No: Larian Studios said in March 2024 that it would not make Baldur’s Gate 4 or additional narrative expansions for Baldur’s Gate 3. That is a decision about Larian’s own projects—not confirmation that the wider Baldur’s Gate franchise is permanently over.
What Larian ruled out
Larian CEO and founder Swen Vincke said the studio would not make its own Baldur’s Gate 4. GameSpot reported him stating: “We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do.” GameSpot’s report covered the announcement.
The decision also ruled out Larian-made Baldur’s Gate 3 expansions. It did not mean the studio would stop all work on the existing game: reporting at the time distinguished new story expansions from ongoing updates and patches. The announcement and coverage of continued updates describe those separate points.
Why Larian changed direction
Vincke had considered doing more Baldur’s Gate work, but Larian chose to pursue new projects instead. Reports say the studio started work on planned DLC and then cancelled it because the team did not feel creatively committed to it. Forbes reported Vincke describing the work as “going through the motions” and not “coming from the heart.” Forbes’ reporting on the cancelled DLC and coverage of Larian’s future plans explain the shift.

The reported explanation is creative conviction, not a confirmed dispute with Wizards of the Coast. Larian subsequently pursued Divinity, but that direction describes what the studio worked on after the announcement; it does not establish a permanent position on every possible future Baldur’s Gate project.

No. Larian ruled out its own sequel and expansions, not every possible future game in the franchise. The announcement does not establish whether another developer or rights holder will make a Baldur’s Gate game, or when one might appear. It is most accurate to read it as Larian moving on from the series for its next projects.
