Larian CEO and Divinity game director Swen Vincke believes the upcoming RPG can surpass Baldur’s Gate 3. “It’s going to be better, in my opinion, on all fronts,” he told GameSpot on December 15, 2025. That is a confident prediction from the developer, not a verdict on a finished game: Larian has described its plans, but the new Divinity has not yet been released for players to judge.
Why does Larian think Divinity can be better?
Vincke’s key distinction is how the game’s rules are being designed. He said Larian found it challenging to bring players into Baldur’s Gate 3 because its classes could feel as though they followed different rulesets. In his view, building a ruleset specifically for a video game, rather than adapting one derived from tabletop play, could give the studio a better foundation.
That is a design rationale, not proof that Divinity’s eventual rules will be simpler, more balanced or more enjoyable. What is Larian aiming to change?
Larian has framed Divinity as an effort to expand player agency rather than reproduce Baldur’s Gate 3. Vincke’s stated goals reach across both the game’s systems and its story: he wants players’ choices to produce greater reactivity, more substantial consequences and more connected storylines.

More agency across the game
Vincke described agency as affecting character and systems development, personal identity, narrative and choices. In a December 16, 2025 interview with PC Gamer, he said: “The level of agency that we’re going to give you is very, very high—much higher than what happened in BG3. At least that’s our ambition,” The qualification matters: this describes what the team hopes to achieve, not a confirmed feature list or a measured comparison of the two games.
A different story to tell
Vincke also presented the announced game’s dark tone as an invitation for players to decide whether to bring light into the darkness or make it darker. Smith’s explanation for moving on is similarly direct: “We wouldn’t be excited if we were making the same game again.” Together, their comments position the project as an attempt to make a distinct follow-up, not simply a repeat of Baldur’s Gate 3. What is confirmed about the new Divinity?
Larian’s official Divinity page describes it as an RPG set in Rivellon, made by the team behind Baldur’s Gate 3, with ambitions for greater breadth and depth. The page tempers that pitch with “At least, that’s the plan.” The available statements establish the studio’s direction, not the final scope or mechanics.
Players do not need to know the earlier games to follow this one, according to Vincke. He said Larian intends to preserve continuity with the series while making the new entry understandable on its own. Familiarity with earlier Divinity games may provide context, but the studio has not presented it as a prerequisite.

When is Divinity coming out?
GameSpot reported on April 1, 2026, that no release date had been announced at that time. Vincke said development still had rough or missing parts, while the team had reached a stage where it could sense the game coming alive. That progress description does not establish a release window, and the dated report cannot confirm whether a later announcement has changed the status. Can Divinity actually surpass Baldur’s Gate 3?
That remains an open question. The sources establish Vincke’s confidence and explain the design choices behind it; they do not provide a completed game to compare, independent performance data or a final feature set. Larian’s press page says Baldur’s Gate 3 received over 200 Game of the Year awards, a studio-published accolade count with no year specified on the page. That recognition helps explain the scale of the comparison, but it cannot predict whether Divinity will match or exceed its predecessor’s reception.
