompatible dependency. These are diagnostic clues, not proof of one universal cause.

1. Repair or verify the affected application
For a game, plugin, or commercial application, this is the most important first step. The correct Kinect library may be private to that program and may need to sit beside its executable rather than in a Windows system folder.
Steam or a similar launcher
- Close the game.
- Open the launcher.
- Open the game library.
- Right-click the affected game and open Properties.
- Find Installed Files, Local Files, or the equivalent section.
- Select Verify integrity, Verify files, or Repair.
- Wait for the scan to complete.
- Start the game again.
For software installed by another launcher, use its Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair command. If no repair option exists, uninstall the application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original developer or publisher installer.
If the application has an optional Kinect, face-tracking, motion-control, or sensor plugin, check its settings and documentation. Some programs attempt to load Kinect support even when the feature is unused or the sensor is disconnected. Disabling that optional component may stop the error, but reinstalling the application remains the proper fix when its files are damaged.
How to tell it worked: the application starts without the DLL message. If it launches but later reports that no sensor is found, the missing-library problem is resolved and the remaining issue is device or driver detection.

2. Install the official Kinect for Windows Runtime
The runtime is intended for end users who need to run a Kinect application. It provides the drivers and runtime environment required by Kinect applications without necessarily installing the complete development toolset.
Microsoft’s current package is the Kinect for Windows Runtime 2.2.1811. Its download is KinectRuntime-v2.2_1811.zip, listed as version 2.2.1811.10000.
Follow Microsoft’s installation method carefully:
- Close all Kinect applications.
- Download the runtime ZIP from Microsoft.
- Right-click the ZIP file, select Properties, and choose Unblock if that checkbox appears.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Locate
kinectsensor.inf. - Right-click
kinectsensor.infand select Install. - Approve the installation prompt.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
Microsoft lists .NET Framework 4.5 as a prerequisite for this runtime. Do not run KinectRuntime-x64.msi directly when following Microsoft’s current instructions. The kinectsensor.inf installation is the specified method.
How to tell it worked: the runtime installs without an error, the application gets past its initial startup failure, or Windows begins detecting Kinect components in Device Manager. If the program still reports the same missing file, continue with application repair and architecture checks instead of copying a DLL manually.
3. Install the SDK only when the software requires it
The SDK is for development tools, samples, APIs, device interfaces, and applications that specifically require SDK components. It is not automatically the correct replacement for every end-user runtime failure.
Microsoft lists the Kinect for Windows SDK 2.0 as package KinectSDK-v2.0_1409-Setup.exe, version 2.0.1410.19000. The listed components include Kinect v2 drivers, APIs, device interfaces, and code samples.

Use the SDK when:
- You are running a Kinect development sample.
- A plugin or application explicitly requires Kinect for Windows SDK 2.0.
- The software documentation names the SDK rather than the runtime.
- You are developing or debugging a native Kinect v2 application.
To install it:
- Disconnect the Kinect sensor.
- Download the SDK installer from Microsoft.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Accept the setup prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Reconnect the sensor only after installation finishes.
- Open Device Manager and check for the Kinect device.
- Start the application or sample again.
The SDK page lists older x64 Windows versions, while the current runtime page targets Windows 10. Windows 11 may run particular Kinect applications successfully, but Microsoft’s listed support information does not establish compatibility with every Windows 11 configuration or application.

4. Check whether the program and DLL architecture match
Kinect v2 native applications must use a compatible architecture. A 32-bit application generally cannot load a 64-bit Kinect DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit replacement. Windows being 64-bit does not mean every game or plugin installed on it is 64-bit.
Check the application’s documentation, launcher settings, or executable properties. You can also:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click its main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open Details and Compatibility where available.
- Check whether the vendor identifies the build as x86 or x64.
For a more definitive check, use a dependency inspection tool supplied or recommended by the application vendor. Do not download a random 64-bit kinect20.dll simply because your copy of Windows is 64-bit.
If the error is 0xc000007b, “not designed to run on Windows,” or a procedure-entry-point message, architecture or version mismatch is especially likely. Install the matching build of the application and its supported Kinect package.
5. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a native library after an application update or reinstall.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
kinect20.dll. - Review the detection and file path.
- Restore the file only if the application came from a trusted, authenticated source and the detection is demonstrably incorrect.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward so the file is restored from its proper package.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection merely to copy a DLL into an application folder. If the file returns to quarantine, contact the application vendor and verify the installer rather than forcing the program to run.

