The Kingdom Hearts IV screenshots shared on May 14, 2025 showed Sora in combat alongside smaller glimpses of scenes and an enemy. They did not, by themselves, confirm that Mickey was playable. Square Enix has since confirmed that Mickey, Donald, and Goofy can be played as they search for information about Sora—but that later announcement does not prove what the earlier Mickey-related image depicted.
What the May 2025 screenshots showed
Game Informer reported that the development team shared the images on May 14, 2025 through the official Kingdom Hearts social accounts. Its description distinguishes prominent combat images featuring Sora from smaller pictures that appeared to show cinematic scenes and an enemy. The images were a limited visual update, not a complete gameplay demonstration.

The development team’s accompanying message, as reproduced by Game Informer, said: “We’re currently working hard on Kingdom Hearts IV and will continue pouring ourselves into the game’s development. We’re dedicated to making this an experience that lives up to your expectations!” The message was attributed to the development team, not to a named individual. Did the Mickey image prove he was playable?
No. The 2025 report noted that one image led to speculation about playable Mickey, but it also allowed that the image could simply use an unusual camera angle. That screenshot alone did not settle the question.

Square Enix later confirmed that Mickey, Donald, and Goofy are playable while they search for information about Sora. This establishes Mickey’s playable role in Kingdom Hearts IV, but it does not establish that the particular 2025 image showed him as a playable character. Square Enix’s August 16, 2026 announcement provides the later confirmation.

Story setting and Sora’s companions
Square Enix describes Sora as waking in Quadratum, a modern city. Donald and Goofy head to the Underworld to look for clues about where he is. The publisher also says players will travel through worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar properties. Its August 2026 announcement specifically revealed a world inspired by Coco. These announcements add current context; they should not be confused with details proved by the 2025 screenshots.

Combat
Square Enix describes combat as combining attacks and magic, building combos with a new battle feature, and changing Sora’s Keyblade to unlock unique attacks. Treat those as the publisher’s descriptions of mechanics. A screenshot may offer visual clues, but the cited material does not establish that every interface detail or animation in the images represents final game content. Release window and announced platforms
Square Enix’s latest cited announcement gives Kingdom Hearts IV a late 2027 release window. The publisher lists Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; its page names Xbox on PC, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. No day-specific release date is established in these announcements. They also do not establish performance, feature parity, or exclusive content across platforms.
