The smallest working entry is usually "STEAM_x:x:xxxxxxxx" "99:z" in left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini. The z flag gives SourceMod root access, so use narrower flags whenever full control is not necessary.

What you need before adding an admin
This procedure applies to a dedicated L4D2 server that you operate or are authorized to moderate. You need access to the server files or its server console, plus MetaMod and SourceMod installed in the game directory. SourceMod supplies the admin identity and permission system; MetaMod loads SourceMod and other server plugins.

- Server access: file-transfer access to the dedicated server, or a control panel that lets you edit configuration files.
- Console access: the in-game developer console, a dedicated-server console, or a remote console connection.
- Your SteamID: the Steam authentication string displayed by the
statuscommand. - SourceMod files: the installation must be complete enough for the
configsdirectory and base admin plugins to load. - A maintenance window: changing an admin file normally requires a server restart or an admin reload before the change is recognized.
Do not grant root or RCON access to people you would not trust with every server function. These permissions affect the entire server, not just your own client.
Step 1: Find the SteamID that SourceMod will use
Join the server with the account you want to authorize and run:

statusYou can enter status in the game console while connected, or in the dedicated-server console. The output lists connected players and their SteamIDs. Copy the complete SteamID exactly as displayed, including the STEAM_ prefix and both numeric components. Do not substitute a display name: names can change and may not uniquely identify an account.
Check the identity before saving it
- Copy the SteamID from the line belonging to your current player.
- Keep the capitalization and punctuation unchanged.
- Make sure you are editing the configuration for the same server instance you joined; a host can have separate installations or game directories.
- If the account is shown as a bot or does not have a Steam authentication value, reconnect with the intended Steam account and run
statusagain.
Step 2: Add yourself in admins_simple.ini
The quickest SourceMod method is the simple admin file. On the server, open:
left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.iniAdd one line using this form:
"STEAM_x:x:xxxxxxxx" "99:z"Replace the first quoted value with the SteamID copied from status. The second quoted value contains the immunity level and permission flags. In this example, 99 is a high immunity value and z is SourceMod root access.
Example entry
"STEAM_1:0:123456789" "99:z"Use one entry per account. Keep the quotation marks, place each account on its own line, and do not add comments or extra characters inside the SteamID. Save the file in plain text with the original filename. A common mistake is editing a similarly named file in a local game installation rather than the dedicated server’s left4dead2 directory.
Use less than root when possible
Replace z with a combination of narrower flags if the person only needs routine moderation. For example, a kick-and-ban moderator could receive the flags for those actions without access to server cvars, RCON, or cheat commands. The exact flags are listed below.
Step 3: Use admins.cfg when you need named accounts or detailed settings

}Change the label, SteamID, flags, and immunity to match the account. The auth value tells SourceMod to authenticate by SteamID; identity is the exact ID returned by status. The flags value can contain several letters, such as cdg, when one person needs kick, ban, and changemap permissions but not root access.

Do not maintain the same person with conflicting permissions in both files unless you understand how SourceMod will merge the entries. Keeping one authoritative entry per account makes later changes easier to audit.
Step 4: Apply the change
After saving either file, restart the dedicated server or reload SourceMod’s admin data. A restart is the most reliable option because it also confirms that the server is reading the expected installation. If you reload without restarting, use the admin-reload command provided by your SourceMod installation and watch the server console for parsing errors.
- Save the file on the server, not only on your local computer.
- Confirm that the path is under the active
left4dead2game directory. - Restart the server, or run the available SourceMod admin reload command from the server console.
- Reconnect to the server with the authorized Steam account.
- Run
sm_adminto verify that the SourceMod admin menu opens.
If the menu does not open, do not immediately add more flags. First verify the SteamID, file path, syntax, and reload state. Granting root to a misspelled identity does not fix authentication.

If commands such as sm_admin are unknown, SourceMod is not loaded or its base command plugin is unavailable. A dedicated L4D2 server needs MetaMod and SourceMod installed in the game’s server directory before the admin files can work.
- Install MetaMod in the L4D2 server installation according to its package layout.
- Install SourceMod beneath the same game installation so the server has an
addons/sourcemoddirectory. - Confirm that the SourceMod configuration directory contains
admins_simple.iniand, when using the structured format,admins.cfg. - Restart the server after installation so MetaMod can load SourceMod at startup.
- Test a SourceMod command such as
sm_adminfrom an authorized account.
SourceMod’s base command set includes sm_kick, sm_map, sm_rcon, and sm_cvar. The sm_admin command opens the graphical admin menu when the account has permission and the menu plugin is loaded.

SourceMod flags explained
SourceMod maps administrative abilities to single-letter flags. Assign only what an account needs. The z flag is special: SourceMod describes root as a “magic access flag” that grants all permissions by default.

For example, "flags" "cd" gives kick and ban capability, while "flags" "g" gives changemap access. The right combination depends on the job; do not use z merely because it is convenient.
Core L4D2 admin commands
These commands are supplied by SourceMod’s base command plugins. Enter them in the server console or through an admin console where you have the required flag.