6. Reinstall or update related device drivers
If the application now starts but the Kinect sensor is not detected, treat that as a separate driver problem.
- Disconnect the Kinect sensor.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories containing Kinect, imaging, USB, or unknown devices.
- Right-click the affected device and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the official Kinect Runtime or SDK again.
- Reconnect the powered Kinect v2 sensor to a suitable USB 3.0 port.
- Return to Device Manager and confirm that the device appears without a warning icon.

7. Repair Windows components only when broader corruption is suspected
kinect20.dll is not normally a protected Windows component, so SFC and DISM are not the primary repair for this error. Use them when Windows Update failures, damaged system files, or multiple unrelated applications are also failing.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Run the following command separately:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is guaranteed to restore a third-party Kinect library.

Do not use regsvr32 kinect20.dll as a routine fix. regsvr32 is for registering self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries, while kinect20.dll is generally used as a native runtime dependency.
If you run:
regsvr32 kinect20.dll
you may receive an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not prove Windows is broken. It means the library is not exposing the registration entry point that regsvr32 expects.
Similarly, do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. This can create version conflicts and architecture confusion, and it does not repair the application’s dependency chain.

Avoid isolated DLL downloads
Random DLL download sites sites are an unsafe and unreliable source. A downloaded file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be an incompatible build, or be missing other libraries the application needs. The correct file may also need to remain beside the application executable instead of being placed in a global Windows folder.

Use Microsoft’s official Runtime or SDK package, or the original developer’s authenticated installer and launcher repair function. If a vendor distributes Kinect components with its game or plugin, use that vendor package rather than mixing files from unrelated installations.
If the error remains
Work through these checks:
- Confirm the exact application producing the message.
- Repair or reinstall that application from its original source.
- Determine whether it needs the runtime or the full SDK.
- Confirm whether the application is x86 or x64.
- Check whether antivirus removed a file.
- Look for a second error naming another missing dependency.
- Check whether the application officially supports your Windows version.
- If using Windows N, install the required Media Feature Pack only when the application’s documentation or error identifies missing media components.
- Use System Restore only if the program worked previously and a restore point clearly predates the failure.
- Contact the application vendor if its dependency chain remains broken after a clean reinstall.
A program that starts but cannot see the sensor has moved beyond the kinect20.dll problem. Check Device Manager, the USB 3.0 connection, sensor power, and the application’s Kinect settings separately.
FAQ
Is kinect20.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. It belongs to Microsoft Kinect software and applications that use Kinect v2. It is not normally a Windows-protected operating-system component.
Do I need a Kinect sensor to fix the error?
Not always. Some applications load the library during startup even when the sensor is disconnected or unused. You still need the application’s required runtime or bundled files.
Should I install the Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the application separately requires it. There is no evidence that the Visual C++ Redistributable is the source package for kinect20.dll.
Should I install the SDK or Runtime?
Install the Runtime for an end-user Kinect application. Install the SDK when the program requires development components, samples, APIs, or SDK-specific tools.
Why does installing the runtime not fix the game?
The game may require a privately bundled Kinect build, may be x86 while you installed an incompatible dependency, or may have corrupted files. Verify or reinstall the game before adding files manually.
Can I register kinect20.dll with regsvr32?
Generally no. It is a native runtime library, not normally a self-registering COM server. Repair the application or install the correct Kinect package instead.
