The standard mode is the sensible starting point for most players because it teaches the game’s demanding combat and survival systems without Hardcore’s extra navigation and saving restrictions. Hardcore is an optional replay-style challenge built around reduced interface help, no fast travel, no autosaves and mandatory negative perks. Warhorse estimated about 30 hours for the main plot and secondary quests in a 2014 development FAQ, but that figure excluded activities, wandering and events and is not a current average or completion guarantee.
What kind of game is Kingdom Come: Deliverance?
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a story-driven, single-player open-world role-playing game. Its setting is medieval Bohemia, and the central character is Henry. “Open world” describes the structure: the story takes place across an explorable landscape rather than in a sequence of isolated levels, so you can spend time moving through the world and engaging with activities beyond the central plot.

That does not mean every activity has to be completed, that every quest can be tackled in any order, or that the game offers unrestricted progression from its opening minutes. The documented sources establish an explorable world and a main story with secondary quests; they do not establish a universal quest order or a rule that all side content is permanently optional. Treat the world as a place to explore around the story, while following the requirements of whichever quest you have accepted.

The game’s identity is deliberately grounded rather than arcade-like. Combat, travel, equipment care and survival systems are meant to support a realistic, story-rich role-playing experience. Those systems are why the difficulty question cannot be answered usefully with a single “easy” or “hard” label.

Is Kingdom Come: Deliverance hard?
It can be demanding, especially while you are learning its combat and day-to-day systems, but the official listing does not assign a numeric difficulty rating. The better distinction is between the standard mode and the optional Hardcore rules. Standard mode provides more interface and saving assistance. Hardcore removes several conveniences and changes survival and combat, making the overall experience less forgiving for players who choose it.
Hardcore should not be described as a proven, identical increase in difficulty for every player or platform. Warhorse’s patch documentation records the rules that change; it does not provide a current, platform-by-platform balance audit or show that every player will find each combat encounter uniformly harder. The practical effect is that you receive less information and fewer recovery options, so mistakes generally carry more planning cost.
Standard mode and Hardcore mode compared
| System | Standard mode | Hardcore mode | What the difference means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navigation assistance | More HUD and compass help is available. | The HUD is simplified; your map position and compass cardinal points are removed. You navigate with landmarks and the sun. | You must build a mental map and pay attention to terrain, roads and direction. |
| Fast travel | Available as a convenience where the game permits it. | Disabled. | Every long journey must be planned and travelled through the world. |
| Saving | Autosaves provide more routine recovery opportunities. | Autosaves are disabled. | Progress requires more deliberate save planning; an unexpected failure can cost more time. |
| Survival | The standard survival balance applies. | Survival is rebalanced and demands greater attention. | Rest, food and general preparedness matter more to a successful outing. |
| Combat | Standard combat adjustments apply. | Combat is adjusted under the Hardcore rules. | Fights must be approached with more caution; the documentation does not establish a universal numerical difficulty increase. |
| Character creation | No mandatory Hardcore negative-perk selection. | You select negative perks at character creation. | The mode imposes lasting disadvantages from the beginning of the run. |
These are feature differences documented in Warhorse’s patch notes for the original game. They should be read as a description of the rules, not as a claim that every release has exactly the same balance in every circumstance.
Which mode should you choose?
Choose standard mode for a first playthrough
Standard mode is the safest recommendation if you are new to the game, unfamiliar with its combat, or primarily interested in seeing the story and learning how the world works. The additional navigation and saving assistance reduce the number of systems you have to master at once. You can concentrate on understanding combat timing, travel, equipment and quests before adding Hardcore’s restrictions.

This is an inference from the documented settings, not an official developer prescription. The sources do not claim that standard mode is easy; it simply leaves more assistance available than Hardcore.
Choose Hardcore when the constraints are the point
Hardcore suits a player who specifically wants a less-assisted, more immersive run or is returning for a replay. Expect to navigate by landmarks and the sun, travel without fast travel, manage progress without autosaves, and live with the negative perks selected at creation. It is best chosen deliberately, because those rules affect the entire run rather than acting as a temporary difficulty toggle.
Do not choose by a number
No reliable source in the available material supplies a numeric difficulty score, comparative completion rate or current average failure count. A recommendation based on “7/10 difficulty” would create false precision. Decide instead whether you want convenience and learning support or stricter navigation, survival and saving rules.
How open-world progression works
The game combines a central narrative with a world that can be explored between story objectives. You may spend time travelling, investigating locations and taking on secondary quests or other activities instead of moving directly from one main objective to the next. The 2014 playtime estimate itself separated the main plot and secondary quests from activities, wandering and events, which indicates that those forms of play are distinct from the quoted quest runtime.

