In the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance, lockpicking is a two-part movement: find the gold sweet spot, then turn the lock while moving the pick to keep tracking that spot. Holding the pick still or forcing the lock through resistance can damage or break it, making noise that may attract attention.
How lockpicking works
You need at least one lockpick to attempt a lock; carrying spares is sensible because picks can be damaged or broken. The interface shows how close the pick is to the sweet spot through the cursor size, and marks the correct position in gold. A community wiki’s transcription of the in-game tutorial puts the task plainly: “Then you have to use the lockpick to turn the whole lock mechanism.”
- Move the pick until the cursor indicates the gold sweet spot.
- Begin turning the lock mechanism while adjusting the pick to follow the sweet spot as it shifts.
- Keep the movements smooth. If the mechanism sticks, do not force it; correct the pick’s position before continuing.
Misalignment can damage or break the pick. The tutorial warns that damage makes noise and a break produces a louder snap, either of which may draw attention.
Controller controls and keyboard or mouse
A 2018 player-forum post describes the controller method as using the right stick to position and maintain the pick, and the left stick to turn the lock. The sticks need to move together as the sweet spot shifts. Check the control display in your current game for your platform and settings; the forum description may not match every setup.

There is no established best input method for every player. Choose the scheme that lets you coordinate the pick and lock comfortably, and use a low-risk lock to learn its timing before attempting a difficult one.
Why lockpicking feels difficult
The target does not stay in one place while the lock turns. You have to rotate the mechanism and keep the pick aligned with the moving sweet spot at the same time. Trying to focus on only one movement—or pushing through resistance instead of correcting alignment—can lead to a damaged pick, a break, and noise.

Lock difficulty and skill levels
The community wiki lists these lock categories and skill thresholds. Treat them as wiki-documented guidance, not independently verified patch-specific requirements.
| Lock category | Lockpicking level listed |

| Very Easy | 1 |
| Easy | 1 |
| Hard | 6 |
| Very Hard | 9–15; Luck of the Drunk can provide a route to attempting these from level 6 |
A practical approach is to start with easier locks and build the skill before moving on to harder ones. The available sources do not establish a guaranteed rate of skill gain or a universally optimal perk order.

Where to get more lockpicks
The community wiki lists these early-game sources:
- Merchants: millers Peshek, Woyzeck, and Simon, plus Votava in Talmberg, are listed as sellers.
- Peshek’s lesson: asking Peshek to teach you lockpicking is listed as a way to receive 15 picks.
- Loot: lockpicks are listed among loot from bandits and Cumans.
These locations and interactions are documented by the community wiki and may be subject to correction. Keep spare picks when you can, rather than relying on one for every attempt.

Lockpicking is not consequence-free if someone catches you. The tutorial warns that damaged picks and broken picks make noise; the wiki also notes that theft and lockpicking may cost reputation if you are caught. Consider whether anyone is nearby before trying a lock, especially after a failed attempt.
