The five-mission KnoWay Out strand casts the company’s driverless SUVs as part of a clandestine surveillance scheme in Los Santos. Rockstar has also documented a Freemode bug that made KnoWay taxis appear unexpectedly, but that does not establish that every strange taxi encounter is intentional chaos.
What is KnoWay Out in GTA Online?
KnoWay is an in-game autonomous-vehicle start-up, not a real robotaxi operator. Rockstar’s premise is that its fleet of driverless SUVs is being used to build a clandestine surveillance network in Los Santos. Avi Schwartzman recruits the player to help stop the scheme.

Rockstar’s official mission description says players can learn more about KnoWay by answering a public phone and completing a mission for Avi. A luxury property is not required to access the story missions. The description was surfaced on Rockstar’s Spanish-language page; this is an English paraphrase of that content. What was added, and when?
The TechCrunch headline called the DLC “upcoming” when it was published on December 5, 2025, ahead of the update’s scheduled December 10 release. That framing is now dated. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.72 notes document the released update, which added properties, missions, vehicles and a mission creator. What does “cause chaos” refer to?
The trailer’s depiction
TechCrunch described the trailer as showing sensor-equipped vans swerving, wrecking cars and crashing into a billboard. It said the footage did not make clear whether people had hijacked the vehicles or whether they had gone rogue. Rockstar’s promotional description, as quoted by TechCrunch, said players would “stop the development of a mass surveillance network in an all-new action-packed adventure.” That is promotional framing for the fictional plot, not evidence about real autonomous vehicles.
A separate, documented Freemode issue
Rockstar’s October 1, 2026 Title Update 1.73 notes say the company fixed an issue that caused KnoWay taxis to appear unexpectedly in Freemode. This confirms an unintended-spawn problem was recorded and addressed; it does not show that every apparent collision or erratic taxi is a designed game feature. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.73 notes

How has Rockstar maintained the missions?
The Title Update 1.72 notes also record a January 2026 fix for a progression problem in “KnoWay Out – Tunnel Vision.” Under the affected condition, a train could start before a hack was complete and leave a player unable to move. The fix is evidence that the released mission content received follow-up maintenance; it does not change the fictional premise of the story.

TechCrunch connected the game’s surveillance theme to public debate about autonomous vehicles and reported that Waymo declined to comment. The article also quoted Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana saying the company was “very focused on working with law enforcement to make sure that we pursue the people who are committing these crimes against our fleet.” That statement is attributed here to Mawakana as quoted by TechCrunch; it is not a claim that KnoWay exists or that the game’s events happened in the real world.
