Before Kingdom Hearts III, know this: Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy are heading into a final conflict with Master Xehanort, whose plan threatens to bring about another Keyblade War. The game follows Kingdom Hearts II and concludes the Dark Seeker saga, but this is a broad orientation—not a complete, beat-by-beat recap of every game in between.

What happened before Kingdom Hearts III?

Square Enix’s 2013 announcement called Kingdom Hearts III “the first core sequel to Kingdom Hearts II.” It described the earlier conflicts surrounding Kingdom Hearts as part of Master Xehanort’s plan to cause a Keyblade War. In a 2019 retrospective, Square Enix described Kingdom Hearts III as the long-awaited conclusion to the Dark Seeker saga, with Sora facing Xehanort.

That gives you the main thread to carry into the game: the heroes are trying to stop Xehanort’s plan and prepare for a looming clash. The official descriptions establish that setup, but do not provide a full account of every intervening game’s events, character revelations, or chronology. If you have been away from the series, you can still start with this central conflict in mind; if you want all the connective story, use the catch-up options below.

What is Sora’s mission, and who is with him?

Sora travels with Donald Duck and Goofy. In its 2013 announcement, Square Enix described the trio searching Disney worlds for the “Key to Return Hearts,” while King Mickey and Riku searched for previous Keyblade wielders. The publisher’s official Kingdom Hearts III product description frames the adventure as the friends resisting the Heartless across Disney and Pixar worlds.

The worlds include settings associated with Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Big Hero 6, Tangled, and Hercules. The crossover worlds are the setting for the journey; the central saga conflict is the threat posed by Xehanort and the search for the forces needed to face it.

What should you know about the Keyblade War and guardians of light?

Square Enix’s early framing describes Xehanort as seeking to cause a Keyblade War. Against that threat, Sora and his allies need to find seven guardians of light. These are the key stakes to recognize before starting: a dangerous plan is coming to fruition, and the heroes are gathering those who can stand against it. The publisher’s summary does not, by itself, explain every character’s role or how each prior game leads to this point, so treat this as the premise rather than a detailed chronology.

Do you need to play the other Kingdom Hearts games first?

No single answer fits every player. If you mainly want to follow the immediate adventure, the publisher’s broad setup gives you a starting point. If you want the series’ accumulated context, playing earlier entries will give you more of it. Square Enix’s 2019 retrospective says the five Memory Archives videos were useful context but “not essential to enjoy the game.” That is the publisher’s guidance, not a promise that every plot thread will make sense without prior familiarity.

How can you catch up before playing?

Option What it offers What to check
Start Kingdom Hearts III The game’s publisher-provided premise centers on Sora, Donald, and Goofy, Xehanort’s plan, and the search for allies. This is the quickest route, but it does not provide a full recap of earlier installments.
Memory Archives Square Enix described five videos summarizing the saga so far in the context of the 2019 Kingdom Hearts III demo. The 2019 retrospective calls them helpful but not essential. It does not confirm that the videos remain accessible on every platform in 2026.
Kingdom Hearts – The Story So Far The official North American store listing identifies this as a PS4 compilation containing HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. It includes playable games as well as remastered cinematics. Check platform compatibility and the current edition before purchase. The collection covers substantial prior story material, but is not a claim that every franchise release is included.
KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] Square Enix lists a collection described as a way to play I–III together. The listing alone does not settle its precise included editions or whether a physical format is offered; verify the current listing before choosing it.
