Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing anything:
- The error appeared after a Kyocera driver update, uninstall, or Windows update: reinstall the correct Kyocera scanner driver.
- Scanning stopped after antivirus detected a file: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The printer still prints but cannot scan: confirm that the WIA or TWAIN scanner package is installed, not only the print driver.
- The error appears during startup but you no longer own the Kyocera device: remove the obsolete Kyocera software instead of replacing the DLL.
- Several Windows components also report errors: run DISM and SFC after repairing the Kyocera installation.

The safest first repair is the official, model-specific Kyocera scanner driver. Do not begin by downloading kywdds10.dll from a DLL catalogue.

What is kywdds10.dll
kywdds10.dll is publicly identified as part of the Kyocera WIA Driver. WIA means Windows Image Acquisition, the Microsoft framework that allows Windows and applications to communicate with scanners. The Kyocera package supplies the device-specific driver component.
It is not normally a Microsoft system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, game file, or general-purpose Windows library. The exact Kyocera model cannot be determined from the filename alone. A compatible multifunction printer or scanner may install it as part of a model-specific package.

Public file listings commonly associate the file with a 32-bit Kyocera WIA component and report version 1.0.9.19, with a size of approximately 0.1 MB. These listings are not an authoritative Kyocera inventory, and public databases disagree about architecture. Verify the copy installed on your computer instead of assuming every copy has the same bitness.
To inspect an existing copy:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search for
kywdds10.dll. - Right-click the result and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the product description, version, and other available information.
- On the General tab, note the full path.
The file may be inside a Windows DriverStore repository rather than beside a normal application. Do not treat its location as proof that the file is safe or that it can be copied independently.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Kyocera scanner driver
This is the most likely solution.
Identify the exact device
Find the model name on the printer or scanner label. You can also check:

- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Kyocera device.
- Record the complete model name.
A print driver alone may not provide scanning. You need the model-specific Kyocera package identified as a scanner driver, WIA driver, TWAIN driver, USB scanner package, or a combination of those names.
Remove the damaged package
If the Kyocera installer provides its own uninstall option, use that first. Otherwise:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Kyocera.
- Remove the Kyocera scanner utility or scanner driver listed there.
- Restart Windows.
If the old driver remains:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers.
- Right-click the Kyocera scanner.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device if that option appears.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated printer entries unless you know they belong to the same failed package.

Download and install the replacement
Use Kyocera Document Solutions’ official Download & Support Portal. Select the exact product model and your Windows version. Download the scanner package labelled TWAIN, USB, WIA, or equivalent. Package names and versions vary by model and region, so there is no universal Kyocera installer for this DLL.
Then:
- Disconnect the USB scanner or multifunction printer if the installer requests it.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installer’s removal or setup instructions.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Reconnect the device, or add the network scanner again.
- Test with Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, Paint, or the Kyocera scanning application.
The repair worked if the application opens without the DLL message and produces a scan. If printing works but scanning does not, reinstall the scanner package rather than reinstalling only the printer driver.
Manually comparing dozens of Kyocera packages and Windows driver versions can be tedious, especially when the model name is similar to another device. Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus product may have removed or quarantined a legitimate driver component. Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any detection related to Kyocera,
kywdds10.dll, or the scanner installation. - Read the detected path and threat details.
- If the file came from a trusted, signed Kyocera installer and the detection is demonstrably false, use Restore or Allow on device only according to your organization’s security policy.
- If the source is uncertain, leave it quarantined.
- Download a fresh installer from Kyocera and scan it before installation.
Reinstalling from the official package is safer than restoring an old quarantined copy. If Protection history shows a real malware detection, investigate the entire installation rather than whitelisting one DLL.
Fix 3: Check for a wrong model or architecture
A driver can be present but still fail if it belongs to another Kyocera model, connection type, or Windows architecture.
Check these items:
- The exact Kyocera model matches the selected download.
- The package supports Windows 10 or Windows 11 as appropriate.
- The package is intended for scanning, not printing only.
- The USB package is not being used for a network scanner, or vice versa.
- A 32-bit application is not being forced to load an incompatible component.
- You did not mix an old WIA or USB package with a newer network scanner package unless Kyocera documents that combination.
To inspect the installed device:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the scanner or imaging category.
- Right-click the Kyocera device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Driver Details if available.
If the device is network-connected, confirm that it has the expected IP address and that Windows can reach it. A network scanner may require a network-capable WIA or TWAIN package even when the print queue works correctly.

Fix 4: Repair the Kyocera application
If the driver is installed but the Kyocera scanning utility still reports the DLL error:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the Kyocera application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Restart the application and test scanning.
If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the Kyocera utility, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the official Kyocera package. The utility and the WIA/TWAIN driver may be separate components, so reinstalling only the utility may not restore scanning.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
kywdds10.dll is a third-party driver component, so Windows repair commands may not replace it. They are useful when the DLL error appeared with broader system corruption or other damaged Windows files.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Kyocera scanner again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. If both commands complete successfully but the Kyocera error remains, return to the model-specific driver reinstall rather than repeating the commands.
Repeatedly hunting through repair commands without knowing which Windows components changed is inefficient. Fix 6: Check Windows Update and optional drivers
Windows may offer a compatible scanner driver, although the full Kyocera package is preferable when available.

- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a Kyocera or scanner update only if it clearly matches your device.
- Restart Windows.
Do not install a generic scanner driver merely because its name is similar. A generic driver may restore basic detection but not the Kyocera scanning features you use.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
If scanning worked immediately before a driver installation, Windows update, or cleanup operation, System Restore may return the previous driver state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove a recently installed driver or application. Afterward, install the correct Kyocera package rather than relying on an obsolete restored driver.
Why downloading the DLL is a poor fix
Do not download kywdds10.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. An arbitrary copy may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another Kyocera package, or require dependencies that are still missing.

Manual DLL replacement is appropriate only in controlled enterprise or forensic recovery using a verified file extracted from the original Kyocera installer.
Why regsvr32 is usually not the answer
Do not run regsvr32 kywdds10.dll as a routine repair. WIA components are normally installed through a driver package and INF registration, and many DLLs do not export the DllRegisterServer function required by regsvr32.
If you try it and receive an error about a missing entry point or registration failure, that does not prove the DLL is corrupt. Reinstall the Kyocera driver instead. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL is self-registering.

If you no longer use the Kyocera device
A startup error may come from an obsolete Kyocera utility attempting to load after the scanner was removed.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and Installed apps.
- Uninstall unused Kyocera scanner software.
- Open Device Manager.
- Remove the obsolete Kyocera scanner device and driver if it remains.
- Restart Windows.
Removing an unused driver is safer than restoring a DLL for hardware you no longer own.

There is no verified basis to call the file malware solely by name. Check its location, digital signature, installer source, and Windows Security detection details. A fresh Kyocera installer is safer than restoring an unknown copy.
What does “The specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that kywdds10.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. If reinstalling the complete driver does not help, inspect the full error path and Event Viewer.
