Who is Gary Smith in Bully?
Gary is the central antagonist behind the game’s later conflict. In an October 2013 Game Narrative Review, student author Xavier Strong calls him the “final and overall antagonist” and describes his goal as ruling Bullworth’s students. That is a narrative analysis, not an official Rockstar character profile.

Rockstar’s Bully: Scholarship Edition store page gives the broad premise of Jimmy Hopkins navigating Bullworth Academy, but does not provide a detailed account of Gary. The game itself is the place to follow the character’s story.

Why does Gary betray Jimmy?
Gary and Jimmy initially work together. Strong’s review presents their eventual break as the turning point: Gary betrays Jimmy and arranges events that lead to Jimmy’s expulsion. The betrayal gives Gary a route to greater influence while leaving Jimmy to investigate what happened.
#1 Best Overall
- Great humor and voices bring the hilarious story to life
- Takes groundbreaking and original gameplay and humorous tongue-in-cheek storytelling to an entirely new setting: the schoolyard
- As a troublesome schoolboy, you'll stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers and play pranks on malicious kids
- You'll also win or lose the girl and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious reform school, Bullworth Academy
- At long last, stand up for the nerds, geeks, and unrepresented!
In the review’s account, Gary’s approach is less about confronting Jimmy directly than about recruiting other people and setting Bullworth’s cliques against one another. He uses the school’s divisions to advance his own position. That makes the betrayal part of a broader effort to control the student body, rather than an isolated disagreement between two boys.
Is Gary Smith a sociopath?
The available sources do not establish a clinical diagnosis for Gary. “Sociopathic” may be used as a critical or fan characterization, but it should not be stated as a medical fact. What the story analysis does support is a description of his observable behavior: he is manipulative, seeks control, and betrays a former ally.

- Bully Scholarship Edition Product Type Xbox 360
Strong’s review interprets those actions as part of Gary’s antagonist role; it is not a creator statement or official Rockstar explanation. No verified in-game quotation or attributable creator comment is established by these sources, so Gary’s characterization is best discussed through the plot actions the review describes.
Where can you revisit Gary’s story?
Rockstar lists Bully: Scholarship Edition on its official store, with Jimmy Hopkins and Bullworth Academy at the center of its premise. The listing covers the game’s identity and platform information; it is not a Gary character guide. Rockstar’s Bully support index is useful for game support, but does not substantiate character interpretations.
