First check whether the prompt is in Steam, the retail installer, or another service; then match the error message to the right fix. For a Steam retail-key error that persists after checking the platform and code, Steam directs buyers to the seller—not Steam Support—for help.
First, identify where the key is being entered
“Legitimate” and “accepted by Steam” are separate questions. A key can be genuine but intended for a retail installer or another platform rather than Steam. Check the packaging or purchase email for activation instructions before trying to redeem it again. Steam does not establish that every Quake 4 retail edition, region, or packaging generation has a Steam-compatible key.

Steam’s Retail CD Keys guidance explains that a retail key must be intended for Steam registration to work there.
Fix an “invalid CD key” error
- Check the platform instructions. Compare the prompt with the package or purchase email. If the key is not identified as a Steam key, try the intended activation method instead of Steam’s product-activation flow.
- Re-enter the code carefully. Steam calls out commonly confused characters: check 0 versus Q, D, or O; 1 versus I or L; O versus Q or D; B versus 8; and G versus 6. Use the entry method intended for the platform.
- If the key is meant for Steam and still fails, contact the seller. Steam’s invalid CD key guidance says to return to the seller for help. It also states: “Steam Support is not able to provide replacement CD keys for retail purchases.”
Keep the receipt and packaging available when contacting the seller. Do not post the full key in a public forum.

What a “duplicate key” error means
Steam defines a duplicate key as one that has already been redeemed to a Steam account; it cannot be registered again. If you may have redeemed it previously, check your Steam accounts and game library. If the key was sold as new and unused, contact the retailer with your proof of purchase. Steam’s duplicate key guidance explains the error and its limits.
Use Quake 4’s Steam Support route for game-specific help
The Quake 4 Steam Support page includes the option “I’m having trouble with my retail CD key.” Use it for account-specific next steps, while keeping the retailer receipt and key packaging. For a retail purchase, this route does not change Steam’s policy that it cannot replace retail keys; the seller remains the contact for an unresolved retail-key problem.

Before buying another copy or key
Do not assume that another boxed key will solve the problem: a used key may already be redeemed, and a retail key may not be intended for Steam. Before buying, ask the seller which platform the key activates on and check the return policy. The Quake 4 Steam listing is an official digital purchase option, but it is not a replacement retail key.