Exploration is part of the time commitment
Road travel and discovery take real time, particularly in Hardcore, where fast travel is disabled. Even in standard mode, a player who follows detours, investigates the landscape or pursues activities will spend longer in the world than someone who focuses narrowly on required quests.
Progression is not a promise of total freedom
Open-world classification does not prove that every mission is available immediately or that all content can be completed in any sequence. Quest requirements, story gates and the consequences of choices can still shape what you can do at a given point. Because the available official descriptions do not provide a complete progression chart, avoid treating the game as a completely non-linear sandbox.
Use the world deliberately
- In standard mode, use the available map and travel assistance to learn routes and recognize important landmarks.
- In Hardcore, note roads, rivers, settlements and other landmarks because your map position and cardinal compass points are removed.
- Leave time for activities and detours if you want the broader role-playing experience rather than only the critical path.
- Plan longer journeys around survival and equipment needs, especially under Hardcore rules.
How long does Kingdom Come: Deliverance take to beat?
The only specific runtime located in the supplied official-era material is a 2014 Warhorse estimate of about 30 hours for the main plot and secondary quests. It explicitly excluded activities, wandering and events. Because it was a pre-release development estimate, it is not a measured player average, a completionist total or a current guarantee for every edition.

| What you do | What the evidence supports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Main plot plus secondary quests | About 30 hours, estimated by Warhorse in 2014. | Use this as a historical scope-specific estimate, not a stopwatch promise. |
| Activities, wandering and events | Explicitly excluded from that estimate. | Adding them makes a run longer, but no authoritative total is supplied. |
| Completionist play | No current official figure or robust comparable dataset was found. | Do not present a completionist number as established fact. |
| Hardcore play | No separate official runtime estimate was supplied. | Disabled fast travel and autosaves can change how long your personal run takes, but the sources do not quantify the effect. |
Your actual time will depend on how much you explore and how often you engage with activities. That conclusion follows from the estimate’s explicit exclusions; it is not a measured population statistic. A player following only the main and secondary quest scope may be closer to the historical estimate, while a player who wanders, revisits locations, retries difficult situations or travels manually can take substantially longer.

What changes your personal playtime?
Exploration and detours
The world is designed to be travelled, and optional-looking diversions are exactly the content excluded from the 30-hour figure. Every detour adds travel and decision time, so two players can experience the same story while recording very different totals.
Mode selection
Hardcore removes fast travel and autosaves. Manual travel lengthens journeys, while the lack of automatic recovery can make a failed attempt more expensive in real time. The sources do not provide a multiplier, so any exact percentage increase would be speculation.
Activities and events
Activities and events were named separately from the main plot and secondary quests in the estimate. If they are part of your goal, budget additional time beyond the historical 30-hour scope rather than treating them as included.
Learning the systems
New players may spend time practising combat, learning routes and understanding survival or equipment routines. That learning period is part of a normal first run, but no measured average is available to convert it into a reliable number.

Practical planning checklist
Use this checklist before starting a long session:
- Pick the mode intentionally: standard for a supported first run; Hardcore for a deliberately restrictive replay.
- Set your time expectation correctly: treat “about 30 hours” as Warhorse’s 2014 estimate for main and secondary quests only.
- Reserve exploration time: activities, wandering and events were outside that estimate.
- Plan Hardcore travel: without fast travel, routes and landmarks become part of each journey.
- Plan Hardcore saves: with autosaves disabled, make progress-saving a deliberate part of your routine.
- Expect survival and equipment management: Hardcore’s rebalanced survival rules make preparation more consequential.
- Verify your edition and platform: store metadata and availability can change, and a listing for the sequel is not the original game.
Common questions answered directly
Is the game open world?
Yes. Official platform listings classify Kingdom Come: Deliverance as a single-player open-world RPG set in medieval Bohemia. Open-world means an explorable setting around the story; it does not establish unlimited quest order or universal access to every activity at all times.
Is Hardcore required?
No. Hardcore is an optional ruleset. The documented changes include reduced HUD information, landmark-and-sun navigation, disabled fast travel and autosaves, rebalanced survival, adjusted combat and mandatory negative perks.
Is 30 hours the exact completion time?
No. It is an approximately 30-hour Warhorse estimate from 2014 for the main plot and secondary quests, excluding activities, wandering and events. It is not a current average or a complete-playthrough guarantee.
Is standard mode easy?
The available official material does not assign a numeric rating, and “easy” would oversimplify the game’s learning curve. Standard mode retains more assistance than Hardcore; whether that feels easy depends on your familiarity with its systems.
Bottom line
Start with standard mode if this is your first journey through Bohemia or if the story matters more to you than strict simulation. Select Hardcore when you want navigation by landmarks and the sun, manual travel, deliberate saving and mandatory disadvantages to define the run. For time planning, use Warhorse’s 2014 “about 30 hours” figure only for the main plot and secondary quests, then add an unquantified allowance for activities, wandering, events and the slower, more demanding routines of Hardcore.
