The result is not just lap racing: Air Ride, City Trial, Top Ride, and Road Trip offer distinct ways to play.

How does the racing work?
Nintendo describes choosing a rider and a machine, then using Boost Charge and Quick Spin during races and battles. Machines move forward automatically. Holding Boost Charge brakes and lets the rider drift while filling a gauge; releasing it when full triggers a dash. Quick Spin is an attack mechanic, so positioning and timing matter alongside building speed. The basic controls are therefore about managing charge, boosts, and attacks rather than steering through a conventional accelerator-and-brake setup.
Riders and machines are selected separately. Nintendo’s UK game page names Kirby, Meta Knight, and King Dedede among the riders, and the Warp Star, Wheelie Bike, and Chariot among the machines. Nintendo UK’s game overview describes the broader experience as vehicle action spanning races and arena battles.

What modes are included?
Air Ride
Air Ride is the race-focused format, built around moving through courses while using charge, boosts, and attacks. It is also one of the modes represented in Road Trip challenges.
City Trial
City Trial broadens the format beyond a straightforward race. It is one of the modes drawn on by Road Trip, alongside Air Ride and Top Ride.
Top Ride
Top Ride switches to a top-down view. Players choose riders and machines separately. Nintendo’s October 23, 2025 presentation says it supports up to eight players online, or three other players offline on one system with four CPUs.
Road Trip
Road Trip is story-driven and strings together challenges from Air Ride, City Trial, and Top Ride. Its activities include races, battles, and Field Events; players collect machines and items between challenges. This makes it the clearest choice for players who want a sequence of different activities rather than a single race format.

Should you buy the game or an amiibo?
If you want to play, start by choosing between the physical and digital Nintendo Switch 2 editions; both are listed by Nintendo. Confirm that the listing is specifically for Switch 2 before buying. Current third-party prices and stock vary, and are not established here.
The Kirby Air Riders rider-machine dual-pack amiibo is an optional collectible, not a game requirement. Nintendo describes its figures as mix-and-match rider and machine components. Compatible figures can appear in-game as Figure Players, which gain levels and machine proficiency through racing. Nintendo Support also says compatible amiibo can grant rewards, and that scanning a Kirby Air Riders figure again after training saves its progress. See Nintendo’s amiibo product information and Nintendo Support’s compatibility information.
Version 1.3.3’s update page lists Sword Kirby & Dragoon and Noir Dedede & Hydra as supported figures. Check Nintendo Support for the current list, since compatibility can change with updates. Nintendo’s listed functions establish what compatible figures do, not that one combination performs better than another.
