OD is a horror-focused project from Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios that Hideo Kojima says will test players’ fear and blur the line between games and film. A 2025 teaser showed a first-person scene starring Sophia Lillis, but neither the full gameplay nor a release date has been revealed.
What is Kojima’s OD?
OD is an announced Kojima Productions project being made with Xbox Game Studios. Kojima Productions introduced it at The Game Awards on December 7, 2023, describing it as an attempt to explore “testing your fear threshold” and “what it means to OD on fear” while blurring gaming and film. Kojima Productions’ announcement called it a new kind of game—or “a new form of media.”
The announcement establishes a horror-facing concept, not a detailed plot or gameplay description. It did not explain what players do moment to moment, how fear is measured, or how the film-like elements work.
What did the OD trailers show?
The 2023 announcement teaser
The first public look introduced the title, its collaborators and performers, and its broad fear-centered premise. It named Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier as lead performers, and filmmaker Jordan Peele as one of several storytellers involved. The teaser and announcement did not establish a release date or reveal a gameplay loop.

The 2025 “Knock” teaser
At Kojima Productions’ tenth-anniversary Beyond The Strand event in September 2025, the studio showed an OD: Knock teaser. TechRadar’s report on the footage describes a first-person scene in which Lillis’s character enters a room, lights candles, and reacts to threatening sounds and an unseen presence. That is what the teaser depicts; it does not confirm that the full game uses a first-person perspective throughout or that this scene represents its complete gameplay system.
TechRadar also reported that OD is being developed in Unreal Engine 5. Kojima characterized the project’s system and infrastructure as experimental, saying he was repeating tests and experiments. Xbox gaming CEO Phil Spencer said development was well underway and that Xbox was supporting production with technical work on Unreal and behind-the-scenes work. Those comments describe development at the September 2025 event; they are not a release forecast.

Why is Xbox involved, and is OD an Xbox exclusive?
The Xbox relationship was announced before the game’s title. In June 2022, Microsoft said Xbox Game Studios and Kojima Productions would create a game using cloud technology. Xbox Wire’s partnership announcement framed it as a project made possible by Microsoft’s cloud capabilities. The 2023 OD announcement again cited Xbox Game Studios’ cloud gaming technology.
That confirms an Xbox partnership and a stated role for cloud technology, but it does not establish a final list of supported devices or platforms. The public material covered here does not confirm whether OD will be exclusive to Xbox, how cloud features will work, or whether it will be included with Game Pass. A partnership announcement alone is not confirmation of service inclusion.

Is OD connected to Jordan Peele?
Yes. Kojima Productions named Jordan Peele as one of several storytellers involved in OD and identified Lillis, Schafer, and Kier as lead performers. The announcement does not spell out Peele’s precise role or describe how the storytellers’ contributions are divided, so it is more accurate to call him a collaborator than to assign him a specific writing or directing credit.

No release date or launch window is established in the available reporting. TechRadar noted the absence of a date in September 2025; a later GamesRadar+ report on Kojima’s Koji10 radio comments described filming and game development as ongoing, without supplying a launch timeframe.

Kojima said he wanted to reveal less than usual and that a lack of updates did not mean the game was not being made. The latest public status in that report is continued production, not a timetable. Supported devices, retail editions, and any OD-specific physical merchandise are likewise not confirmed in these reports.
