If LEGO Horizon Adventures is crashing on your Steam Deck, start by installing SteamOS updates and restarting the device, then check for Desktop Mode apps that may be interfering. Steam lists the game as Steam Deck Verified, but that rating is not a diagnosis of an individual crash. The right next step depends on whether the failure happens during setup, at launch, or in the middle of play.
Why can LEGO Horizon Adventures crash on a Steam Deck?
A Verified rating means Steam considers the game to work well on Deck out of the box; it does not guarantee every installation or system configuration will be free of crashes. Steam also notes that compatibility reviews can evolve, so check the live Steam store listing for the current rating.
The available sources do not establish a single cause or universal fix for Steam Deck crashes in this game. Steam recommends general stability checks for Deck software, while the game’s Patch 1.04 notes describe an HDR lighting issue on Deck—not a general crash fix.
Try these fixes in order
- Install SteamOS updates and restart. Check for system updates, install any available update, and restart the Steam Deck. These are Steam Support’s first stability checks in its Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide.
- Check third-party Desktop Mode apps. If the crashes continue, disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode and restart the Deck. This can help determine whether software running alongside the game is contributing to the instability; it does not prove the game itself is at fault.
- Test a Steam Play compatibility tool. In your Steam Library, open LEGO Horizon Adventures’ Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool if needed, and test an available Proton version. Steam Support’s general advice is: “Try choosing the latest version of Proton.” This is a diagnostic suggestion for Steam apps, not a game-specific Proton recommendation or a guaranteed fix.
- Note exactly when it fails. Record whether the crash occurs on launch, during setup, in a particular scene, after changing a setting, or after an update. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether a troubleshooting step affected the problem.
If the problem happens during first-time setup
SteamDB’s indexed compatibility details say the game’s first-time setup requires an active internet connection. Connect the Deck to the internet to complete setup. The same archived details say single-player does not require internet after setup, so this requirement should not be confused with a need to stay online for ordinary offline play.

If the issue is blown-out HDR lighting, not a crash
The official Patch 1.04 notes, dated February 6, 2025, describe HDR lighting that may look blown out on Steam Deck. For that visual issue, the notes suggest either disabling HDR or setting maximum luminance to 4500 in the graphics settings. These are workarounds for HDR appearance; they are not documented fixes for an application crash.
Patch 1.04 also mentions general stability improvements, but does not say that all Steam Deck crashes are fixed. Its separate boot-crash note concerns certain 13th- and 14th-generation Intel PC CPUs and should not be treated as a Steam Deck remedy.

When to contact Steam Support
If the Deck still crashes after updates, a restart, checking third-party apps, and a compatibility test, follow Steam Support’s guidance to contact Steam Support. Include when the crash occurs and what you tried. A clear trigger—such as first launch, a specific scene, or a change in settings—gives support useful context for distinguishing a game problem from a system or compatibility issue.
