How to Set Up BattlEye Filters on an Arma 3 Server

A practical, mission-specific guide to Arma 3 BattlEye filters: enable BattlEye, find the active profile directory, write safe rules, tune from logs, secure RCon and troubleshoot restrictions.

To set up BattlEye filters on an Arma 3 dedicated server, enable BattlEye, put mission-specific plain-text filter files in the active profile’s BattlEye directory, start with logging rules, and tighten only strings confirmed in your logs. Configure RCon separately, protect its password and port, then reload or restart using the method supported by your server. The right filter set depends on the mission and mods running; there is no universal rule pack or threshold that is safe for every server.

What BattlEye filters do

BattlEye filters inspect script and command activity associated with an Arma 3 server. A matching line can be logged, trigger a restriction, or take another documented action, depending on the action number at the start of the rule. Filters are not a replacement for Arma’s own remote-execution policy: they are a second layer that must agree with the mission, mod set and server configuration.

Bohemia Interactive’s Arma 3 server guidance makes the central operational point clear: filters must be written specifically for each mission and mod because their scripting differs. A file copied from another community may contain assumptions about class names, remote calls or event handlers that do not exist on your server, and it can also block legitimate behavior after an update.

Where the files belong

The active BattlEye directory

Arma 3 normally creates a BattlEye directory inside the server’s profile directory. That is the working directory BattlEye uses for filter files, logs and BattlEye server settings. The actual path depends on how the server is launched: a custom profile directory or startup parameter can move it. If you administer a hosted server, ask for the active profile path rather than assuming it is next to the game executable.

When filters appear to do nothing, verify the profile and startup parameters first. A correctly formatted file in an inactive profile is indistinguishable from a missing filter during testing.

Enable BattlEye before testing

Set BattlEye = 1 in the Arma 3 server configuration. The server must be running with BattlEye enabled for the filter directory and its checks to have an effect. Restart or use the host’s documented configuration-apply process after changing this setting, then confirm that BattlEye logs are being produced in the active profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up before changing a rule

Copy the complete BattlEye directory and the relevant profile configuration before editing anything. Give the backup a date and keep at least the previous known-good version. A filter change can remove access for every player in a mission, and a mod update can make a previously harmless pattern match legitimate traffic. A rollback is faster and safer than trying to reconstruct a deleted exception while players are waiting.

  • Back up every existing .txt filter file.
  • Back up beserver.cfg or beserver_x64.cfg if present.
  • Record the profile path and startup parameters used to launch the instance.
  • Note the mission version and enabled mods alongside the backup.

Choose the filter files your server actually needs

Filter files are ordinary text files whose names identify the command or script class being checked. Create only the files relevant to your mission and mods; an indiscriminate bundle makes diagnosis harder and increases the chance of false kicks.

File What it covers When to inspect it
scripts.txt Script-command checks A player receives a script restriction or a mission executes custom script code
remoteexec.txt Remote execution activity A remote function or command is blocked, or logs show suspicious remote calls
createvehicle.txt Vehicle and object creation events A mission or mod spawns vehicles, agents or other networked objects
deletevehicle.txt Vehicle and object deletion events Cleanup systems remove objects or a deletion restriction appears
mpeventhandler.txt Multiplayer event-handler activity A mod installs or invokes multiplayer event handlers
publicvariable.txt Public variable traffic Mission state is synchronized through public variables
publicvariableval.txt Values sent with public variables The variable name is allowed but its value triggers a restriction
remotecontrol.txt Remote-control operations Player or AI control is transferred over the network
selectplayer.txt Player-selection operations A mission changes a player’s controlled unit
setdamage.txt Damage-setting commands Medical, destruction or invulnerability scripts set damage values
setpos.txt Position-setting commands Teleport, respawn or cinematic scripts move units
setvariable.txt Variable-setting commands Mission or mod state is stored on objects, groups or namespaces
setvariableval.txt Values assigned by set-variable operations A value, rather than the variable name, is reported in a restriction
teamswitch.txt Team-switch operations Players can change units or teams during a mission
waypointcondition.txt Waypoint conditions Dynamic waypoint logic is used
waypointstatement.txt Waypoint statements Waypoints execute custom statements

The maintained BattlEye filter list includes these names and others. The list is a starting inventory, not a drop-in policy. A server running a simple vanilla mission may need far fewer files than a heavily scripted cooperative campaign.

