For a first playthrough, follow the order in which the story was released and presented: Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, the remaining story presentations and games in the HD collections, Dream Drop Distance HD, 0.2 Birth by Sleep –A fragmentary passage–, then Kingdom Hearts III and its Re Mind DLC. Do not begin with the earliest event in the fictional timeline. The series deliberately reveals its history out of order, and that reveal is part of the experience.
This guide separates a practical beginner route from the in-universe chronology, explains what each collection actually contains, and identifies which entries are playable games versus cinematic story presentations.

The recommended Kingdom Hearts play order for beginners
Use this sequence for a first run. It follows the audience’s intended discoveries while keeping the major character and plot reveals in context.
- Kingdom Hearts –Final Mix–
- Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
- Kingdom Hearts II –Final Mix–
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (HD cinematic story presentation)
- Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep –Final Mix–
- Kingdom Hearts Re:coded (HD cinematic story presentation)
- Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD
- Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep –A fragmentary passage–
- Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover (cinematic film)
- Kingdom Hearts III
- Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind (DLC)
The middle of the list can feel unusual because the collections present some stories as films rather than playable remasters. Keep the order shown above when possible. If you prefer to experience 358/2 Days immediately after Re:Chain of Memories, that is a reasonable variation, but do not skip its story before starting Kingdom Hearts II if you want the character context to land as intended.

Why release presentation beats fictional chronology
The official timeline reaches back across several eras. χ Back Cover concerns the ancient Keyblade age; Birth by Sleep follows Terra, Ventus and Aqua before Sora’s original adventure; and 0.2 Birth by Sleep follows Aqua in the Realm of Darkness while setting up Kingdom Hearts III. Starting with those earliest events would expose mysteries that the original games expect you to learn gradually.
The first Kingdom Hearts establishes Sora, Donald and Goofy, their search for missing friends, and the spread of darkness. Re:Chain of Memories then takes that search into Castle Oblivion and makes memory itself a story problem. 358/2 Days shifts attention to Roxas and Organization XIII, while Kingdom Hearts II resumes Sora’s journey after a year of sleep. Playing those introductions in their released sequence preserves the intended emotional and narrative escalation.
What is in each HD collection?
Collections are purchase groupings, not chronological instructions. Square Enix’s collection listings use the following names and formats.
| Collection | Included experiences | How to treat them |
|---|---|---|
| KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX | KINGDOM HEARTS –FINAL MIX–; KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories; KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days; KINGDOM HEARTS II –FINAL MIX–; KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep –FINAL MIX–; KINGDOM HEARTS Re:coded | The first, second, and Birth by Sleep entries are playable games. 358/2 Days and Re:coded are presented as HD cinematic story material rather than playable remasters. |
| KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue | Dream Drop Distance HD; 0.2 Birth by Sleep –A fragmentary passage–; χ Back Cover | Dream Drop Distance and 0.2 are playable. χ Back Cover is a cinematic film covering part of the ancient Keyblade-era story. |
| KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind | Kingdom Hearts III and the Re Mind DLC | Play the base game first, then install and play Re Mind after its ending. |
The combined KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] groups these three packages through Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. Square Enix currently lists that combined collection for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Individual package support can differ, and the listing is a Japanese publisher page, so verify your territory, platform, edition and current store description before paying.
Step-by-step route through the story
1. Kingdom Hearts –Final Mix–
Begin with the original numbered adventure. Sora leaves his home after his friends Riku and Kairi disappear, then travels between worlds with Donald Duck and Goofy while investigating the Heartless and the growing darkness. This game teaches the series’ vocabulary—hearts, worlds, Keyblades and doors—without assuming prior knowledge.
Final Mix is the version to choose when it is available in your collection. It contains the expanded content associated with the definitive release rather than the original regional console edition.
2. Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
Continue directly with Re:Chain of Memories. Sora’s search leads to Castle Oblivion, where rooms and encounters are shaped by memory. The card-based combat is substantially different from the first game: attacks, magic and enemy actions are assembled into decks, so give yourself time to learn the system instead of treating an early defeat as a reason to skip the story.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The game also includes a separate Riku scenario. It is optional for understanding the next numbered title, but completing it provides important perspective on Riku’s recovery and on the organization operating inside the castle.
3. Kingdom Hearts II –Final Mix–
Kingdom Hearts II resumes the main adventure after Sora’s year of sleep. Its opening focuses on Roxas and the cost of the events in Castle Oblivion before Sora returns to the worlds. That opening is intentionally slower and more character-focused; do not assume something is wrong because Sora is not immediately playable.
The game expands the combat system, adds new party interactions and revisits worlds from the first title. Play through its ending before moving to the next collection entry.
4. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
In the HD collection, 358/2 Days is a sequence of edited cinematics rather than a playable remaster. It follows Roxas during his time with Organization XIII and explains relationships that Kingdom Hearts II introduces with limited context. Watch the complete presentation; it is not a short trailer or a selection of bonus scenes.
5. Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep –Final Mix–
Birth by Sleep is playable and follows three protagonists—Terra, Ventus and Aqua—whose paths unfold before Sora’s original adventure. Select each character’s story when prompted, and finish all three routes. Their campaigns overlap in time but reveal different locations, motives and consequences, so playing only one route leaves major gaps.
Although this game is earlier in the fictional chronology, it works better here because later games assume that you already know the original series and can recognize the significance of these characters.
6. Kingdom Hearts Re:coded
Re:coded appears in HD 1.5+2.5 as a cinematic story presentation. It follows an investigation into a digital version of the journal and supplies connective information after Kingdom Hearts II. You do not need to search for a separate playable version inside the collection; the listed HD entry is the film presentation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
7. Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD
Dream Drop Distance HD is the next full game. Sora and Riku undertake a Mark of Mastery examination, visiting sleeping worlds and alternating between the two heroes. The Drop mechanic switches characters during a world, so monitor the Drop gauge and plan your progress rather than assuming you can remain with one character indefinitely.
This title introduces concepts and characters that become central to the approach to Kingdom Hearts III. Finish both protagonists’ portions and the ending before continuing.
8. Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep –A fragmentary passage–
0.2 is a short, playable bridge centered on Aqua in the Realm of Darkness. Its framing connects the events of Birth by Sleep to the situation leading into Kingdom Hearts III. Because it is designed as a lead-in, play it after Dream Drop Distance, not immediately after the full Birth by Sleep campaign.
9. Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover
χ Back Cover is a cinematic film about the ancient Foretellers and the Keyblade era. It supplies background for the wider conflict rather than functioning as another numbered adventure. Watch it before Kingdom Hearts III if you want that context, but do not mistake its ancient setting for a reason to make it your starting point.
10. Kingdom Hearts III
After the preparatory games and films, play Kingdom Hearts III. It brings Sora’s long-running conflict with the forces of darkness toward its main conclusion and revisits the worlds and characters established across the preceding entries. The game assumes familiarity with the earlier stories, particularly the events involving Roxas, the three Birth by Sleep protagonists, Riku, Aqua and the Organization.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →11. Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind
Install Re Mind only after completing the base game’s ending. The DLC revisits the climax from another perspective and adds post-game material. Starting it before the main story can spoil its purpose and presentation.
Release order versus chronological order
A strict fictional chronology would place the ancient Keyblade-era material first, then the events of Birth by Sleep, followed by the original Sora-era games and later bridge stories. That approach is useful for reference, but it is not the recommended first-play route.

