Where server.cfg goes and how it is loaded
The file belongs in the game installation’s left4dead2/cfg/ directory and must be named exactly server.cfg. A typical absolute path therefore ends in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. Keep the extension as .cfg; a file accidentally saved as server.cfg.txt will not be executed.

Launching the dedicated server with +exec server.cfg tells the engine to read that file during startup. Add a map and mode in the same launch command when you need a predictable initial game, for example:
+exec server.cfg +map c1m1_hotel coopThe executable and surrounding arguments differ between Windows and GNU/Linux installations, but these two parameters are the important part. The SteamCMD setup documentation uses application ID 222860 for the dedicated server and documents platform-specific installation paths. If a setting appears to do nothing, first verify that the running instance points to this directory and that its startup command actually contains +exec server.cfg. Multiple installations are a common reason for editing one configuration while launching another.

A practical baseline server.cfg
This starting point suits a public, mostly vanilla server. Change values that affect privacy, mods, or file consistency deliberately rather than copying them without deciding what community you want to run.

hostname: the browser-facing name
hostname is the name players see in the server browser and connection interfaces. Use a descriptive name that distinguishes the server’s region, rules, or community. It does not control authentication and changing it does not make a private server public.

rcon_password protects remote console access. Use a long, unique secret that is not reused for an account, web panel, or chat bot. Do not publish it in screenshots, paste sites, workshop descriptions, or public configuration snippets. Anyone who obtains it can issue administrative commands, so changing the server’s display name or player password is not a substitute for replacing a leaked RCON secret.
sv_password: joining the game
sv_password is the password ordinary players enter to join. An empty value (sv_password "") leaves the server open, while any non-empty value makes it private to people who know that password. Keep this distinction clear: RCON is for administration; sv_password is for player admission.

Public, LAN, and lobby-only behavior
Internet versus LAN mode
sv_lan 0 is the normal choice for an internet dedicated server. LAN mode changes how the server is visible and how authentication and connections are handled; it is intended for a local network rather than a publicly reachable instance. If remote players cannot discover or authenticate to a server that should be public, check this value before changing unrelated gameplay cvars.
Direct connections versus lobby-only joins
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 permits direct connections instead of requiring every player to arrive through a matchmaking lobby. Setting it to 1 creates lobby-only behavior. This cvar is separate from the player password: a server can be public but lobby-only, or private while still accepting direct connections from people who know the password.

Pausing
sv_pausable 0 prevents normal players from pausing the server. Enable pausing only when your group or event needs it and you have agreed on who may use it.

Map rotation and game-mode policy
mapcyclefile
mapcyclefile "mapcycle.txt" names the text file used for multiplayer map rotation. The filename is relative to the game’s configuration/content layout; keep the referenced file where the installation expects it and ensure each entry is valid for the mode you intend to run. A rotation file controls what comes next, not necessarily the first map after process startup.

Choosing the initial map and mode
Use a map command in the launch line when the first game must be deterministic. The command can include a mode, as in +map c1m1_hotel coop. The documented mode values include:

Do not assume that changing a mode-related line in server.cfg alone will select the first map. Put both the map and intended mode in the launch command when that distinction matters, then use mapcyclefile for subsequent rotation.

Cheats, file consistency, and modded servers
sv_cheats
Keep sv_cheats 0 on a normal public server. A nonzero value changes the trust model and can enable commands that are inappropriate for an open community. Reserve any different policy for a controlled test session and make that purpose explicit to players.
sv_consistency and sv_pure
sv_consistency and sv_pure influence whether clients with files that differ from the server’s expected content can join. The baseline sets sv_consistency 1 and leaves sv_pure 2 commented as an optional stricter policy. Vanilla servers generally want predictable client files; modded communities may need exceptions. Select a policy, document it, and test the actual mods and maps your players use. A stricter value can reject a legitimate mod, while a looser policy can make it harder to guarantee a consistent experience.

Logging and voice communication
Operational and ban logs
sv_logfile 1 enables server information logging, and sv_logbans 1 records bans. Leave both enabled when you need an audit trail for moderation or troubleshooting. Logs are useful only if the process has permission to write to its log directory and you know which installation is producing them.
Voice settings
sv_voiceenable 1 enables voice communication. With sv_alltalk 0, voice remains restricted by team; setting sv_alltalk 1 allows players on opposing teams to hear one another. Cross-team voice is a rule choice, not a requirement for voice to function.
Networking: what not to promise about tickrate
Valve Developer Community guidance states that the -tickrate command-line parameter is unavailable in newer builds of Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 and was disabled because changing tickrate can cause timing problems in some games. Do not advertise a reliable “100-tick” L4D2 server merely because a launch script contains that flag; the build may ignore it.
The same guidance identifies sv_minrate and sv_maxrate as controls for limiting client-requested data rates. Treat rate values as deployment-specific. Choose them alongside your host’s bandwidth and player mix, then verify the resulting behavior rather than copying figures from another game or engine version. No universal latency or performance number follows from this configuration alone.

Deployment workflow and update considerations
- Install the dedicated server files with SteamCMD application ID
222860, following the Windows or GNU/Linux path appropriate to your host. - Open the installation’s
left4dead2/cfg/directory and createserver.cfgwith the settings you intend to enforce. - Replace the sample RCON value with a unique secret, then decide whether
sv_passwordshould be empty or protected. - Confirm the public/LAN and lobby values match your access plan, and choose a consistency policy if you run mods.
- Start the correct instance with
+exec server.cfgand, when required,+mapplus the desired mode. - Check the console and generated logs to confirm that the file was read. If you maintain an update script, ensure it updates the same installation that your launch script starts.
Port selection and firewall rules are outside server.cfg, but they still determine whether an otherwise correct public server can be reached. A configuration file cannot make an instance accessible when the host is launching a different directory or blocking the selected port.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The name or password never changes
- Verify the exact path is
left4dead2/cfg/server.cfgand that the file is not hidden behind a second extension. - Inspect the launch command for
+exec server.cfg; editing the file without loading it has no effect. - Check that you edited the installation identified by the running process, especially if SteamCMD updates or multiple server copies exist.
- Restart the intended instance after changing startup-only assumptions, then confirm the value in the server console or browser.
Players can join only through a lobby
Set sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 and reload the configuration or restart the instance. Confirm that a separate launcher, per-map configuration, or administration tool is not setting the cvar back to 1.
Remote players cannot find the server
- Use
sv_lan 0for an internet server; LAN mode is not the public configuration. - Check that the host firewall and selected port permit inbound traffic.
- Make sure the public instance, not a local test copy, is the one running the edited file.
The wrong mode or first map starts
Put both values in the launch command, for example +map c1m1_hotel coop. Use mapcyclefile to control later rotation, and verify that the rotation file contains entries appropriate to the selected mode.
Modded clients are rejected
Review sv_consistency and any enabled sv_pure policy. Decide whether the rejection is intentional. If the community requires custom files, document the allowed content and test the policy with a clean client and a modded client before opening the server publicly.
Someone expects a higher tickrate
Explain that newer L4D2 builds do not provide a dependable -tickrate switch. Remove unsupported promises, then evaluate rate limits through sv_minrate and sv_maxrate as a separate, host-specific tuning exercise.