5 B_MRAP_01_
5 "some phrase"

The first example uses a prefix, so it can match a family of class names beginning with B_MRAP_01_. The second quotes a phrase containing a space. Do not treat the number as a universal severity scale without checking the current BattlEye documentation for the action semantics used by your server version. Select a logging action while you learn normal traffic, then move only a confirmed abusive match to a stronger action.

Quoting and escaping

Put phrases containing spaces inside quotation marks. In ordinary filters, escape regular-expression metacharacters when you intend to match them literally. The characters that require particular care are ^ $ . | ? * + ( ) [ ] { }. For example, a literal period in a pattern must not be left as an unescaped wildcard. Test a proposed rule against known legitimate strings before enabling a kick-producing action.

scripts.txt is the important exception: it does not support regular expressions. Do not copy regex assumptions from another filter file into scripts.txt; write the literal script pattern supported by that file instead.

Prefer narrow patterns

A short prefix can be useful when every class in a family is unwanted, but broad fragments such as a common command name can match mission systems, framework code or mod functions. Start with the exact logged string. Widen to a prefix only after checking the complete set of legitimate uses in the current mission and mod versions.

A safe tuning workflow

1. Start with observation

Use logging actions first. Launch the real mission with its normal mod set and let players or testers exercise spawning, interaction, remote calls, respawn and other scripted features. Record the filter file, matched text, player or object context and mission version for every entry.

2. Read both logs and console output

Inspect the corresponding BattlEye log and the server console. The log line tells you what text matched; the surrounding mission activity tells you whether that text was expected. A restriction that appears immediately after a mod update may be a changed class name or function signature rather than an exploit.

3. Isolate the exact match

Change only the rule that produced the confirmed false positive. Avoid deleting an entire file or adding a catch-all exception. Keep a change record with the old line, the replacement line, the reason and the test result.

4. Escalate one rule at a time

After a rule has been observed and verified as abusive, assign the stronger documented action to that line. Retest normal mission flows after each change. There is no authoritative universal threshold for filter sensitivity or false-positive rate because scripting differs between missions and mods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Re-test after updates

Repeat the observation cycle whenever the mission, server build or a major mod changes. A filter that was safe for one version can become too broad or too narrow in the next.

Coordinate BattlEye with CfgRemoteExec

Arma’s CfgRemoteExec controls which commands and functions may be executed remotely and which targets may receive them. BattlEye also filters remoteExec and remoteExecCall through remoteexec.txt. Both layers therefore matter when a legitimate remote call fails or a suspicious call appears in the logs.

Configuration precedence is local: the mission description takes priority over the campaign configuration, which takes priority over the game or mod configuration. When diagnosing a mismatch, inspect the most local configuration first, then compare its allow/deny rules with the relevant remoteexec.txt entry. Whitelisting a function in one layer does not automatically make it acceptable in the other.

Configure RCon separately and securely

Create the correct server file

Place beserver.cfg in the BattlEye working directory. A 64-bit server may use beserver_x64.cfg instead. Set a private RConPassword; never reuse a password published in a guide, startup script or support ticket.

Choose and protect the port

You may set RConPort and RConIP. The RCon port must differ from the game server’s reserved ports. Allow that port through the firewall only for trusted administrator addresses, and do not expose the password in public configuration files or screenshots.

Diagnose a failed connection

  • Confirm that the RCon file is in the active BattlEye directory, not a different profile.
  • Check the password for invisible spaces and ensure it matches the running instance.
  • Verify that the chosen port is not part of the game server’s reserved range.
  • Check host and local firewalls, security groups and any container or panel port mapping.
  • Review the BattlEye log and restart the server if the host requires a restart to read RCon settings.

Reload filters without a full restart

BattlEye documents the RCon command loadScripts for reloading scripts.txt without restarting the server. Use it after saving a validated change, then watch the log while a controlled test mission triggers the relevant script.

Do not assume that every filter file reloads through the same command. For files other than scripts.txt, use the reload or restart workflow supported by the server build or hosting panel. If the behavior does not change, perform a controlled restart and verify that the timestamp and contents of the file in the active profile were read.

  1. Save a backup and the edited file.
  2. Confirm the file path and spelling, including the .txt extension.
  3. Use loadScripts through authenticated RCon when the edited file is scripts.txt.
  4. Run a test mission that performs the matching action and one nearby legitimate action.
  5. Record the resulting log entries and roll back immediately if legitimate players are restricted.

Common problems and precise fixes

“Restriction” kicks begin after a mod update

Compare the exact logged string with the rule that matched it. If the new mod legitimately changed a class or function, update the narrow exception for that string and test the affected feature. Do not remove all protection from the file simply because one line became stale.

