langinfo.dll is usually an ABBYY FineReader application file, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows says it is missing, cannot be loaded, or was not found, repair or reinstall the FineReader installation that supplied it rather than copying a replacement into System32.
The file is described as “Letters and languages support dll.” It may also be included in a scanner, multifunction printer, document-management application, or OCR SDK that bundles ABBYY technology. The affected program may therefore not be named FineReader.

Start here: identify the program that is failing
Before changing Windows files, find the executable that produces the error.
- Note the complete error message and the program name in the title bar.
- Right-click the program shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and check Target.
- If the shortcut does not reveal the path, right-click the running process in Task Manager and select Open file location.
- Look for a nearby FineReader, ABBYY, OCR, scanner, or document-management folder.
The correct repair target is the application directory that should contain langinfo.dll. Do not begin by searching C:WindowsSystem32 or downloading the file from a DLL website.

Commonly reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because langinfo.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
- “There was a problem starting langinfo.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading langinfo.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because langinfo.dll was not found.”
- “langinfo.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are commonly reported variants, not necessarily official ABBYY wording.
Fix 1: repair FineReader or the parent application
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Repair is the safest first step because it restores the complete, matching set of ABBYY files and dependencies.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select ABBYY FineReader, ABBYY FineReader PDF, or the scanner or document application that includes ABBYY components.
- Select Change.
- Choose Repair, if available.
- Select Next and let the repair finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application again.
On some systems, the entry may be named after an OEM product rather than FineReader. If the error began after using a scanner, printer, or document-management program, repair that parent product first.

The error is resolved when the original application starts without the langinfo.dll message and its OCR or scanning function works normally. Check the application’s installation directory if necessary. A repaired installation should contain its own matching ABBYY files in that directory.
If Repair is unavailable or the repair fails, continue with a complete reinstall.
Fix 2: reinstall the exact FineReader edition
Time needed: 15–40 minutes
Do not install an unrelated newer product merely because it also uses ABBYY OCR. Different FineReader generations and bundled applications can use different files.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find FineReader or the application that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Reinstall using the original ABBYY installer, your ABBYY account, legitimate installation media, or your organization’s deployment share.
- If the installer contains
Setup.exe, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. - Accept the default installation path unless your organization requires another location.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Open the application and test the operation that previously failed.
If the program came with a scanner or multifunction printer, use that device’s original software package. Installing the newest standalone FineReader may not restore the component expected by the bundled application.

If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, record the full path shown by the error or by the application shortcut. A dependency, antivirus quarantine, architecture mismatch, or incomplete installer may still be involved.
Fix 3: check Microsoft Visual C++ prerequisites
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A message saying “specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency used by langinfo.dll is missing. It does not always mean the named file itself is absent.

ABBYY installers may require Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages. On a 32-bit Windows installation, the x86 package is relevant. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit FineReader application may still require the x86 package, and the installer may also require x64 components.
Use Microsoft’s official latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Install only the package indicated by the FineReader installer or by the application’s documented requirements.
For a typical Windows installation:
- Open the Microsoft page.
- Download
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit application. - On 64-bit Windows, also install
vc_redist.x64.exewhen the ABBYY installer requires it. - Run the downloaded installer as administrator.
- Choose Repair if that runtime is already installed, or choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
- Start FineReader again.
Do not install the ARM64 package unless the computer and application specifically require it. Visual C++ Redistributable repairs a runtime dependency; it does not replace langinfo.dll.
Fix 4: inspect antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may remove or quarantine an ABBYY file after an update, cleanup operation, or scan. Do not immediately disable antivirus protection or restore an unknown copy.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry whose original path matches the FineReader or parent application directory.
- Confirm the file name, original location, publisher information, and the source of the installation.
- If the file is clearly part of a trusted, correctly installed ABBYY package, use the available restore or allow option according to your organization’s security policy.
- If the path is unfamiliar, the publisher is not trustworthy, or the file came from an unofficial download, leave it quarantined.
- Reinstall the parent application from a legitimate source instead.

After restoring a verified file, update the security definitions and run another scan. If the file is removed again, treat that as a trust or installation problem and contact the software vendor rather than repeatedly restoring it.

Fix 5: check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
Legacy metadata lists known langinfo.dll versions as 32-bit, including:

These are third-party inventory details, not proof of the exact FineReader release installed on every computer.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit FineReader application. That does not mean the application should receive a 64-bit replacement DLL. It needs the compatible 32-bit ABBYY components supplied with its own installation.

