One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchobjsel.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system component, and an objsel.dll missing or not found message usually points to damaged or missing Windows files. It is the Object Picker Dialog DLL used by Windows applications and administrative tools to select users, computers, groups, and other directory objects through the Directory Object Picker API.
The safest repair is not to download the DLL. Install pending Windows updates, then repair the Windows component store with DISM and protected system files with SFC.

What objsel.dll is and where it belongs
Microsoft documents Objsel.dll as the DLL required by the Directory Object Picker API. It is part of Windows, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, .NET runtime, game middleware package, or standalone third-party program.

%SystemRoot%SysWOW64 |
32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows |
| Microsoft digital signature | Evidence that the file came from Microsoft |
| Application folder, Downloads, Temp, or Startup folder | A copy that deserves investigation |
The exact path, version, architecture, and presence of the file depend on the Windows release and servicing state. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may use the 32-bit system directory while a 64-bit application uses the native system directory.
Windows also searches standard system directories when loading DLLs. A copy placed beside an application can therefore change which file Windows loads. That is one reason manually copying a DLL into a program folder can make the problem worse. See Microsoft’s DLL search-order documentation and DLL security guidance.
What the error message really tells you
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because objsel.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because objsel.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting objsel.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “objsel.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording does not prove that objsel.dll itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The “not designed to run on Windows” wording is a generic Bad Image message. It can indicate corruption, an incompatible architecture, an invalid replacement, or an incorrectly loaded file. It does not automatically mean that the DLL is malware.
If several unrelated programs produce the error, suspect Windows system corruption rather than one broken application. If only one program reports it, that program may be loading an incompatible private copy or triggering a Windows API failure.
Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
A failed or interrupted update can leave protected Windows components incomplete.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Open the affected application again.
If the error disappears, the missing or damaged component was likely repaired during servicing. If it remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Microsoft’s current update procedure is described in its Windows Update installation guidance.
Fix 2: Run DISM, then SFC
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of objsel.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store first. SFC then uses that repaired store to check and replace protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
A successful DISM operation means the component store was repaired or verified. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corruption that it could not repair.
If SFC repaired files, restart before testing. If SFC could not repair everything, run DISM once more, restart, and run SFC again. Repeatedly running the same commands without checking the result is not useful; record the message and move to the next repair option if the problem persists.
If you prefer help identifying which Windows components need attention while you work through these repairs, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan and show what it finds; repair is handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for DISM or SFC.
These commands come from Microsoft’s System File Checker repair instructions.
If DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Do not use an arbitrary folder or a DLL copied from another computer.
Fix 3: Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations, Windows Update can reinstall the current version without removing your apps, personal files, or settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and leave the computer connected to power.
- Restart if requested, then test the application.
This is useful when DISM and SFC do not restore several Windows components or Windows servicing itself is damaged. The option may not appear on every installation. Microsoft explains the process in its repair-reinstall instructions.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a genuine system file after a false detection. Do not restore a file merely because its name is objsel.dll.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection involving
objsel.dll. - Check its original path and detection details.
- Restore it only if the path is a normal Windows system directory and the detection is demonstrably false.
- Run DISM followed by SFC after restoring it.
- Run a full malware scan if the path is unusual or the detection is not clearly a false positive.
If the file was found in Downloads, Temp, an application directory, or an unusual startup location, do not restore it automatically. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the Restore and Allow on device actions.

A file with the right name is not necessarily the right file.
To inspect the normal system locations:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
%SystemRoot%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
objsel.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Check that the signer is Microsoft and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
On 64-bit Windows, repeat the check with:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
Do not assume that a file in both locations is duplicated by mistake. One may be the native copy and the other the 32-bit system copy. Conversely, do not replace one architecture with the other. A 32-bit DLL is not a substitute for a 64-bit DLL, and a file from another Windows build can trigger a Bad Image error.

The error may also come from a private copy beside the application. If the system copies are valid but one application still fails, use Process Monitor or the application’s diagnostic logs to identify which path it loaded. Remove or repair the application’s private copy only when you know which program owns it.
Fix 6: Repair the affected application only when one program fails
objsel.dll is a Windows component, so reinstalling an application is not the first repair. However, one application may have a damaged installation, an incompatible bundled file, or a launcher that is loading the wrong path.
Use the application’s official repair process:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming what application data it may remove.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the newest version from the developer’s official installer.
For a game, use its launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent function for the game’s own files. That does not restore the Windows copy of objsel.dll.
If the error affects only one application, this branch becomes more important. If it affects several unrelated programs, return to DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and Windows recovery instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Check drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics, storage, chipset, or other driver is not established as the owner of objsel.dll. Update drivers only if Device Manager shows a warning, the application names a driver file, or the failure began after a driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Check Device status on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver when appropriate.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not install unrelated graphics or chipset packages simply because a DLL error appears. If you are manually checking a large number of devices and driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing what it identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional.

Windows Features and regsvr32
There is no verified Windows optional feature that needs to be enabled specifically to restore objsel.dll.
You can still check Windows Features when another error names a missing framework or component:
- Open Start.
- Search for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open it.
- Change a feature only when the application or error specifically identifies that feature.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random features as a DLL repair method.
regsvr32 is also not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry point. Microsoft does not require regsvr32 objsel.dll for this error, and running it will not restore a missing or corrupted protected system file. See Microsoft’s regsvr32 command reference.
What not to do
Do not download objsel.dll from a random DLL-sharing website. The file may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or fail to repair the damaged component that caused the message.
Do not copy a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. Do not overwrite a Windows file with one from another computer. Do not treat a third-party file listing as proof that the file is safe.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or a matching trusted Windows installation source instead. Manual copying is appropriate only in a controlled repair performed with a verified matching source and expert validation.
If the error remains
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the error continues:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Record the exact executable that produces the message.
- Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs and Application for the failing module or path.
- Check whether the application has bundled its own
objsel.dll. - Test the program after repairing or reinstalling it.
- Run a full malware scan if the file is outside a Windows system directory.
- Back up important data.
- Use System Restore or Windows recovery if the failure began after a recent change.
To use System Restore:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Confirm the restore and restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files but changes system files, settings, and installed programs. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guide. For broader component damage, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
FAQ
Is objsel.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. Microsoft documents it as a Windows Object Picker Dialog component used by the Directory Object Picker API. Reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET only when another named file or the application’s developer specifically points to that runtime.
Is objsel.dll safe?
A genuine Microsoft copy in a Windows system directory should be legitimate. Location, digital signature, and scan results matter more than the filename alone. A copy in Downloads, Temp, or an application folder deserves investigation.
Why does the message say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be damaged, or Windows may be loading a wrong-architecture or incompatible private copy. The message does not prove that objsel.dll itself is absent.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I register objsel.dll with regsvr32?
No. regsvr32 is not a general Windows DLL repair tool, and there is no Microsoft instruction requiring it for objsel.dll.
Can I fix the problem by reinstalling the game?
Only if the error occurs exclusively in that game and its installation is damaged. Reinstalling the game does not replace a missing Windows system component. Repair Windows first when multiple applications are affected.
What is the correct fix for a Bad Image error?
Run Windows Update, then DISM and SFC. Also check the file’s signature, architecture, and loading path. Replace neither the system DLL nor its dependencies with a download from an unofficial source.
