After source code for the original WipEout leaked in 2022, developer Dominic Szablewski used it as the starting point for an unofficial, near-total rewrite. The project rebuilt rendering, physics and sound, targeted Windows, Linux, macOS and WebAssembly, and was described in 2023 as playable in a browser. It is not a Sony remaster, and its README says the work remains incomplete and cannot be used in a commercial release.
What happened to the leaked WipEout source code?
In an August 2023 account, Szablewski said the leaked material he examined was primarily the Windows ATI 3D Rage Edition, a version bundled with ATI graphics hardware—not a clean copy of the original PlayStation codebase. He described the recovered source tree as a collection of hurried ports and intermediate versions.

According to Szablewski, directories labelled WipeoutPSX and WIN95/ held dysfunctional intermediate copies rather than the original PlayStation and Windows 95 versions. He said Wipeout98/ appeared to contain the code compiled into the ATI edition, while also including headers from other directories. His account traces a progression through PlayStation, DOS, Windows 95 and ATI Rage code. These are the developer’s observations about the tree, not an independently established history of every file. Szablewski’s account details that inspection.
The Windows port also had visible problems. Szablewski described lost vertex lighting, missing transparency, seams in geometry, incorrect depth sorting and poorly spaced text. Ars Technica likewise reported issues including rough geometry, sluggish performance and text-rendering problems; these are descriptions of how the port looked and behaved, not published benchmark results. What did the rewrite change?
Szablewski characterized the work as a rewrite of rendering, physics, sound and “everything everywhere.” Ars Technica reported that the code shrank from 40,699 lines to 7,731. That comparison is Ars Technica’s report; the sources do not provide an independent audit of how the lines were counted. The report also quoted Szablewski describing about 5,000 lines of if else handling for menu state in the old code—a remark about that menu implementation, not a general measure of the game’s complexity.
From PlayStation ordering tables to OpenGL
The original PlayStation’s graphics hardware did not use a z-buffer to determine which surfaces appeared in front. As Szablewski explained, the game built graphics primitives and submitted them in depth order through an ordering table. The Windows port had effectively recreated parts of that PlayStation rendering behavior in software. His rewrite translated the game’s old structures and assumptions into a modern OpenGL rendering path rather than simply polishing the port’s existing output.

Desktop and browser targets
In his August 10, 2023 post, Szablewski wrote: “The result is a (nearly) complete rewrite that compiles to Windows, Linux, macOS and WASM.” He said WebAssembly and WebGL made browser play possible; Ars Technica also reported those targets and browser capability. These statements describe the project as reported in 2023, not a guarantee that a working browser build or compatible executable is available today. Szablewski also said he would not provide executables in that post.
Is the rewrite complete, and can it be used commercially?
No: the project README describes unfinished work. It says, “Some things from the original game are not yet implemented in this rewrite.” Listed omissions and desired improvements include game-end animations, reverb for sound effects and music on tracks with more than four faces, collision behavior, dynamic lighting, frustum culling and save-data format work. Szablewski’s 2023 post likewise noted remaining bugs and features. The project README is the place to check for its current status, which may change.

The README answers the license question with “There is none.” It says the source code may or may not be based on the leaked PC ATI-Rage source and states: “In any case, you may NOT use this source code in a commercial release.” Szablewski separately wrote, “The legality of re-distributing the leaked source is questionable at best.” These are the project author’s statements, not an independent legal opinion; they do not establish a broader legal conclusion about the code or other ways of playing the game.

The rewrite and WipEout Omega Collection are different projects. Szablewski’s work revisits the original game using a codebase derived chiefly from the Windows ATI 3D Rage edition, and is unofficial. The Omega Collection is Sony’s official PS4 package combining WipEout HD, HD Fury and WipEout 2048—not a release of this rewrite or a remaster of the 1995 original. PlayStation’s 2017 retrospective says the collection reworked artwork and sound effects and added split-screen to 2048. PlayStation.Blog’s franchise retrospective describes the official collection.