Do not replace a version 9 or version 10 component with a file from another FineReader generation. Mixed files can produce an invalid-image error, missing dependencies, or new crashes.

Fix 6: repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
langinfo.dll is a third-party application DLL. Microsoft’s System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management tools repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store. They normally do not recreate a missing FineReader file inside an application directory.
Use them when you also see Windows instability, damaged built-in apps, update failures, or other system-file errors.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Select Download & install when updates are offered.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft provides current Windows Update installation instructions.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish and test FineReader again.
Microsoft documents DISM image repair and System File Checker.
If these commands report that Windows was repaired but langinfo.dll is still missing, that result is expected for an application-owned file. Return to the FineReader repair or reinstall steps.

Use System Restore only if the error began after a known software installation, cleanup, update, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before proceeding. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
If no appropriate restore point exists, do not create one after the failure and expect it to repair the old installation. Reinstall the parent application instead.
Fix 8: update drivers only when the failing product depends on them
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics, scanner, or printer driver is not a normal source of langinfo.dll, so driver reinstallation is not a first-line fix. Consider it when the error started with a scanner or multifunction printer package, or when the device itself is failing.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Display adapters.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties and inspect the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the device manufacturer.
- If the driver is damaged, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the correct package from the manufacturer.
- Reinstall the scanner or printer’s complete software package if it supplied ABBYY components.
Do not remove a working device driver merely because langinfo.dll is missing. Driver work is useful only when the device package is the actual parent application.

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. Microsoft describes it as a utility for registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
langinfo.dll is an application support library, not a component that should normally be registered manually. Running commands such as these is therefore unlikely to help:
regsvr32 langinfo.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32langinfo.dll
They may produce an entry-point error, an architecture error, or no useful change. ABBYY documentation for manual registration concerns specific engine libraries, not langinfo.dll. Repair or reinstall the complete ABBYY product instead.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download langinfo.dll from an unverified DLL repository and copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- another application’s directory
- a folder selected only because Windows searched it
That approach can fail because the file may be:
- the wrong FineReader generation
- the wrong architecture
- altered or malicious
- missing a dependency
- incompatible with the executable that loads it
- unsigned or from an unknown publisher
It can also conceal the real problem, such as an incomplete installation or antivirus quarantine. The safe sources are the original ABBYY installer, a legitimate FineReader account or installation medium, an organization’s deployment package, or the bundled scanner or document application’s official installer.

Likely causes, in order
- Damaged or incomplete FineReader installation: repair or reinstall the parent application.
- Wrong architecture or mixed versions: restore the matching 32-bit ABBYY package instead of substituting a random DLL.
- Antivirus quarantine: verify the original path and publisher before restoring anything.
- Missing Visual C++ runtime: install the x86 or x64 package required by the ABBYY installer.
- Malware, disk corruption, or tampering: scan Windows and reinstall from a trusted source.
- A recent system or software change: use System Restore only when a suitable earlier restore point exists.
- A missing dependency: “specified module could not be found” may refer to a library required by
langinfo.dll.
What to collect if repair fails
Before contacting ABBYY, the software vendor, or your organization’s IT team, record:
- the affected executable and full installation path
- the exact error text
- the FineReader or bundled-product edition
- the Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit
- when the error began
- whether the issue followed an uninstall, update, restore, cleanup, or security detection
- the antivirus Protection History entry
- the path where
langinfo.dllwas expected - whether the file is digitally signed
- the results of the repair and reinstall attempts
A support technician can use that information to determine whether the missing file belongs to standalone FineReader, an OEM bundle, or another ABBYY-based product.
FAQ
Is langinfo.dll a Windows system file?
No credible evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with ABBYY FineReader and should normally remain inside the application directory that loads it.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Copying an application DLL into a global Windows directory can create architecture and version conflicts. Restore the complete application installation instead.
Does Windows 64-bit require a 64-bit langinfo.dll?
No. A 32-bit FineReader program needs compatible 32-bit ABBYY components even when Windows is 64-bit.

Can SFC restore langinfo.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows resources, not arbitrary third-party files in FineReader’s directory.
Why does Windows say the specified module is missing when the file is present?
A dependency of langinfo.dll may be missing, or the DLL may be incompatible, damaged, blocked, or from the wrong product generation.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually not. This file is not normally repaired by manual registration. Use the FineReader repair or reinstall process.
What if the error appears in a scanner program instead of FineReader?
Repair or reinstall the scanner or multifunction printer software that bundled ABBYY OCR. The correct source may be the device manufacturer’s original package rather than standalone FineReader.
