Larian’s next announced game is Divinity, a new game set in Rivellon—not Divinity: Original Sin 3. The studio says newcomers can start without playing earlier games, while returning players may find extra context and continuity.
What is Larian’s next game?
Larian revealed Divinity with a trailer at The Game Awards 2025, describing it as a new game set in Rivellon and its most ambitious title yet. It is in development. Founder and game director Swen Vincke noted that, despite the studio’s long history with the series, this is its first game entitled simply “Divinity.” Larian’s announcement
That title makes the clearest distinction: this is a new game in the wider Divinity world, but it has not been announced as Divinity: Original Sin 3. Larian has not specified whether it is a direct sequel to a particular earlier game, where it falls in the series timeline, or whether it should be considered a reboot.
Why the Original Sin 3 reports are not a contradiction
On December 9, 2025, before the reveal, Larian publishing head Michael Douse said there were “currently” no plans for a new Divinity: Original Sin 3. Three days later, Larian announced a game called Divinity. Douse’s comment was about the specifically titled Original Sin 3 at that moment; it was not a statement that Larian had no new game in the broader Divinity series in development. - ivinity Original Sin,
Do you need to play the earlier games first?
No. Larian says the new game is designed to be accessible to people who have not played its previous titles. The studio also says players familiar with Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 may get greater understanding and continuity. That makes earlier games optional context, not a stated prerequisite. Larian’s announcement
What is confirmed about gameplay?
Turn-based combat and a new ruleset
Post-reveal reporting quotes Vincke confirming that Divinity will use turn-based combat and a new ruleset informed by lessons from Larian’s earlier games. It is not described as simply reusing Original Sin 2’s combat rules. PC Gamer’s report on the ruleset

Agency and consequences are development ambitions
Vincke has said Larian’s ambition is to offer very high player agency, greater reactivity across narrative and systems, and deeper consequences. He specifically framed the agency comparison with Baldur’s Gate 3 as an ambition, not a guarantee that every planned feature will appear in the final game. PC Gamer’s report on Vincke’s comments
