In Last Epoch, the Mage skill tree is a collection of separate specialization trees—one for each Mage skill—not a single tree with one correct route. Nodes can change damage type, area, mana use, crowd control, defense, and mobility. The right choices depend on your skill setup and goals; the official reference describes the options, but it does not rank a universally best allocation.
What is the Last Epoch Mage skill tree?
Each Mage skill has its own point-based specialization tree. You spend points on nodes that modify how that skill works, with many nodes offering a limited number of ranks. The official Mage Skill Tree reference, dated March 26, 2026, documents the skill nodes and their effects. Because game values can change between patches, check the live reference for current node details.
The official page covers these skills:
- Lightning Blast
- Fireball
- Snap Freeze
- Elemental Nova
- Mana Strike
- Flame Ward
- Teleport
- Frost Claw
- Static
- Glacier
- Disintegrate
- Volcanic Orb
- Focus
The official Skill Trees index also lists Mage mastery trees for Sorcerer, Spellblade, and Runemaster. The index establishes that these tree references exist; it does not explain mastery unlock rules or establish that every character can access every listed tree.
What can Mage skill nodes change?
Nodes can reshape a skill rather than simply add damage. Depending on the skill and node, choices can affect its element and scaling, area, channeling, mana cost, status effects, defensive value, or movement behavior.

Damage type and scaling
Lightning Blast nodes can affect chaining, lightning damage, freeze chance, and shock effects. Elemental Nova can be steered toward fire, ice, or lightning, with related changes to damage and other properties. When choosing a path, consider whether its damage type matches the rest of your build’s scaling rather than judging a node by one number in isolation.
Area, channeling, and mana
Elemental Nova nodes can change area, channeling, and mana demand. Volcanic Orb nodes can modify speed, duration, and mana use alongside fire-focused effects. A version that produces repeated or concentrated output may cost more mana or cover less area; check how the tradeoff fits the encounters you want to handle.

Control and utility
Glacier’s explosions can be modified for effects including chill, freeze, and stun, as well as changes to mana cost and interactions such as Ice Vortex. Lightning Blast also has nodes related to freeze and shock. These effects can support control as well as damage, so weigh their practical value against the output or resource efficiency you give up.
Defense and movement
Flame Ward and Focus include defensive or status-effect interactions, while Teleport is a movement skill. Focus also has a node that, according to the official reference, teleports the player to an accessible target location when channeling Focus begins. Consider whether such utility supports the way you position and survive, not just the damage your skills deal.

- Choose the skill’s job. Decide whether it is meant to deal your main damage, provide area coverage, control enemies, protect you, or help you reposition.
- Pick a damage direction. For damage skills, identify the element and scaling you intend to support. Elemental Nova, for example, offers fire, ice, and lightning directions.
- Check the full cost. Look beyond damage modifiers: note changes to mana use, channeling, area, speed, and duration. A powerful-looking node may make the skill harder to sustain or less convenient to use.
- Value utility for your actual setup. Crowd control, ward or other defense, and mobility may be more useful than a small offensive increase when they address a weakness in your build.
- Recheck the live tree after updates. Node values and effects are patch-sensitive; use the official Mage reference for the version you are playing.
Which Mage skill nodes should you take?
There is no single allocation established by the official skill reference as best. It describes node effects, not a current build ranking or performance comparison. A useful recommendation would need to identify the game patch, play mode, skill setup, and goal—such as focused damage, area coverage, control, defense, or resource efficiency—and explain the tradeoffs behind its choices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Mage skill tree one tree or several?
For skill specialization, it is several trees: each listed Mage skill has its own point-based nodes. Separately, the official index lists Sorcerer, Spellblade, and Runemaster mastery tree references under Mage. Those are part of the wider Mage tree ecosystem, not additional nodes in an individual skill’s specialization tree.
