Why Isn’t Sol Ring Legal in Modern?

Sol Ring is not legal in Modern because it falls outside the format’s card pool—not because it appears on Modern’s banned list.

Sol Ring isn’t played in Modern because it is not in Modern’s eligible card pool—not because it appears on the format’s banned list. Wizards defines Modern as using cards from Eighth Edition onward, while Sol Ring is listed as restricted in Vintage. “Not legal” and “banned” mean different things here.

Why isn’t Sol Ring legal in Modern?

Modern’s card pool begins with Eighth Edition and extends to the present, according to Wizards’ Banned & Restricted page. Sol Ring is outside that pool, so it cannot be included in a Modern deck under the format’s standard rules.

That eligibility rule answers the question without needing a Modern ban entry. A card must first belong to a format’s permitted card pool; a banned list identifies cards from that pool that players may not use. Sol Ring does not appear on the current Modern banned list.

Is Sol Ring banned in Modern?

No. The more precise description is that Sol Ring is not legal in Modern because it is outside the format’s card pool. It is not listed as a Modern-banned card. That distinction matters: an absent card is not automatically legal simply because it has no entry on the banned list.

Where is Sol Ring allowed?

Wizards’ current Vintage list includes Sol Ring as a restricted card. In Vintage, restricted means a player may include one copy across their main deck and sideboard. That is different from Modern’s card-pool restriction: Vintage permits the card with a one-copy limit, while Modern does not admit it into its card pool.

Is power level the reason?

Sol Ring’s ability to accelerate mana early makes its power relevant to a discussion of format balance. Wizards says its banned-and-restricted policy is intended to protect diversity and address cards or strategies that skew play or prove too powerful. But the official material reviewed does not establish that Wizards made a Sol Ring-specific decision to ban it from Modern. Its ineligibility follows from the card-pool boundary, and claims about a specific historical ban rationale go beyond what those sources say.

Wizards’ June 29, 2026 announcement discusses Modern’s recent maintenance and says the team would scrutinize decks that regularly start with over half a dozen zero-mana artifacts. That passage concerns Modern Affinity and zero-mana artifacts; it is context for the format’s attention to fast starts, not a statement about Sol Ring, which costs one mana. Read the June 29, 2026 announcement as general Modern commentary, not a Sol Ring ruling.

What to check when building a Modern deck

  • Card-pool eligibility: Confirm the card belongs to Modern’s permitted pool.
  • Format list status: Check whether a card in that pool is banned or subject to another restriction. A card absent from the banned list may still be ineligible because it falls outside the pool.
  • Use the relevant format rules: Sol Ring’s Vintage restriction does not make it legal in Modern. Check Wizards’ Modern format reference and current Banned & Restricted list for the format you intend to play.
