kltrace.dll errors may appear as: “The program can’t start because kltrace.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” kltrace.dll was associated with older Kaspersky antivirus software, so the safest repair is usually to restore or reinstall the Kaspersky installation that originally supplied it.

You may also see:

  • kltrace.dll was not found.
  • Error loading kltrace.dll.
  • The specified module kltrace.dll could not be found.
  • C:...kltrace.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

These are representative Windows DLL-loader messages. The exact wording depends on which program is trying to load the file.

  • Kaspersky is installed and the error appears when it starts: repair, update, or reinstall that Kaspersky product.
  • The error appeared after a Kaspersky scan: inspect Quarantine before reinstalling anything.
  • Kaspersky was recently removed or updated: uninstall leftover components, then reinstall the correct product.
  • The file is outside a Kaspersky folder: treat it as suspicious and scan it rather than copying it into a Windows folder.
  • Several unrelated Windows programs also fail: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
  • The error mentions a program you no longer use: remove its stale startup entry or uninstall the obsolete program.
  • The error appeared after restoring a backup or system image: reinstall the affected Kaspersky product.
  • You were about to download kltrace.dll separately: do not. A standalone DLL can be malicious, mismatched, or incomplete.

What kltrace.dll is

kltrace.dll is identified as the Kaspersky Anti-Virus Trace Library, a tracing or diagnostic component associated with older Kaspersky antivirus software. Public file information most strongly connects it with Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations and an older Kaspersky installation directory.

The filename does not identify a Windows component. There is no verified evidence that it belongs to Windows, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a standard Microsoft driver package. It should be treated as a third-party Kaspersky application file.

Kaspersky uses tracing functions to help diagnose application behavior. That general purpose fits the name, but it does not prove that current Kaspersky products still use this exact filename. Do not assume that installing a current Kaspersky release will recreate a legacy kltrace.dll.

The exact file version, size, hash, architecture, and supported Windows versions are not reliably established. Avoid repair instructions that depend on those values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should the file be located

The reported legacy location is:

C:Program FilesKaspersky LabKaspersky Anti-Virus for Workstation 5

The actual location may differ according to the Kaspersky edition, installation history, language, operating-system architecture, and product version.

It should normally be beside or within the Kaspersky program that needs it, not in:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those folders contain Windows system components and architecture-specific system files. They are not general-purpose storage locations for third-party DLLs.

Check the path safely

  1. Press Win+S.
  2. Search for Kaspersky.
  3. Right-click the installed Kaspersky application and select Open file location, if available.
  4. In File Explorer, right-click the shortcut and select Open file location again if it points to a shortcut folder.
  5. Look for the executable and related Kaspersky files.
  6. Search that folder for kltrace.dll.

You can also search from File Explorer:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. In the search box, enter kltrace.dll.
  4. Wait for the search to finish.
  5. Record every path found, but do not open or run an unfamiliar copy.

A copy inside an old Kaspersky installation folder is more consistent with legitimate software. A copy in a temporary folder, browser directory, user profile, or unrelated application folder deserves additional malware checking.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Kaspersky installation

This is the most likely solution when the error appears while starting Kaspersky or shortly after a Kaspersky update or uninstall.

Identify the installed product

  1. Press Win+I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for Kaspersky.
  5. Record the exact product name and version.
  6. Also note whether more than one Kaspersky product is listed.

Do not remove a product until you know which one is associated with the error. An old startup entry may refer to a legacy installation even when a newer Kaspersky product is installed.

Try the product’s own repair option

  1. In Installed apps, select the Kaspersky entry.
  2. Choose Modify, Change, Repair, or a similar option if Windows provides one.
  3. Follow the Kaspersky setup instructions.
  4. Keep activation details available if the installer requests them.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Run the application that previously produced the error.

A successful repair usually means the application opens normally and the missing-file message does not return.

Reinstall from Kaspersky

If repair is unavailable or fails:

  1. Save any Kaspersky activation or account information.
  2. Close Kaspersky and other open programs.
  3. In Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select the affected Kaspersky product.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Follow the removal wizard.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Obtain the installer from Kaspersky’s official product-support or official antivirus-download page.
  8. For an old product, use Kaspersky’s legacy-product support route rather than assuming the newest installer is compatible.
  9. Install the product.
  10. Restart Windows again.
  11. Test the application that reported kltrace.dll.

