None of those features turns the PS5 into a Windows gaming PC or lets it launch arbitrary Steam or other Windows games.
What “running a Windows game” actually means
The answer depends on whether the Windows executable is running on the PS5 or merely being displayed somewhere else. Those are different arrangements with different requirements and limitations.

Native execution
Native execution means installing the Windows build on the machine that runs it, then using that machine’s processor, graphics hardware, operating system and storage. Sony’s current PlayStation documentation does not identify a supported method for installing or executing a Windows game build on a PS5. A PS5 therefore cannot be treated as a Windows PC for games bought for Windows.

PS Remote Play
With Remote Play, the PS5 runs a supported PlayStation game. A Windows computer receives the console’s video and audio and sends controller input back to the console. Sony describes the Windows app as controlling the console from the PC; after connection, the console screen is displayed on the computer. The Windows computer is not running the game code.

PlayStation cloud streaming
Cloud streaming also does not run a Windows build. Sony’s service runs selected PlayStation games on its cloud infrastructure and sends the result to a supported PlayStation device. Eligibility is limited by game, subscription, region and platform, rather than by whether you own a Windows copy.
Can you run Windows games on PS5?

If the objective is to play a game released only for Windows, the reliable route is a compatible Windows gaming PC or another PC platform that supports that game. A PS5 accessory, adapter or subscription cannot supply the missing Windows execution environment.
How to use PS Remote Play with a Windows computer
Remote Play is useful when you want to play games installed on your PS5 from another room or on a Windows display. It does not make the PS5 play PC games, but the setup is straightforward when the console and network meet Sony’s requirements.
Check the computer requirements
- Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11.
- A 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later.
- At least 100 MB of available storage for the application.
- At least 2 GB of RAM.
- A display capable of 1,024 × 768 or higher.
- A sound card and an available USB port.
- A supported controller connected to the computer with a USB cable.
Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers for the PC and Mac Remote Play setup. The computer and PS5 also need internet access, and both devices’ network conditions affect responsiveness.

Prepare the PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want to wake the console while it is in Rest Mode, open the Rest Mode features and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
Connect from Windows
- Install the official PS Remote Play application on the Windows computer.
- Connect a DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 controller to the computer using a USB cable.
- Sign in to the application with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
- Choose the PS5 shown by the application and wait for the connection.
- Play a game that is running on the PS5. The computer is displaying and controlling that console session rather than launching a Windows version.
Network targets
Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download for Remote Play and at least 15 Mbps upload and download for the best performance. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of low latency or perfect image quality. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, distance from the router and other traffic can still cause delay, compression or disconnections.
What Remote Play can and cannot accept
Controller and keyboard input
The listed PlayStation controllers provide the standard Remote Play controls when connected to the Windows computer by USB. Some PlayStation games that support a hardware keyboard can also accept keyboard input from Windows or Mac. That keyboard input is sent into the PlayStation game session; it does not give Windows control over the PS5 or make a PC-only game compatible.
Games and peripherals that are excluded
Sony says Remote Play is not compatible with games that require a VR headset or additional peripherals beyond the listed controllers. Games that must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium are also excluded from Remote Play. Those limitations apply even though the title may otherwise be available through a PlayStation service.

What the Windows screen represents
Remote Play is a live console session. The PS5 remains the device performing the game’s processing, reading the installed game data and applying PlayStation account and licensing rules. Closing the application ends the remote view; it does not leave a Windows installation on the computer or a Windows installation on the PS5.

How PlayStation cloud streaming differs
Sony’s cloud-streaming option is a separate PlayStation offering. It is available for selected PS5 games on PS5 and PlayStation Portal with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. Eligible titles can include selected games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, along with selected digital PS5 games.
Eligibility changes by title and region
Cloud availability is not a blanket entitlement for every PlayStation game and does not include arbitrary Windows purchases. Sony says game availability varies over time and by region. Check the current PlayStation game finder and the account’s local region before assuming that a particular title can be streamed.
Bandwidth and session requirements
Sony lists at least 5 Mbps upload and download to establish a cloud-streaming session. Its product information also provides recommendations for different resolutions. A faster connection does not make an ineligible game available, and it does not convert a Windows license into a PlayStation license.

In Sony’s November 5, 2025 announcement, Portal’s Remote Play tab was described as connecting to a paired PS5 and playing games installed on that console. Cloud streaming gives PlayStation Plus Premium members access to a range of compatible PS5 games without waiting for downloads. Both functions remain limited to supported PlayStation software.

In that announcement, Takuro Fushimi, Senior Manager, Product Management at PlayStation, wrote: “Cloud Streaming unlocks new ways to play: enjoy a game side-by-side with a friend who’s using your PS5 under a separate account, or stream your favorite game while someone else watches a movie on the console.” The statement describes additional ways to use PlayStation software; it does not describe Windows compatibility.

Not as Steam or Windows builds. A Steam purchase normally licenses the PC version for a compatible PC platform. The PS5 does not provide a supported Steam client or a documented way to install and execute that Windows build.
If the same game has a separate PlayStation release, you can play that PlayStation version according to its own purchase, account and hardware requirements. A PlayStation edition is a different build from the Windows edition, even when the title, save features or online services overlap.
Remote Play can show a Steam game only when a separate Windows computer is actually running it and that computer is being remotely viewed through an appropriate PC-streaming arrangement. That is not the PS5 running the game, and it is not a capability supplied by Sony’s PS5 Remote Play app.

Why common “fixes” do not solve Windows compatibility
Buying a different controller
A controller changes how you provide input. It does not add Windows, a PC graphics stack or a Windows game launcher to the PS5. A supported controller is useful for Remote Play, but it cannot make a PC-only game execute on the console.
Adding a capture card or adapter
A capture device can move video between devices, and an adapter can change a physical connector or input format. Neither one supplies the operating system and software runtime required by a Windows game. They may be useful for recording or display routing, but they are not a Windows compatibility layer.
Using Portal as a Windows handheld
Portal is designed for PlayStation Remote Play and selected PS5 cloud titles. Its Remote Play connection goes to a paired PS5, while its cloud feature uses Sony’s eligible catalog. It is not a general Windows gaming handheld and cannot launch arbitrary PC libraries.

PlayStation Plus Premium expands access to selected PlayStation cloud titles. It does not include every PlayStation game, does not include arbitrary Windows games and does not replace a PC license. Catalog membership and cloud eligibility can change.
Troubleshooting Remote Play when the setup does not work
The PS5 is not found
- Confirm that Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play is on.
- Verify that the Windows app and PS5 use the same PlayStation account.
- Make sure the console is powered on or that Rest Mode networking options allow it to be awakened.
- Check that both devices have network access and that the controller is connected to the computer by USB.
The picture is blocky or controls feel delayed
- Measure the connection in both directions; Sony’s baseline is 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps recommended for best performance.
- Reduce competing traffic on the network and move the computer or console closer to the router where possible.
- Remember that meeting the bandwidth figure does not remove latency caused by routing, interference or congestion.
A particular game will not start remotely
- Check whether it requires a VR headset or an extra peripheral outside the supported controller list.
- Check whether the game must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium, which Sony excludes from Remote Play.
- Confirm that you are trying to launch the PlayStation version installed on the PS5, not a Windows-only version.

The practical answer
A PS5 is not a supported machine for running Windows game builds. Use a compatible Windows PC when the game is a Windows title. Use Remote Play when you want a Windows computer to control and display games that are running on your PS5, and use PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming only for the selected PlayStation games and regions Sony supports. Treat controllers, capture hardware, adapters and Portal as ways to interact with supported PlayStation sessions—not as a way to add Windows compatibility to the console.
