“Large Monsters” can mean giant creatures in fiction, but the rules here concern tabletop games. There is no universal tabletop size standard: in the cited AoD rulebook, a Large Monster uses a base 40 mm or larger and occupies an entire area, while Fate Core offers a different approach by treating a very large monster as a map made of several zones.
What “Large Monster” means depends on the game
A size label is a rules term, not a shared measurement across tabletop systems. It can indicate how a creature fits on the playing surface and how an encounter is played. The Guide to Monster Statistics describes size categories as conveying several kinds of play information, rather than merely describing appearance.
The examples below are specific to their named rules sources. They do not establish a standard for video games, kaiju fiction, miniatures generally, or tabletop games outside those systems.
How AoD distinguishes Small and Large Monsters
The AoD Rulebook defines Small Monsters as using 25 mm bases and occupying one square. Large Monsters use bases 40 mm or larger, occupy an entire area, and move from area to area. These dimensions and movement rules apply to that game; check the rulebook for the edition you play before choosing a miniature or resolving movement.

- Quick Facts: 65 minis, 28mm Heroic scale - Assembled and optimized for both painting and gameplay in most fantasy tabletop games, including D&D Unpainted and unprimed (PRIMER is recommended). Made of a mix of Hard PVC plastic and ABS plastic, which results in greater detail and feel compared to softer plastics.
- Refreshed Designs of Essential Monster & Encounter Miniatures for D&D: Wildspire's set of fantasy miniatures for D&D contains many classic and recognizable character types that frequent most Dungeons & Dragons games. Awesome for supplementing your existing collection or starting a new collection.
- Versatility & Value: This set includes a variety of highly useful and iconic figurines for D&D, allowing players to customize their encounters with unique d and d characters and dnd monster miniatures.
- Customer Satisfication Priority: If any of our dnd figures arrive damaged, we will be happy to make it up in any way we can. DND figurines and 28mm miniatures can sometimes not glue properly or may be prone to bending if the warehouse fails to exercise proper care.
- Painting Tips & Max Painting Potential: While priming the minis is optional, we recommend it to maximize the visual appeal and ease of painting. Express your artistic flair while enhancing your game experience. Use any acrylic hobby paint for PVC/plastic.
| AoD category | Base | Space and movement |
|---|---|---|
| Small Monster | 25 mm | Occupies one square |
| Large Monster | 40 mm or larger | Occupies an entire area and moves area to area |
Here, “large” changes how the monster occupies and traverses the map, not just the scale of its miniature. A base that fits another game’s convention may not fit AoD’s rules.
How Fate Core handles a very large monster
Evil Hat Productions’ Very Large Monsters supplement takes a different encounter-design approach: a very large monster can be treated as a map with several zones. Rather than representing the creature only as an opponent occupying a space, the encounter can make the creature itself the terrain or environment characters navigate.

- Expand Your Collection: D&D figures miniatures featuring diverse dnd models for every role-playing scenario and gaming session
This is a Fate Core supplement’s approach, not a general rule for tabletop monsters. It illustrates why comparisons should account for how a system models the creature, not only for the size of its base.
How to compare large-monster rules across games

- System and edition: confirm which rulebook defines the category.
- Physical footprint: find the specified base size, if any.
- Map occupancy and movement: check whether the monster takes a square, an area, multiple zones, or another defined space, and how it moves.
- Encounter role: determine whether the creature is played as an opponent on the map or modeled as part of the environment.
These questions help distinguish a miniature-scale convention from an encounter structure. The AoD rules specify a base and area movement; the Fate Core supplement provides a multi-zone design option. Neither example supplies a universal size chart.

For a physical tabletop game, use the rules system’s base-size convention rather than assuming a miniature marketed as a “large monster” will fit. In AoD, the relevant Large Monster base is 40 mm or larger; that measurement should not be applied to other games without checking their rules. Confirm a specific miniature’s base and compatibility before buying it.
