reseditui.dll is a Microsoft Visual Studio component, not a normal Windows system DLL. It belongs to the Visual C++ Resource Editor Package User Interface used by Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Visual Studio installation that is trying to load it.
Do not download a random copy and place it in C:WindowsSystem32. That can introduce the wrong build or architecture and usually leaves the damaged Visual Studio installation unresolved.

The filename alone cannot prove which Visual Studio edition, installation path, language, or service-pack state is involved. It is particularly associated with the older Visual Studio .NET generation. That product is obsolete and no longer supported, so its repair process differs from the current Visual Studio Installer workflow.
First, identify which program is failing
The location of the error determines the correct repair.
If Visual Studio shows the error
Repair the Visual Studio installation first. A missing file during startup, project loading, or resource editing normally points to a damaged or incomplete installation.
Recommended Free Tools
If an old developer tool shows the error
Find the program’s installation directory and determine whether it was installed with Visual Studio .NET. Use the original installer or verified Microsoft-provided installation media for that product.
If another application or game shows the error
Do not assume Windows is missing the file. Check the exact executable named in the error and the directory from which it is launching. No reliable evidence establishes a particular modern game as an official distributor of reseditui.dll.
If the program has its own repair or verification feature, use that feature first. If it was developed with an old Visual Studio environment, reinstalling the application may also be necessary.
Check whether the file exists
If the error gives a path, inspect that exact folder. If it does not, use File Explorer search:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press
Windows+E. - Select This PC.
- Search for
reseditui.dll. - Note every matching path.
- Do not copy one result over another.
A copy beside the Visual Studio installation may be relevant. A copy in a temporary folder, download directory, or unexpected system location deserves additional checking.
Fix 1: Repair the current Visual Studio installation
This is the best first fix when the affected product is a current Visual Studio release.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Visual Studio Installer.
- Open Visual Studio Installer.
- Find the installed Visual Studio instance associated with the error.
- Select More.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and allow the installer to reacquire damaged files.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Visual Studio and load the project that produced the error.
Microsoft states that repair reinstalls existing assemblies and replaces damaged installation files. It can also reset settings, profiles, and some local customizations, so record important configuration details first. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio repair procedure.
How to tell whether repair worked
The repair succeeded if:
- Visual Studio starts without the missing-file message.
- The affected project opens.
- The C++ resource editor loads normally.
- The same executable no longer reports
reseditui.dllas missing.
If the error remains, continue with the component check below rather than copying a DLL manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 2: Restore missing Visual Studio components
A Visual Studio modification, cleanup program, failed update, or incomplete installation can remove a required workload or component.
- Open Visual Studio Installer from the Start menu.
- Find the relevant Visual Studio installation.
- Select More.
- Select Modify.
- On the Workloads tab, select Desktop development with C++ if the installation is a current Visual Studio release used for C++ development.
- Open Individual components if the required C++ tooling is not obvious from the workload list.
- Select the components needed by the project.
- Select Modify.
- Restart Windows after the installation completes.
- Test Visual Studio again.
Use Microsoft’s Visual Studio workload and component modification instructions.
Do not assume that installing the latest C++ runtime will restore this file. The Visual C++ Redistributable supplies runtime files for applications compiled with Visual C++; reseditui.dll is an IDE resource-editor package.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall Visual Studio .NET
If the error comes from Visual Studio .NET 2002 or another legacy installation, the current Visual Studio Installer may not manage it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use this order:
- Identify the exact legacy Visual Studio version from the Start menu, installed-program list, project documentation, or the error’s executable path.
- Locate the original installation disc or authenticated Microsoft-provided installation media.
- Start the installer.
- Choose Repair if that option is available.
- If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall the matching product.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original program again.
Do not substitute Visual Studio 2019, Visual Studio 2022, or a current Visual C++ Redistributable for the old IDE component. Different Visual Studio generations are not interchangeable, and mixing files from different versions can create further loader errors.

