“The program can’t start because ksapi.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
ksapi.dll is an application DLL associated with the Kingsoft KSAPI Module, not a normal Windows system file. The safest repair is to identify the program that installed ksapi.dll, then repair or reinstall that program rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The filename alone cannot prove which product owns a copy. The exact application, version, installation path, architecture, and authenticity must be checked on the affected computer.
Do not confuse ksapi.dll with ksapi64.dll. They are different filenames, and a 32-bit application cannot be repaired by copying a 64-bit file into its folder. Public file records describe some 32-bit builds of ksapi.dll, but those records are incomplete and should not be treated as an official version catalogue.
Identify the program requesting the file
Before changing Windows, find the application that produces the error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the missing-file message. It may identify the executable or product. If the message appears during startup, note whether it happens after signing in, launching a shortcut, opening a document, or starting a game.
If the error names an old Kingsoft security product that you no longer use, the correct solution may be removing the obsolete startup reference rather than restoring the DLL.
Check the installed applications list
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Kingsoft, Kingsoft Antivirus, Kingsoft Internet Security, Clean Master, or the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair or Reset, if those controls are provided.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the application only after confirming that you have its installer or a supported reinstall method. Restart Windows, then reinstall the same product from its original installer or the developer’s official support channel.
Inspect the file and its owner
If a copy of the file remains on the drive:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
ksapi.dll. - Right-click a result and select Properties.
- Review the Details tab.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- On the General tab, record the complete folder path.
A path inside a Kingsoft-related application directory is more useful than an isolated copy in a temporary folder, Downloads, or an unfamiliar system directory. Do not assume a file is genuine just because its name is correct.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution for ksapi.dll.
Try the application’s repair option
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options, where available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s settings or stored data.
Reinstall the application
If repair is unavailable or unsuccessful:
- Close the affected application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the application again using its original installer or an official vendor-provided installer.
- Restart once more.
- Test the application before restoring extra plugins or security exclusions.
The installer should place the correct DLL beside the program that needs it. Do not copy ksapi.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
If the application has been discontinued, remove the orphaned startup item instead of trying to keep an unsupported component alive.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove a DLL after detecting corruption, unwanted behavior, or a modified file. Do not immediately restore it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that mentions
ksapi.dll. - Check the detected path, threat name, date, and action taken.
- Compare the path with the known installation folder of the affected application.
Restore or allow the file only when the application is known, the installation path is expected, and the file can be verified as genuine. Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the computer.
If the detection is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source. Then run:
- Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
A file that repeatedly disappears after reinstalling needs investigation, not repeated manual copying.
Fix 3: Remove a stale startup reference
A leftover shortcut can request ksapi.dll after its original program has been removed.

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries mentioning Kingsoft, security software, cleanup software, or an unknown executable associated with the error.
- Right-click a confirmed obsolete entry.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
You can also check Settings > Apps > Startup and disable a confirmed leftover entry there.
Do not disable or delete an unknown item solely because its name looks suspicious. First use Open file location, when available, and check which application owns it.
If the message appears from a scheduled task:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks associated with the removed application.
- Check the Actions tab before changing anything.
- Disable only a task that clearly belongs to software you have removed.
Fix 4: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit program generally needs its 32-bit application files, while a 64-bit program needs the matching 64-bit components. ksapi.dll and ksapi64.dll are not interchangeable.
If the error says “The specified module could not be found,” the named DLL may exist while another dependency is missing. Reinstalling the owning application is still the correct first repair because its installer restores the complete set of matching files.

Do not infer a Visual C++ problem from ksapi.dll alone. Install or repair Microsoft Visual C++ only when the error also names a runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll, or when the application’s installer explicitly requires it. Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads, and match the package architecture to the application.
DirectX, Windows Update, and Visual C++ are not established general fixes for a missing Kingsoft module.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when the failure began after system corruption, an interrupted update, or broader Windows file problems. These commands repair protected Windows components; they do not replace a third-party Kingsoft DLL.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft documents the DISM and SFC repair sequence. If SFC reports that it found and repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the application reinstall rather than placing a downloaded DLL in a Windows folder.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious when you are also hunting damaged application files. Outbyte PC Repair can scan to show what it identifies as wrong; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the Kingsoft application remains the definitive fix when that program owns ksapi.dll.
Fix 6: Update the application and relevant drivers
If the application opens far enough to show an update option, install its latest supported update from within the program or its official installer. Do not replace one DLL from a different release.
Drivers are not the usual cause of a missing ksapi.dll, but update-related crashes, graphics problems, or damaged device software can complicate application startup. Check them only after repairing the application:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a recently updated device, open Properties > Driver and use Roll Back Driver when that button is available and the timing clearly matches the failure.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware identifiers, vendor packages, and architecture repeatedly. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan to identify outdated drivers; driver installation is completed by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns ksapi.dll.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 ksapi.dll
unless the application’s documentation specifically instructs you to register that file. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary application-support DLL may not provide one, producing an error that the entry point was not found.
Microsoft’s DLL registration guidance describes registration as an application-specific operation, not a universal missing-DLL repair.
Use System Restore for a recent system change
If ksapi.dll stopped working immediately after an installation, update, or driver change, System Restore may undo that change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can remove recently installed programs, drivers, and updates. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore instructions.
Avoid loose DLL downloads
Do not download ksapi.dll from a random DLL archive and copy it into a Windows directory. That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, mismatch the application’s build, or leave the actual damaged installation untouched.
The safe sources are:
- The original application’s repair function
- The application’s official installer
- The application vendor’s official support channel
- Microsoft’s official runtime packages when the error specifically names a Microsoft runtime
Prevent the error from returning
- Keep the owning application updated through its official installer.
- Do not use registry cleaners or automatic DLL-fix utilities to replace application files.
- Review antivirus quarantine before restoring removed files.
- Remove obsolete startup entries after uninstalling security or cleanup software.
- Keep a copy of the application’s legitimate installer before removing an older release.
- Avoid mixing files from different application versions or architectures.
FAQ
Is ksapi.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Kingsoft software and should not normally be present as a Windows system component.
Can I download ksapi.dll by itself?
That is not the recommended repair. Reinstall the application that needs it so the correct file and its dependencies are installed together.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix ksapi.dll?
Not normally. Use it only when the error also identifies a Microsoft runtime or the application installer requires it.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The correct location is normally the directory of the application that installed the file.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling Kingsoft software?
The software may have been removed while a startup shortcut or scheduled task remained. Disable the confirmed orphaned entry instead of restoring the DLL.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
Another dependency may be missing, or the file may be damaged, incompatible, or blocked. Check the complete error, verify the file’s path and signature, then reinstall the owning application.
