Kingmakers combines medieval army command with direct third-person combat—and then adds modern weapons to an alternate-history war. That is an unusually bold twist on the medieval real-time strategy formula. Calling it the “best” is a matter of taste, though: the game has not yet been released, so its systems cannot be judged through public hands-on play.
What is the twist in Kingmakers?
Kingmakers is an action-strategy sandbox built around a time-travel premise: a modern fighter goes back to medieval England with contemporary weapons to change the course of a war. The official Steam listing describes battles as real-time simulations involving thousands of soldiers; that scale is a developer description, not an independently measured performance figure.
The central gameplay idea is that you can alternate between directing the battle and fighting in it. From a top-down strategy view, you command troops; in third person, you take direct control of your character and use modern weapons against medieval forces. The Kingmakers Team described the switch in its August 4, 2025 developer blog: “you can seamlessly switch between top-down strategy and third-person combat at any time.”
That pairing changes the player’s role. Rather than treating the army only as formations on a map or the battle only as an action encounter, Kingmakers aims to let one player move between battlefield command and close-up intervention. Its modern weapons and vehicles make that contrast especially pronounced.

How its strategy systems are described
In a September 2026 official deep-dive announcement, the developers outlined systems including weapons, abilities, resources, building, commanding, enemy waves, vehicles, officers, progression, upgrades and four-player co-op. Their description also highlights individually AI-driven troops, six troop types, siege and deployable weapons, and control through the strategy camera.
The developers frame the battlefield systems as drawing on Total War, while the individual units recall Mount & Blade. Those are the developers’ reference points, not evidence that Kingmakers plays better than either series. The meaningful distinction to watch is how well its individual-unit behavior and large-scale command work together with direct third-person combat.

Why “the best” is still an open question
The concept is a strong candidate for the most unusual medieval-RTS hook: it puts modern weapons into a medieval conflict and gives players both command-level and character-level control. But premise alone cannot establish that it is the best twist, or even that the switch between strategy and action feels satisfying in play.
Whether the combination succeeds will depend on details not settled by a feature list: how legible the battlefield remains, whether troop behavior is convincing, how smoothly control changes between views, and whether building, upgrades and co-op deepen the strategy rather than distract from it. Those are questions for playable access and independent evaluation, not claims that can be proven from promotional descriptions.

Is Kingmakers historically accurate?
No. The official FAQ characterizes time travel as fictional while saying the developers aim to honor some historical events in medieval England; it places the player in 1461. The developer lore post draws on Owain Glyndŵr’s Welsh rebellion, but the game builds an alternate timeline around that inspiration. “Historically inspired alternate history” is more accurate than calling it a historically accurate simulation.

As of October 8, 2026, the official Steam listing says the game is “Coming soon” and not yet available. The official channel is promoting playtest access through Steam’s “REQUEST ACCESS” button, but that is not a confirmed release date or a guarantee of access. A PC Gamer report dated September 14, 2026 also said no new release date had been announced and the listing remained “Coming soon.” Check the Steam page for current release and playtest status, since both can change.
