The studio’s public response defended the game’s creative intent and player choice, but did not directly explain the scenes at the center of the criticism. Later comments from Warhorse representatives offered context about the game’s cast and their view of the controversy’s impact; no cited source measures the size of the backlash or its effect on sales.
What prompted the controversy?
On January 18, 2025, ComicBook.com reported growing questions about LGBTQ+ scenes in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Its coverage also said the game was unavailable in Saudi Arabia because of “unskippable gay scenes.” That explanation was reported, but the article did not independently confirm why the game was unavailable there. The same story described criticism surrounding LGBTQ+ content and debate about forum bans and a code of conduct. ComicBook.com’s January 18 report

Those separate threads are important: the public dispute included reactions to in-game representation and to how discussion was moderated, while the Saudi availability explanation remained unverified in the coverage cited here. Online criticism does not establish what most players thought.
How did Daniel Vávra respond?
Warhorse co-founder and creative director Daniel Vávra defended the game’s creative independence and historical-storytelling aims. In a statement reproduced by ComicBook.com, he said: “The game is exactly what I wanted it to be. No one has tried to influence me as an artist in any way, and anyone who knows me knows I wouldn’t let them anyway.”

He added that the goal was “to show life in medieval Bohemia as it easily could have happened and to tell an interesting story,” and described the game as a role-playing game in which players make choices and face consequences. These remarks explain Vávra’s stated intent and view of player agency; they are not independent historical findings. His response, as reported, did not identify or directly explain the LGBTQ+ scenes that prompted the questions.
What did Warhorse say about the game’s cast?
In a 2025 PC Gamer interview, Warhorse representatives pushed back against attempts to frame the studio through culture-war labels. Global PR manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling said: “It seems like someone is always trying to brand us somehow, and we are just trying to make a cool videogame.” Senior game designer Ondřej Bittner said: “We think the extreme voices are just never happy.” PC Gamer’s interview with Warhorse
The interview also attributed the sequel’s broader cast to its setting and historical research, including its move into Kuttenberg. That is the studio’s explanation for the cast, not evidence that all players shared the same response to its representation.
Did the controversy affect sales or reception?
On January 9, 2026, executive producer Martin Klíma said it was difficult to know whether the disputes affected sales or reception. He gave his personal view that they probably mattered little to the wider gaming public and that any effect on developer morale was small. PC Gamer reported him characterizing the kerfuffle as something that “only mattered to, really, a handful of terminally online culture warriors.” PC Gamer’s January 2026 report