Command availability can still depend on whether the corresponding SourceMod plugin is loaded. If a command is reported as unknown, check the installation and startup logs before changing permissions.
Using RCON instead of SourceMod administration
RCON is a separate administration path. It does not require creating a SourceMod admin account for every operator, but it grants console-level control rather than a carefully limited set of SourceMod commands.

rcon_password "replace-with-a-long-random-secret"Apply the configuration by restarting the server or executing the configuration through your hosting control panel. Never post the password in a public chat, commit it to a shared repository, or reuse it for another service.
Connect from an RCON client
Use a Source-compatible RCON client and provide the server address, port, and the exact rcon_password. RCON lets an authorized operator issue console commands remotely, including commands that are not exposed through a limited SourceMod role.
Use SourceMod’s RCON bridge
An account with the m flag can use sm_rcon from SourceMod rather than connecting with a separate RCON client. This can be useful for an established admin team, but it still deserves the same trust level as direct RCON because the resulting control is broad.

Many server owners use SourceMod for routine moderation and keep RCON as an emergency or owner-only channel. That arrangement limits the damage from a compromised moderator account without removing remote recovery options.

Why sv_cheats keeps turning off
sv_cheats is not a private switch for one administrator. When enabled, it allows every connected client to use cheat commands. SourceMod identifies the cheats capability as the permission to change sv_cheats and use its commands, which is why that ability should not be included in ordinary moderator roles.
Server context also matters. Lobby reservation can reset the setting, and lobby-created local sessions disable cheats. For reliable testing, use a private dedicated server that you control rather than a lobby-created local game.

A safe testing sequence
- Move testing to a private server and tell any connected players that cheat commands affect everyone.
- Give the tester the cheats capability only for the test period, or use an owner-controlled RCON connection.
- Change
sv_cheatsand run the intended command. - If it reverts, check whether a lobby reservation or server configuration is resetting it.
- Remove the cheats permission after testing and restart the normal public configuration if necessary.
Do not use cheat access as a substitute for ordinary moderation flags. A person who only needs to kick or ban should not receive permission to change server-wide cheat behavior.
Troubleshooting: admin commands do not work
The server says the command is unknown
- Confirm MetaMod and SourceMod are installed in the active dedicated-server game directory.
- Restart the server after installation or plugin changes.
- Check startup output for SourceMod loading errors.
- Verify that the base command plugin is present and loaded;
sm_admin,sm_kick,sm_map,sm_rcon, andsm_cvarcome from SourceMod’s base command set.
Your SteamID entry is ignored
- Run
statusagain and compare every character with the file. - Make sure the entry is in
left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.inior the intendedadmins.cfg, not in a client-side folder. - Check that quotation marks, braces, and line breaks match the examples.
- Reload the admin data or restart the server after saving.
- Reconnect after the reload; an existing connection may not reflect a newly loaded identity until authentication is evaluated again.
The menu opens but an action is unavailable
The account is recognized, but its flags may not include the command’s access level. Add only the missing capability—for example, c for kick or g for changemap—instead of switching to root. If the action still does not appear, verify that the related SourceMod plugin is loaded.
Another admin can override you
SourceMod uses immunity values to help determine which admins can target others. Review the immunity values in the account entries and keep high values for the people who must be protected from lower-level actions. Do not solve an unclear hierarchy by giving every account z.
RCON refuses the connection
- Check that the client is using the server’s current address and port.
- Confirm that
rcon_passwordwas saved in the active dedicated-server configuration and applied after editing. - Enter the password exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
- If the password was exposed, replace it and restart the server rather than continuing to use it.
Security practices for a public L4D2 server
- Use least privilege: assign kick, ban, map, cvar, RCON, and cheats flags separately according to the job.
- Protect root: reserve
zfor the owner or a very small group of fully trusted operators. - Protect RCON: use a long unique password and do not distribute it when a limited SourceMod role will do.
- Separate testing from production: test
sv_cheatson a private server because every connected client is affected. - Back up configuration: keep a known-good copy of
admins_simple.ini,admins.cfg, and the server configuration before making changes. - Review access regularly: remove SteamIDs for former staff and lower flags when an operator’s responsibilities change.
- Warn before disruptive actions: map changes, kicks, bans, and cvar changes affect other players and can end a public session.
A practical permission plan
Owner
The owner may use a structured admins.cfg entry with root access, a high immunity value, and a separate protected RCON credential. Keep this account limited to people who can safely change any server setting.
Moderator
A moderator who handles player behavior normally needs kick and ban permissions, represented by the corresponding c and d flags. Add changemap only if that person is responsible for campaign rotation.
Event or test operator
An event operator may need changemap and selected cvar access. Add the cheats capability only for a scheduled private test, then remove it when the event ends. Avoid giving this role RCON unless the operator must perform console-level recovery.

Remote owner
An owner who is frequently away from the server can keep RCON for emergencies while using SourceMod flags for day-to-day moderation. This preserves a remote recovery path without handing the RCON password to the entire staff.
When managed L4D2 server hosting makes sense
If maintaining MetaMod, SourceMod, file permissions, restarts, and RCON access is more work than you want, managed L4D2 server hosting can provide a control panel and restart workflow. Before choosing a host, verify that its L4D2 package permits MetaMod and SourceMod, gives you access to admins_simple.ini or admins.cfg, and exposes the server console or an equivalent RCON configuration. A host that hides the game directory or blocks plugin loading may prevent this admin procedure even if it advertises L4D2 support.
