LEGO Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi (71438) recreates the look of a 16-bit game sprite in brick-built form. Mario sits on Yoshi’s back in a side-on pixel-art composition. LEGO describes it as a display model for adults rather than one of the modular interactive-course starter or expansion sets.

The model contains 1,215 pieces. The LEGO product listing gives its finished size as over 40 cm (15.5 inches) high, 26 cm (10 inches) wide and 11 cm (4 inches) deep. That height is the key planning issue: it needs a shelf with generous vertical clearance, not just enough surface area.
Its mechanisms are deliberately visible in use but unobtrusive when the model is at rest. A handle drives Yoshi’s running motion while Mario remains on his back, and a separate dial makes Yoshi’s tongue move in and out.
Piranha Plant is a standalone character sculpture
LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant (71426) builds the familiar enemy emerging from a brick-built pipe. Nintendo’s official store lists 540 pieces and dimensions of over 23 cm (9 inches) high, 11 cm (4.5 inches) wide and 17 cm (6.5 inches) deep.
The head, mouth, stalk and leaves are poseable, so the plant can face in different directions or be arranged with a more open or closed expression. This is physical articulation only: Nintendo states that the set has no digital play functions. It does not scan into the LEGO Super Mario app or behave like an interactive Mario, Luigi or Peach figure.

These are published product dimensions, not measurements from an independent comparative test. Allow extra clearance around either model for your preferred pose and for operating the moving parts. Piranha Plant’s official width is narrow, but spreading its leaves or turning the head can make it occupy more lateral space than the number suggests. Mario & Yoshi’s 11 cm depth is modest for its height, yet its tall silhouette can dominate a bookcase or desk.

The different proportions also change how each set reads in a room. Mario & Yoshi has the presence of a framed scene or arcade-era wall decoration; viewers see two characters and the implied action line between them. Piranha Plant behaves more like a three-dimensional ornament that can be grouped with other figures without taking over the whole display.
How the movement and interaction work
Mario & Yoshi’s two manual controls
- Use the handle to run Yoshi. Moving the handle drives the mechanism so Yoshi appears to run with Mario riding on his back. The motion is hand-powered; there is no motor or battery requirement stated for the set.
- Turn the dial to move the tongue. The separate dial makes Yoshi’s tongue pop in and out, echoing the in-game action.
- Scan the Action Tag if you own a compatible figure. The included Action Tag can trigger a digital interaction with a compatible LEGO Mario, Luigi or Peach figure from a separate set. Those electronic figures are not included in 71438, so the tag is an optional extension rather than a complete digital play system in the box.
Nintendo quoted Carl Merriam, a senior designer on LEGO Super Mario, describing the design goal: “In this model, we wanted to capture the original sprite animation from Super Mario World. This meant re-creating the pixel art in LEGO bricks and then adding a mechanism to make Yoshi run with Caped Mario riding on his back. AND if that wasn’t enough fun, we also added a dial to make Yoshi’s tongue pop in and out – just like in the game!” The quotation appears in Nintendo’s announcement at Nintendo’s Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi announcement.
Piranha Plant’s poseable sculpture
Piranha Plant has no equivalent handle, dial or Action Tag. Instead, you manually reposition the head, open or close the mouth, bend the stalk and angle the leaves. The appeal is finding a stance that suits your shelf: an alert, upright plant; a sideways glance; or a more animated open-mouth pose.
That freedom comes with a handling consideration. In its independent review, Brick Fanatics described the model as top-heavy when repositioned and advised care while posing it. This is a reviewer’s practical assessment, not a manufacturer warning or proof that every copy will tip. Move the model by supporting the pipe and stalk, and check that the base is flat before leaving it in a new pose.
Pixel-art nostalgia versus character recognition
Why Mario & Yoshi feels like a game scene
The 71438 model is built around the visual language of Super Mario World: squared edges, limited-color sprite shading and a side-on action pose. Its appeal depends on recognizing the original game and appreciating how a two-dimensional animation has been translated into a physical mechanism. The running handle is not an unrelated gimmick; it is the display’s explanation for why Yoshi and Mario are arranged as they are.

Because the model depicts two characters, it has more visual information to discover from a distance. At close range, the movement gives the display a second mode: static pixel art when untouched, then an animated scene when someone turns the controls.
Why Piranha Plant works as a simple icon
Piranha Plant is instantly identifiable even to someone who does not collect the wider LEGO Super Mario range. The pipe creates a clear base, the red-and-white head supplies the focal point, and the leaves add asymmetry. Its poseability lets you refresh the display without rebuilding the model.
The trade-off is that there is no built-in narrative motion. Once you have selected a pose, the set remains a sculpture until you adjust it again. That makes it quieter and less demanding on a shelf shared with books, consoles or other collectibles.
Build scale and what the piece counts mean
At 1,215 pieces, Mario & Yoshi is more than twice the size of Piranha Plant’s 540-piece build. The counts communicate relative construction complexity and the amount of material in each model, but they do not establish an exact build time, difficulty rating or comparative durability. No independent timed build or durability test is documented for this comparison.
The larger count in 71438 is used for both the pixel-art surfaces and the internal linkages that transfer movement from the handle and dial. Piranha Plant concentrates its pieces on shaping the pipe, articulated stalk and character head. If you enjoy engineering mechanisms and a longer construction project, the larger model offers more of that material; if you prefer a focused sculpture, the 540-piece set is the more compact commitment.

Display planning: shelves, desks and cabinets
Measure vertical clearance for Mario & Yoshi
- Measure from the shelf surface to the obstruction above it, allowing more than 40 cm for the model’s stated height.
- Leave hand room in front or at the side of the handle so the running mechanism can be demonstrated without lifting the model.
- Check that the shelf can be viewed from the front; the pixel-art composition is designed primarily as a facing display.
- Keep the model where it will not be struck by a door, chair back or frequently moved controller cable.
Plan depth and pose for Piranha Plant
- Reserve at least the listed 17 cm depth, then add space for the direction in which the head and leaves are posed.
- Place the pipe on a level surface and support the base when changing the stalk or head angle.
- If the plant feels unstable in a dramatic pose, lower the head, bring the stalk closer to vertical or choose a pose with the leaves closer to the centerline.
- Use a cabinet shelf or low-traffic desk location if people regularly brush past the display.
Neither product’s published dimensions include a recommended safety margin, so these are practical setup precautions rather than official requirements.
Price, availability and value
Do not use an old launch price as a current buying rule. Brick Fanatics reported Piranha Plant’s November 2023 launch prices as $59.99 in the United States, £57.99 in the United Kingdom and €64.99 in the European Union. Those figures describe the launch period and are not evidence of today’s price, discount, stock status or retirement status.
Check the listing for your own country immediately before buying, and compare the final delivered price rather than converting currencies from another region. Mario & Yoshi’s larger piece count and mechanisms do not, by themselves, prove better value; the right comparison is the current price for each set against the display experience you actually want. Buying from a different region without checking the final total
Regional currency, taxes, shipping and retailer discounts can change the effective price. Use the local product listing rather than treating the historical 2023 launch figures as a benchmark.
Ignoring balance after posing
A dramatic Piranha Plant pose can shift its center of gravity. Follow the reviewer’s caution, support the model while adjusting it and test the final stance before displaying it near the edge of a shelf.

Choose Mario & Yoshi (71438) when you want the more ambitious display: a 40-plus-centimeter pixel-art centerpiece, a recognizable Super Mario World scene, two hand-operated movements and optional interaction with a separately owned compatible figure.