Microsoft identifies Visual Studio .NET 2002 as an obsolete product. For eligible accounts, Microsoft’s subscription software download list may provide access to older software. Use only authenticated Microsoft sources or media you can verify.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious DLL. Check its record before attempting to restore anything.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that names
reseditui.dll. - Check the reported path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from a verified Microsoft Visual Studio installation.
- The path belongs to that installation.
- The detection has been confirmed as a false positive.
- The file’s Microsoft digital signature is valid, where applicable.
If the origin is uncertain, do not allow the quarantined copy. Repair or reinstall Visual Studio from verified Microsoft media instead. Microsoft explains this workflow in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.
Fix 5: Check Windows components with DISM and SFC
reseditui.dll is normally a Visual Studio file, so Windows system repair tools may not restore it. They are useful when the missing-file error appeared alongside broader Windows corruption, failed updates, damaged system applications, or multiple unrelated missing files.
Before running them, save your work and open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Visual Studio again.
Run DISM before SFC. Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker and DISM instructions.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the original program. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the Visual Studio repair or legacy-product reinstall. SFC is not a guaranteed repair mechanism for a DLL owned by Visual Studio.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows detected system issues before any repair is applied; the repair action is handled by the full version, and it is not required when Visual Studio itself needs to be reinstalled.
Fix 6: Check optional Windows features only when the error identifies one
Installing Windows features is not a general replacement for reseditui.dll. Use this step only when the affected application specifically reports a missing Windows feature or framework.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features list.
- Enable only the feature required by the affected application.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application.
Do not enable random features in the hope that one will recreate a Visual Studio package. .NET Framework, DirectX, and the current Visual C++ Redistributable do not provide an evidence-based repair for this specific IDE DLL unless the error also names a different dependency.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the evidence points to a driver
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not the normal owner of reseditui.dll. Driver repair is appropriate only when the program’s crash details, Event Viewer, or device behavior identifies a separate driver problem.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver provider and status.
- Use Update Driver only when a newer driver is available from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Do not remove a working driver simply because reseditui.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers when checking them manually is difficult; its free scan identifies possible issues, while the full version performs the driver installation. Reinstalling Visual Studio remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that product.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a known change
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after a software installation, update, cleanup operation, or configuration change.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error appeared.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can affect system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal documents. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.

Public catalogs commonly describe a known older reseditui.dll build as a 32-bit Win32 DLL, but Microsoft does not publish a current authoritative metadata page for this individual file. Treat catalog details as identification clues, not as proof that a downloaded copy is correct.
A 32-bit legacy Visual Studio component may load from a program directory under C:Program Files (x86). A 64-bit Windows installation can still run 32-bit applications. Do not assume that a 64-bit operating system requires a 64-bit copy of this DLL.
The correct match is determined by:
- The executable that requests the DLL.
- The Visual Studio version that installed it.
- The installation directory.
- The application’s architecture.
- The file’s original Microsoft source.
Do not mix a file from Visual Studio .NET with files from a later Visual Studio release. Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit application directory or use a copy from another computer without verifying its origin.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Unverified DLL download sites pages can provide:
- The wrong Visual Studio build.
- The wrong architecture.
- A modified or malicious file.
- A file with missing dependencies.
- A copy that does not match the requesting executable.
A checksum shown by an unknown download site does not prove that the file came from Microsoft. Use Visual Studio Installer, the original product media, or an authenticated Microsoft software download instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
reseditui.dll is not a general Windows component. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can cause version conflicts and does not repair the Visual Studio installation that owns the file.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary Visual Studio package DLL does not become functional merely because it was registered.
Running:
regsvr32 reseditui.dll
usually fails or accomplishes nothing for this type of file. Repair the owning product instead.
Do not copy the file from another computer
Another computer may have a different Visual Studio release, language, service-pack state, architecture, or damaged copy. It may also introduce an altered file into the installation.
If the repair still fails
Record these details before escalating:
- The exact error text.
- The executable that displays it.
- The full path where the program expects
reseditui.dll. - Whether any copy of the file exists.
- The Visual Studio version.
- Whether the issue began after an update, cleanup, antivirus detection, or disk problem.
- Any related Event Viewer entry or Visual Studio activity-log message.
If repair completes but the error remains, the message may identify another missing dependency. Check the executable and installation path again rather than repeatedly replacing reseditui.dll.
For suspected disk or filesystem corruption, check the drive, complete the DISM and SFC sequence, and then repair Visual Studio. If the problem began after a known software change, System Restore may be appropriate.
FAQ
Is reseditui.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a legitimate Microsoft file associated with the Visual C++ resource editor in Visual Studio .NET. Its legitimacy does not mean every copy found online is safe.
Is reseditui.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable Microsoft evidence indicates that it ships as a Windows component. It belongs to Visual Studio tooling.
Is it included in the Visual C++ Redistributable?
No. The Redistributable supplies runtime components for compiled applications. reseditui.dll is an IDE resource-editor package.
Should I download reseditui.dll separately?
No. Repair or reinstall the Visual Studio installation that owns the file. For an old Visual Studio .NET product, use verified original media or an authenticated Microsoft software source.
Will regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually not. This is not a standard COM registration repair. Registering it can fail and does not replace missing Visual Studio package files.
Should I put it in System32?
No. Keep the file with the Visual Studio installation that loads it. Copying it into a Windows system folder is generally inappropriate.
