No. Olivier Gay reported a legal demand over the comic’s title in March 2026, but Sandfall Interactive withdrew its representatives’ demands four days later. Gay said the comic would continue as L’Académie Clair-Obscur. The reported dispute did not establish a court ruling or a forced rename.
What happened to the comic’s name?
On March 6, 2026, comic writer Olivier Gay said he had received a letter from a lawyer representing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive. According to Gay’s public account, the letter asked him to stop selling the Drakoo comic under the title Académie Clair-Obscur. The letter itself was not made available in the reporting cited here, so its exact terms are known through Gay’s account.
On March 10, Sandfall said it was withdrawing its legal representatives’ demands. Gay subsequently thanked the studio and said the comic could continue under its existing title. Numerama reported the timeline and statements in its March 10, 2026 coverage; GamesRadar+ also summarized the withdrawal and Gay’s confirmation at GamesRadar+.
The available reporting describes a legal demand, not a filed or adjudicated court case. There is no established court order requiring a rename.

Why were the comic and game titles in conflict?
Both titles contain “Clair-Obscur,” but the works have different premises. The comic follows Daimon, a peasant admitted to an elite magic school despite lacking the education and social codes of its noble students. In the comic, “clair-obscur” refers to a particular magical technique. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a separate role-playing game.
Drakoo said the comic was an independent editorial project and that it was not intended to create confusion with the game or benefit from its notoriety. The publisher also said the comic’s story and graphic style had no points in common with the game. Those are Drakoo’s statements, not a court’s findings about the works or the title.
Was the comic planned before Expedition 33?
Drakoo said the comic was imagined in 2019 and its title was approved before the game was announced. Gay also said he pitched the comic in 2019 and had a contract for it under that title from March 2024. The contract date is Gay’s account as reported by Numerama; the contract was not independently reviewed in the cited coverage.
The game was released on April 24, 2025, according to the Brazilian report cited in Numerama’s timeline. The comic’s first volume followed on January 7, 2026. That chronology supports the publisher’s and creator’s account that the comic originated before the game’s release, but it does not by itself settle any question of trademark rights or legal merits.

What did Sandfall and Drakoo say?
In a March 10, 2026 statement reproduced by Numerama, Sandfall said: “Nous avons toujours voulu soutenir les artistes et encourager la créativité, et c’est l’une des valeurs les plus importantes que nous voulons défendre à Sandfall.” The studio said the action involving the comic did not align with its wishes and values, and that it was withdrawing its legal representatives’ demands.
Drakoo’s March 9 post said the comic’s development spanned years, that it had been imagined in 2019, and that its title was approved before the game was announced. The publisher also stated: “Notre intention n’a jamais été de créer une confusion avec le jeu vidéo, ni de tirer profit de sa notoriété.” These statements explain each party’s public position; they do not amount to a legal determination.
