It is not an automatic upgrade over Mario Kart World: TechRadar preferred Mario Kart’s larger cast and course list, while Nintendo Life highlighted Air Riders’ distinctive mechanics and learning curve. Which one suits you depends on whether you value mode variety and mechanical depth or a wider roster and track selection.
How Kirby Air Riders compares with Mario Kart World
Both are Nintendo Switch 2 racing games, but Kirby Air Riders is better understood as vehicle action built around races, arena battles and several different ways to play—not simply another circuit racer. Nintendo describes it as a fast-paced vehicle action game in which players “charge, boost, and spin to attack your rivals.” Nintendo’s UK product page also identifies racing on the ground and in the air as part of the game.

That difference shapes the comparison. TechRadar praised Air Riders’ variety and replay potential but said Mario Kart World had the edge for that reviewer because of its larger cast and track list. Its review also flags trade-offs in Air Riders: powerful City Trial setups can be hard to control, some minigames feel short, and Road Trip’s gameplay can become repetitive. Those are review judgments, not objective measures, but they point to the practical choice: Air Riders favors varied modes and a more unusual mechanical challenge; Mario Kart World may be the more appealing pick if roster and course breadth matter most.

What makes Air Riders different to play
The core is not just steering through a course. Nintendo’s US product page says holding B lets Kirby drift and releasing it produces a burst of speed; Nintendo also describes charging, boosting and spinning to attack rivals. The game’s machines include the Warp Star, Wheelie Bike and Chariot, while riders such as Kirby, Meta Knight and King Dedede bring different abilities. Nintendo’s US listing and UK listing provide the official product details.

Nintendo Life’s review says the mechanics take time to click: players need to learn the rules, tracks, riders and machines. The review sees those differences—and rider specials—as a source of depth. In practical terms, expect experimentation rather than assuming every character-machine combination will feel interchangeable. Players who enjoy mastering a system may find that learning curve satisfying; players looking for immediate familiarity should allow time to adjust.
Four modes, with City Trial at the center of the variety
Air Ride
Air Ride is one of the game’s principal racing modes. Nintendo says it can be played solo or in multiplayer, locally or online. Its inclusion gives the game a more direct race option alongside its less conventional formats.
City Trial
City Trial changes the shape of a session: players gather power-ups around a city, can switch machines, and then face off in frantic battles. That structure makes it less like simply repeating a circuit and is a major reason Air Riders feels different from a standard kart racer. TechRadar found the mode exciting, while warning that powerful setups can become difficult to control.
Rank #2
- Charge, boost, and spin to attack your rivals in this vehicle action game featuring Kirby and crew
- Use the Boost Charge button to brake and control your turns as your machine fights for top speed
- Fill up your Boost Charge Gauge and then release to trigger an explosive dash
- Choose from a variety of riders like Kirby and Meta Knight, each with their own stats and Specials
- Zip around Skyah in City Trial: a free-for-all battle for 16 players online or 8 players via local wireless
Top Ride
Top Ride is another principal mode, and Nintendo lists it among the modes playable solo or in multiplayer, locally or online. TechRadar counts it as part of the game’s extra variety.
Road Trip
Road Trip is the single-player story mode. It gives solo players a campaign option without requiring online play. TechRadar’s reservation is that its gameplay can feel repetitive, so it may be a better fit for players who want a structured solo route through the game than for those expecting every stage to transform the core action.

Consider Air Riders if you want a second racer that plays differently rather than a direct substitute. Its four-mode structure, arena-style City Trial and rider-machine distinctions offer a different kind of variety. If your main priority is a larger cast and more courses, TechRadar’s comparison favors Mario Kart World on those points. Neither preference settles the question for everyone: one game’s breadth of modes and mechanics is not the same as breadth of tracks or characters.

- Mario Kart World may be the better fit if the larger cast and track list highlighted by TechRadar matter more to you.
- Owning both makes sense if you want distinct racing experiences rather than two versions of the same game.
Multiplayer, updates and buying details
Nintendo says Air Ride, City Trial and Top Ride support solo or multiplayer play, locally or online; Road Trip is single-player. Online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, and Nintendo cautions that online services may not be available in every country. That membership is not required for Road Trip. Check Nintendo’s UK product information for its online terms.
Nintendo Support documents version-sensitive multiplayer additions, including GameShare support, Grand Prix mode for Air Ride matches in paddocks, continuous Sub-In Series matches, and two players participating in paddocks and Quick Matches from one Switch 2 system. These capabilities depend on the installed game version; consult Nintendo Support’s update information and check that your game is up to date before relying on a particular feature.