A scripts.txt pattern behaves unlike a regex

Remove regex assumptions. scripts.txt does not support regular expressions, so metacharacters and grouping concepts used in ordinary filters will not behave as expected there. Replace the pattern with the literal syntax supported by the scripts filter and verify it in a logging pass.

A remote call fails even though remoteexec.txt looks correct

Inspect CfgRemoteExec at the mission level, then campaign and game/mod levels according to the precedence order. Confirm that the command or function, its target, and the BattlEye rule all permit the intended call. A denial in the most local configuration can override a broader allowance elsewhere.

Filters appear to be ignored

  • Check that BattlEye = 1 is set in the server configuration.
  • Find the profile directory selected by the actual startup parameters.
  • Open the BattlEye directory inside that profile and verify the filenames and extensions.
  • Confirm new log entries are being written there after a controlled test.
  • Restart if the file type is not covered by a supported live-reload command.

Legitimate players are kicked by a broad prefix

Temporarily return the line to a logging action, reproduce the legitimate behavior and compare the complete matched text. Replace the broad prefix with the smallest exact string that distinguishes the abusive action. Keep the original line in your dated backup so the change can be reversed.

Self-hosted server or managed hosting?

The important question is not the provider’s brand; it is whether the service exposes the controls BattlEye administration requires. Evaluate the following capabilities before renting a managed instance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Capability Why it matters Question to ask a host
BattlEye directory access You must create and edit filter files and read logs. Can administrators access the active profile’s BattlEye directory?
Custom profile and startup parameters The working directory follows the active profile and launch options. Can we set or inspect custom profile paths and startup parameters?
RCon port and firewall control RCon needs a distinct, restricted port. Can we choose the port and restrict inbound addresses?
Backups and rollback A bad rule can affect every player. Are filter, profile and server backups downloadable and restorable?
Log access Tuning depends on exact matched strings. Can we download BattlEye and server console logs promptly?
Restart and reload control Changes need a predictable apply path. Can administrators run loadScripts and restart on demand?

A service that hides the profile path, filters logs or forces a shared RCon port prevents the careful, mission-specific workflow BattlEye expects, regardless of its advertised hardware specifications.

Operational checklist

  • Configuration: BattlEye is enabled with BattlEye = 1.
  • Location: You have verified the active profile and its BattlEye directory.
  • Files: Only mission- and mod-relevant filter files are present.
  • Syntax: Each rule starts with an action number and keyword; phrases are quoted; ordinary-filter metacharacters are escaped.
  • Exception: You have not applied regex assumptions to scripts.txt.
  • Tuning: New rules were logged and tested before stronger actions were enabled.
  • Remote execution: CfgRemoteExec and remoteexec.txt agree, with mission-level precedence checked.
  • RCon: The password is private, the port is outside the game-port range and the firewall limits access.
  • Recovery: Dated backups and a rollback procedure are available.
  • Verification: Logs confirm that the intended file was loaded after a reload or restart.

What a well-maintained filter setup looks like

A dependable setup is deliberately small, documented and tested against the exact mission currently running. It has a known profile path, backups, readable logs and an administrator who can distinguish a changed mod string from malicious behavior. Rules are narrowed from observed evidence rather than copied wholesale, and remote execution is checked in both Arma configuration and BattlEye’s filter layer. That approach takes longer than pasting a generic pack once, but it avoids the two costly outcomes of filter administration: leaving an exploit unexamined and kicking legitimate players because a pattern was broader than the mission’s real behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which BattlEye files are mandatory for every Arma 3 server?

None are universal. Create the plain-text files required by the commands, scripts and mods used by your mission; common choices include scripts.txt, remoteexec.txt, createvehicle.txt, publicvariable.txt, setdamage.txt, setpos.txt and setvariable.txt.

Can I reload every BattlEye filter without restarting?

BattlEye documents the RCon command loadScripts for reloading scripts.txt. Other filter files may require the server build’s supported reload workflow or a restart, so verify each change in the log.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a rule work in one mission but kick players in another?

Filter content is mission- and mod-specific. Different missions can use the same command or class name for legitimate purposes, so a rule must be tested against the exact mission and mod versions running on your server.

Is BattlEye enough to control remote execution?

No. Arma’s CfgRemoteExec and BattlEye’s remoteexec.txt both apply to remoteExec and remoteExecCall. Check the most local Arma configuration first, then confirm the BattlEye rule.
