Quick answer: Mega Evolution lasts eight hours, and only one of your Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be active at a time. While it is active, catches that share a type with it can award additional Candy. In raids, every Trainer gets a boost to all attacks, with a further boost for attacks matching the Mega Pokémon’s type; simultaneous Mega bonuses do not stack. A previously Mega-Evolved Pokémon can eventually be used again without Mega Energy after its rest period, which Niantic says can last up to several days.
The details below explain how to schedule a Mega for catches, decide which form or species to activate for a raid, and avoid wasting species-specific Mega Energy.

How long Mega Evolution lasts
Once activated, a Mega-Evolved Pokémon remains in that form for eight hours. It then automatically returns to its regular form. You cannot keep two Mega Evolutions active simultaneously: a Trainer may have only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon active at a time. If you Mega Evolve another Pokémon, the current active Mega is replaced.

The individual Pokémon keeps its Mega Level, and repeated Mega Evolutions of that same Pokémon raise the level over time. Planning an eight-hour window
- Activate shortly before the catches or raid block that matters; activating hours before you start spends part of the active period unused.
- For a Community Day, a type-themed event, or a long grinding session, align the start with your first intended catches.
- For a raid, activate before entering the lobby so the Mega is present when the battle begins and its team-wide effect is available.
- Check which Mega is active before starting another evolution, because the second activation replaces the first rather than extending both.
When can you Mega Evolve the same Pokémon for free?
The first Mega Evolution of a Pokémon requires Mega Energy. After that Pokémon has transformed, it enters a rest period. When the rest period ends, you can Mega Evolve that same Pokémon again without paying Mega Energy. Niantic describes the rest as potentially lasting up to several days; its current help page does not provide a complete, fixed number-of-days table for every species or Mega Level.
If you do not want to wait, you can pay the reduced Mega Energy cost shown in the game. Repeatedly Mega Evolving a specific Pokémon lowers the amount required over time. The reduction applies to that individual Pokémon’s history of Mega Evolutions, not to every member of the species in your storage.
What the cooldown does—and does not—mean
- It is Pokémon-specific: the rest status belongs to the particular Pokémon you evolved.
- It is not a permanent lock: the same Pokémon becomes eligible for a free Mega Evolution when its rest period finishes.
- It is not a universal schedule: do not assume every species, Mega Level, or evolution count uses the same exact timer.
- It is separate from Mega Energy: waiting for rest and spending Energy are alternative ways to activate the same Pokémon again.
How to check eligibility in game
- Open the Pokémon’s detail page and look for the Mega Evolution button.
- Read the displayed Mega Energy cost and any rest-period or free-use indicator.
- If the free option is available, confirm the form you want before tapping Mega Evolve.
- If it is still resting, either wait for the displayed status to clear or accept the reduced Energy cost if the raid or catch window cannot wait.
Do Mega Evolutions give extra Candy?
Yes, but the condition is type matching. While your active Mega-Evolved Pokémon is present, catching a Pokémon that shares a type with that Mega can award additional Pokémon Candy. For example, a Mega whose typing includes Fire can provide the catch bonus for a Fire-type target; the target does not need to be the same species.

Treat the bonus as an extra opportunity tied to the shared type, not as a guaranteed number you can plan around.
Using the Candy bonus efficiently
- Choose a Mega that overlaps the type of the species you expect to catch most.
- Prioritize the Mega Level of the individual you will actually activate; level progress stays with that Pokémon.
- Start the Mega before the encounter sequence, not after you have already caught the first targets.
- During events with boosted spawns, concentrate on one or two matching types so the eight-hour window produces more eligible catches.
- Do not spend Energy solely because you need a precise Candy total—the official rule does not promise one.
What boosts do Mega Pokémon provide in raids?
While a Mega-Evolved Pokémon is battling in a raid, it grants a raid-wide attack boost to all Trainers’ Pokémon. Attacks whose type matches the Mega Pokémon’s type receive an additional attack boost on top of the general one. This means a Mega can support teammates even when they are not using the same species, while a matching-type attacking lineup gains the strongest benefit.