Do not assume that a modern Kaspersky installer contains a legacy tracing library. If the affected program is an old Kaspersky release, the original supported installer or Kaspersky support may be necessary.

If the error remains after reinstalling, continue to the section on stale startup entries. The message may be coming from an old service, scheduled task, shortcut, or wrapper rather than the newly installed product.

Fix 2: Check Kaspersky Quarantine

A security product may have deleted or quarantined the file because it was damaged, modified, or falsely detected. Do not immediately restore it just because the filename matches.

Inspect Quarantine

The wording varies by Kaspersky version, but the usual process is:

  1. Open the Kaspersky application.
  2. Select Security or More tools.
  3. Open Quarantine, Backup, or the detected-object area.
  4. Search for kltrace.dll.
  5. Open the item’s details.
  6. Check its original path.
  7. Confirm that the path belonged to the Kaspersky installation you still use.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The original path was a genuine Kaspersky installation directory.
  • The related Kaspersky product is still installed.
  • The item has been assessed as safe or a false positive.
  • Kaspersky is fully updated.
  • You are not restoring a copy from a temporary or unrelated location.

After restoring it, restart Windows and test the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kaspersky warns that restoring quarantined files can reintroduce threats. If the file is quarantined again immediately, stop restoring it repeatedly. Update Kaspersky, run a full scan, and contact Kaspersky support or reinstall the product from a clean official installer.

If Quarantine contains no copy, reinstalling the parent Kaspersky application is safer than obtaining the DLL separately.

Fix 3: Check whether malware or a DLL hijack is involved

The filename alone does not prove that a file is legitimate. Malware can use a familiar filename to appear trustworthy.

Inspect the file without launching it:

  1. Right-click the suspicious kltrace.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review the General tab for its full location.
  4. Check the Digital Signatures tab if one is present.
  5. Select a signature and choose Details.
  6. Check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
  7. Note the creation and modification dates, but do not treat a date alone as proof.

A file outside a Kaspersky directory, especially in a temporary folder or an unrelated application’s directory, requires independent scanning.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a scan with your installed security software:

  1. Right-click the containing folder.
  2. Select the available scan command.
  3. Allow the scan to complete.
  4. Follow the security product’s recommendation.
  5. Do not add an exclusion merely to make the error disappear.

If the file repeatedly reappears after removal, disconnect the computer from sensitive networks if appropriate and perform a full security scan. Obtain a clean Kaspersky installer only after the system has been checked.

Fix 4: Remove a stale Kaspersky startup reference

Sometimes Kaspersky has already been removed, but Windows still tries to start an old helper or service that requests kltrace.dll.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for Kaspersky entries or unknown entries that appeared at the same time as the error.
  4. Right-click a clearly obsolete Kaspersky entry.
  5. Choose Disable.
  6. Restart Windows.

Do not disable random entries solely because their names are unfamiliar. If you need to identify an entry, right-click it and choose Open file location or Search online only through a trusted source.

Check installed applications again

If an old Kaspersky product remains in Installed apps, uninstall it through its official uninstaller. Restart afterward. Do not delete random registry entries based only on the filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the message appears at every startup but no Kaspersky installation remains, check Task Scheduler:

  1. Press Win+S.
  2. Search for Task Scheduler.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Review tasks that clearly reference an old Kaspersky installation.
  6. Open a task’s Actions tab before changing anything.
  7. Disable only a task whose path is clearly obsolete and related to the removed product.
  8. Restart Windows.

If you cannot identify the requesting executable, use the error’s full path and the startup entry’s action to determine which application is responsible.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate an application-owned Kaspersky DLL, so use them when several unrelated Windows files fail, Windows features are damaged, or the problem began after broader system corruption.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

  1. Press Win+S.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

Success means DISM or SFC reports that corruption was repaired, or that no integrity violations were found. If SFC reports files it could not repair, restart and run the commands again only if Windows itself is also malfunctioning. If the only remaining error is kltrace.dll, return to the Kaspersky repair or reinstall step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM can be frustrating when you do not know which Windows component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it identifies; its repair function requires the full version, and reinstalling the Kaspersky program remains the definitive fix for a Kaspersky-owned DLL.

Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates

Windows Update will not normally provide kltrace.dll, but updating is sensible when the issue appeared after an operating-system change or when multiple Windows components are failing.

