Riot has outlined major League of Legends updates for after 2026, including a redesigned client integrated with the game experience, a visual and gameplay revamp of Summoner’s Rift, and work on the new-player experience. Bloomberg’s reporting, relayed by gaming outlets, calls the project “League Next” and puts it in 2027, but Riot has not confirmed that name or a release date.
What Riot has said is coming
In a video update published December 18, 2025, League executive producer Paul “Pabro” Bellezza and League Studio Head Andrei “Meddler” van Roon acknowledged that Riot is working on larger updates to the game. The public outline covers three areas:
- A new client: Riot described an around-game client integrated with the in-game experience.
- A revamped Summoner’s Rift: The plan includes entirely new visuals and some gameplay changes.
- A better introduction for new players: Riot said it is overhauling the new-player experience.
Bellezza framed the onboarding work around making League easier to recommend to friends: “We’re overhauling the new player experience, so that once we’re done, it should be the best time ever to get your friends into League.” The quote is reported from Riot’s December video by PC Gamer.
What “League Next” and 2027 mean
PC Gamer and GamesRadar+ relay Bloomberg’s report that the overhaul is internally called “League Next” and is slated for 2027. Those are reported details, not a firm public launch commitment from Riot. The Riot remarks cited in those articles provide no exact release date, and the public outline does not establish a complete feature list.

GamesRadar+ also distinguishes the confirmed broad scope from additional details attributed to Bloomberg: reworked character models, interface changes, and backend improvements were not confirmed in Riot’s public description covered by the article. They should therefore be treated as unconfirmed reporting, not promised features.
Latest timing: more information is not a launch date
In a developer Q&A published July 14, 2026, Bellezza said the client was “proceeding smoothly” and that Riot expected to share more details at the end of the year. He did not give a specific timeline for when players would get the client. Inven Global’s account of the Q&A quotes him saying that separating Teamfight Tactics onto its own client and engine had given Riot more freedom to improve the League experience.

Separately, PCGamesN reported in June 2026 that van Roon expected Riot to discuss League Next after MSI, with Worlds 2026 then viewed as the likely venue for further detail. That is a reported plan for when Riot might reveal information—not evidence that the overhaul will launch at Worlds or in 2027.
How the overhaul differs from 2026 season changes
The broader post-2026 project is distinct from the seasonal gameplay adjustments Riot previewed for 2026. In its official 2026 Season One preview, Riot said it wanted more strategies, including splitting and sieging, to be viable; to balance role agency; to reduce objective fatigue; and to get players into the action faster.

That preview also listed concrete 2026 changes: minions would spawn 35 seconds sooner, Atakhan and its Blood Roses and Petals would be removed, Baron would return to spawning at 20 minutes, and Feats of Strength would be removed. These are season-level changes, not the announced scope of the larger client, map, and onboarding overhaul.

Riot’s public outline establishes the direction of the work, but not the detailed implementation. It does not specify a launch date, a complete list of client or Rift changes, or whether every feature described in reporting will be included. In July 2026, Riot said the client was progressing and that more information was expected by year-end, while declining to say when players would see it.