| Route | Strength | Trade-off | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release/presentation order | Preserves mystery, character introductions and the way the saga was written for its audience. | Some prequels appear after games whose events occur later in-universe. | First-time players and anyone who wants the intended reveals. |
| Chronological order | Places ancient and prequel events before the original adventure, making the historical sequence easier to map. | Can spoil identities, motivations and twists that later games expect you to discover. | Returning players, lore study and second playthroughs. |
The official timeline includes entries from different eras and formats, including films, mobile-game narratives and short experiences. Because of that mixture, a single granular list can imply a precision that is not useful for a beginner. Use the release route first, then consult chronology as a reference once you know the major characters.
What to buy first
Starting with one package
HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX is the practical starting point because it contains Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and Birth by Sleep Final Mix, plus the cinematic presentations of 358/2 Days and Re:coded. It covers the largest portion of the early route in one collection.
Recommended Free Tools
Completing the route
Add HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue for Dream Drop Distance HD, 0.2 and χ Back Cover. Then obtain Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind for the third numbered game and its DLC.
Buying the combined collection
If your platform and territory list the combined KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III], it groups the three packages in one purchase. Check the live store entry carefully: platform support, language options, included DLC and regional catalogues can change, and the publisher’s current platform list does not guarantee identical availability in every country.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Playable games and cinematic entries at a glance
- Playable in the listed collections: Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Birth by Sleep Final Mix, Dream Drop Distance HD and 0.2 Birth by Sleep.
- Cinematic story presentations: 358/2 Days, Re:coded and χ Back Cover.
- Playable base game plus DLC: Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind.
That distinction matters when planning time. A collection listing six “experiences” does not mean six full-length, playable console games. The publisher uses the entries to identify what is included, while the format varies from game to film.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Starting with the earliest date
Beginning with χ Back Cover or Birth by Sleep may seem logical, but it front-loads background and can reveal information intended to reframe earlier games. Follow the recommended route for a first run.

Expecting every named entry to be a remaster
Check the format before purchase. The collection names identify included experiences, not identical product types.
Playing Re Mind first
Re Mind is designed around the completed Kingdom Hearts III story. Finish the base game before launching the DLC.
Assuming platform lists are universal
Store availability differs by package, platform and region. Verify the exact local listing rather than relying on a general collection name or a listing from another territory.
How large is the series?
Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million units in global package shipments and digital sales for the series in 2025. This is an attributed, series-wide aggregate; it is not the sales total for Kingdom Hearts III or any other single entry, and it does not provide a game-by-game breakdown.
A simple first-play checklist
- Secure access to HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind, or confirm that a combined collection on your platform contains all three.
- Start with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, not the oldest event in the timeline.
- Play Re:Chain of Memories and its Riku scenario before Kingdom Hearts II.
- Watch the complete 358/2 Days presentation, then play all three Birth by Sleep campaigns.
- Watch Re:coded, play Dream Drop Distance HD, then 0.2.
- Watch χ Back Cover before Kingdom Hearts III if you want its ancient-era context.
- Complete Kingdom Hearts III before starting Re Mind.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I skip Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days because it is not playable in the collection?
You can skip it mechanically, but not if you want the complete narrative. The HD collection presents it as a cinematic story, and it provides essential context for Roxas and Organization XIII before and around Kingdom Hearts II.
Should I play Birth by Sleep before the original Kingdom Hearts?
Not on a first playthrough. Birth by Sleep is earlier in the fictional chronology, but its characters and revelations were designed to be understood after the earlier Sora-era games. Play it after Kingdom Hearts II and 358/2 Days.
Do I need Re Mind to finish Kingdom Hearts III?
The base game contains the main Kingdom Hearts III campaign. Re Mind is additional DLC intended to be played after that ending, so treat it as a post-game continuation rather than a prerequisite to start the game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs the Kingdom Hearts Collection [I–III] identical on every platform?
No guarantee is stated. Square Enix lists the combined collection across several platforms, but individual package support and regional store contents can differ. Check your local listing for the exact edition, included DLC and platform.