  1. Press Win+I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Test the affected application.

If Windows Update reports an error, resolve that Windows Update problem separately. Do not expect an update to place this third-party DLL in System32.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help if the file disappeared immediately after an uninstall, cleanup operation, update, driver change, or system-image restoration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review which applications and drivers may be removed.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Confirm the restore.
  8. Let Windows restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal files intact. It may remove applications installed after the selected restore point.

After restoration, test Kaspersky. If the file is still missing, reinstall the related Kaspersky product rather than repeatedly restoring the system.

Fix 8: Consider drivers only when the evidence points there

kltrace.dll is not established as a Windows driver component. Do not begin with Device Manager unless the error appeared alongside a device failure, a graphics or security-device application problem, or a driver installation.

To check relevant devices:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing application.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the Driver tab and Events tab.
  7. Use Update driver only when Windows identifies a driver problem.
  8. If a recent update caused the issue, use Roll Back Driver when available.
  9. Restart Windows.

Do not replace a Kaspersky DLL with a driver file. If Device Manager shows no related error, return to repairing the Kaspersky installation.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean hunting through hardware versions and guessing which package is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installation through the full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the Kaspersky program that owns kltrace.dll.

Why regsvr32 usually will not help

Do not run this as a routine fix:

regsvr32 kltrace.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point named DllRegisterServer. A tracing or support library is normally loaded by its parent application and does not need COM registration.

You may receive an error such as:

The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

That message does not mean the file is missing. It means the DLL is not the type of component that regsvr32 can register. Reinstall the parent Kaspersky application instead.

Why Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not first-line fixes

Installing a runtime is appropriate when the error names a runtime file such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • VCRUNTIME140.dll
  • MSVCP140.dll
  • A DirectX component
  • A .NET component

It is not an established repair for kltrace.dll. Microsoft Visual C++ packages are separate files, including vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe.

Do not install several runtimes at random. Match the runtime to the actual missing filename and the application that requires it.

32-bit and 64-bit considerations

Do not move kltrace.dll between System32 and SysWOW64.

On 64-bit Windows, those folders have conventional architecture roles, but that does not make either one the correct location for this Kaspersky DLL. The required architecture is determined by the executable loading the file and by the original Kaspersky installer. No trustworthy public information establishes the architecture of every legacy kltrace.dll build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe approach is:

  1. Identify the parent executable.
  2. Identify the Kaspersky product and installer architecture.
  3. Repair or reinstall that product.
  4. Allow its installer to place the matching file.

Copying a file from another computer can produce a wrong-architecture, wrong-version, or dependency error.

What not to do

Avoid these common but unsafe shortcuts:

  • Do not download kltrace.dll from a random DLL website.
  • Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
  • Do not copy it from another computer.
  • Do not whitelist an unknown copy because the filename looks correct.
  • Do not run regsvr32 on every DLL.
  • Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without evidence that one of their files is missing.
  • Do not delete registry entries based only on the filename.
  • Do not repeatedly restore a quarantined file that security software detects again.

A standalone DLL may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, lack required dependencies, or belong to a different Kaspersky release. Even a clean replacement may not fix the damaged installation that requested it.

FAQ

Is kltrace.dll a Windows file?

No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with older Kaspersky antivirus software.

Is kltrace.dll a virus?

The filename alone cannot answer that. A copy in a genuine Kaspersky folder is more consistent with legitimate software, while a copy in a temporary or unrelated folder needs scanning and verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does it belong to Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal?

It is associated with an older Kaspersky product family, and public file information most strongly identifies Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Workstations. The exact relationship to every product called Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal is not confirmed by current official product documentation.

Should I download the missing file?

No. Reinstall the Kaspersky product from its official support or download channel. Do not use an untrusted DLL download site.

Will SFC restore it?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not arbitrary third-party application files. Use it when Windows itself appears corrupted, then reinstall Kaspersky if kltrace.dll remains missing.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

Usually not. A tracing library normally does not require COM registration. Repair or reinstall the parent Kaspersky application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error continues after reinstalling Kaspersky?

Identify the executable that is requesting the file. The message may come from an obsolete startup entry, scheduled task, wrapper, or suspicious program rather than the current Kaspersky installation. Check the file path, startup items, scheduled tasks, and security scan results.

What is the definitive repair?

Find the Kaspersky installation that owns the file and repair or reinstall that product using Kaspersky’s official support or installer channel. Restore from Quarantine only when the original path and file legitimacy are clear.