These bonuses are calculated as a team effect, not as a personal-only buff. However, multiple Mega bonuses do not add together. If more than one Mega-Evolved Pokémon is battling simultaneously, the game applies the highest applicable attack boost rather than stacking every Mega’s contribution.
How to choose a Mega for a raid
- Identify the boss’s weakness and your group’s planned attack type. A Mega that matches that attack type can provide the additional matching-type benefit.
- Check the Mega’s own typing. The general boost applies to all attacks, while the extra portion is tied to attacks matching the Mega’s type.
- Coordinate in larger groups. Because bonuses do not stack, multiple players should avoid assuming that several Megas create a multiplied team effect. Choose the Mega that gives the highest applicable boost for the lineup.
- Confirm the Mega is on the battlefield. The raid effect is relevant while the Mega-Evolved Pokémon is battling, so build a party that lets it enter the fight rather than faint immediately.
- Balance support and damage. A Mega chosen only for its boost still needs to survive long enough to contribute; compare its typing, moves, and your available counters.
Do Mega raid boosts stack?
No. If multiple Mega-Evolved Pokémon are battling at the same time, their bonuses do not stack. Niantic’s Help Center says that “the highest possible attack boost will be applied.” In practice, adding a second Mega does not create a second layer of the same raid-wide effect; the battle uses the strongest applicable boost available under the rules.
This is why a group should decide which Mega best fits the boss and the team’s attack types instead of treating every additional Mega as an automatic damage multiplier. A second player can still use a Mega for its own damage, typing, or survivability, but the first Mega’s team bonus is not duplicated.
Mega Energy: what it is and how to get it
Mega Energy is different from ordinary Pokémon Candy. It is tied to a particular species and cannot be freely substituted between unrelated Pokémon. Energy earned for one species does not pay the Mega Evolution cost of another species.
Available sources
- Mega Raids: defeat the Mega Pokémon in its raid to receive that species’ Mega Energy.
- Specific research: some research tasks award Mega Energy for the species named in the task or reward.
- Buddy walking: you may occasionally earn Mega Energy by walking with a Buddy from an evolutionary line that has previously Mega-Evolved.
Mega Raid Energy rewards depend on how quickly the raid boss is defeated. The post-battle Speed result affects the amount, so there is no single universal payout to assume for every raid.

Multiple Mega forms
When a species has more than one Mega form, the forms can use separate Energy. Charizard is the official example: Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y have distinct Energy requirements. The first time you choose a form, you pay that form’s full initial cost. Repeatedly choosing that same form then benefits from the reduced future cost, but the other form still needs its own first full-cost Mega Evolution before its repeat reductions apply.

Rayquaza has an additional prerequisite. It must be taught the move Dragon Ascent with a Meteorite before it can Mega Evolve. Having Rayquaza Mega Energy alone does not satisfy that move requirement.
What Mega Levels change
Mega Level is attached to the individual Pokémon and increases as that Pokémon is Mega-Evolved repeatedly. The level remains after the eight-hour transformation ends. Higher levels activate more bonuses while the Pokémon is Mega-Evolved, making a frequently used Pokémon more valuable than an untouched replacement with the same species and moves.
Niantic’s current overview lists a specific additional Charged Attack power progression for Pokémon that reach Super Max Level:
| Mega Level | Additional Charged Attack power multiplier |
|---|---|
| Base Level | 1.0 |
| High Level | 1.1 |
| Max Level | 1.2 |
| Super Max Level | 1.3 |
Those multipliers describe the additional Charged Attack feature in Niantic’s overview for the specified Pokémon and levels. Do not generalize this particular table into a promise that every Mega Pokémon receives exactly the same set of bonuses.

Which Mega should you activate?
There is no universal best Mega. The right choice depends on what you are doing during the active window.
| Goal | Most useful decision factor | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Farming Candy | Type overlap with the Pokémon you plan to catch | That the target shares a type with the active Mega |
| Supporting a raid | Type overlap with the raid team’s attacks | Which matching-type attacks will be used and whether another Mega already supplies the highest boost |
| Saving Energy | The individual Pokémon’s repeat history and rest status | Whether free reuse is available or the reduced cost is acceptable |
| Choosing a form | The selected form’s Energy and role | Separate form Energy, initial full cost, and any prerequisite such as Dragon Ascent |
| Long-term investment | Current Mega Level | Which individual has the level progress you want to build |
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming the Candy bonus has a guaranteed number
Problem: You budget an event around a precise extra-Candy figure that the official rule does not state.
Fix: Use the shared-type condition as the reliable requirement and treat the amount as variable unless a current, separately verified rule says otherwise.
Waiting for a fixed cooldown that the game never promised
Problem: You expect every species to become free after the same number of hours or days.

Stacking several Megas for a larger team buff
Problem: A raid group brings multiple Megas expecting their boosts to multiply.
Fix: Select the Mega that supplies the highest applicable boost for the matchup. Additional Megas may still deal damage, but the team bonus itself does not stack.
Confusing Candy with Mega Energy
Problem: You save regular Candy or Energy for the wrong species.
Fix: Track the two currencies separately. Mega Energy is species-specific, and form-specific requirements can apply when a species has multiple Mega options.
Expecting to catch the boss in Mega form
Problem: You plan your encounter around catching the raid boss as a Mega.
Fix: After the Mega Raid is defeated, the boss returns to its regular form before the catch encounter.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-activation checklist
- Decide whether the window is for type-matched catches, a raid, or both.
- Choose the individual Pokémon with the relevant typing, Mega Level, moves, and available Energy.
- For a multi-form species, select the intended form and confirm its separate Energy requirement.
- Check whether the Pokémon is resting and whether free reuse is available.
- For Rayquaza, confirm that Dragon Ascent was taught with a Meteorite.
- Start the Mega close to the first catch or raid lobby you want to affect.
- During a raid, tell teammates which Mega is active so they do not expect non-stacking boosts to multiply.
- Afterward, review the Pokémon’s Mega Level and rest status before planning the next session.
