These are different interpretations of a companion, not three versions of the same system. The available official material supports that broad contrast, but it does not justify a mechanics leaderboard or precise Skyrim follower statistics.
What “companion” means in these three RPGs
Comparisons become misleading when every ally is treated as the same feature. In one game, a companion is primarily an individual who travels with your player character. In another, companions are party members with personal agendas that respond to what you say and do. In a third, they are members of a larger hero team that carries a regional, campaign-scale story.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters more than a simple count of characters. Ask four questions instead:
- How many allies are present with the player, and how are they controlled?
- Do companions present individual goals and opinions, or mainly support the player’s adventure?
- Can player choices alter relationships and story outcomes?
- How do companions fit into exploration and combat across the world?
The evidence available for this comparison answers those questions unevenly. Larian gives a clear developer description of Baldur’s Gate 3’s intended relationship design. Electronic Arts gives a high-level description of Dragon Age: Inquisition’s multi-region world and hero team. Steam confirms the Skyrim product identity, but the accessible source used here does not document Skyrim follower mechanics. Where a detail is not established, it is marked as such rather than filled in from memory.

At a glance: the kind of companion experience each game promises
| Game | What the reviewed evidence supports | Best fit for | What is not established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | The central game and product identity are verified by its Steam listing. It is the reference point for readers who already know an open-world, follower-focused adventure. | Players who want to compare a familiar individual-follower experience with more explicitly party-driven RPGs. | No accessible authoritative source in this comparison establishes follower limits, affinity rules, unique dialogue totals, or other exact mechanics. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Larian says companions have their own personalities, goals and motivations. The developer describes relationships as reactive to the player’s identity, choices, dialogue and affiliations; camp is a place to rest, talk and build relationships. Community reference pages document approval mechanics and possible consequences. | Players who value character-specific reactions, party conversations and relationships that can change because of their decisions. | Approval thresholds and detailed outcomes come from community-maintained references and can change with patches. The reviewed material does not establish a fair numerical comparison with Skyrim. |
| Dragon Age: Inquisition | Electronic Arts describes an open-world RPG spread across multiple regions in which the player leads a team of heroes. Its product description says bonds can form and break during the campaign. | Players drawn to a party-led story that moves through a broad, multi-region setting. | The reviewed official page does not specify banter frequency, an approval interface, tactical-command details or other fine-grained companion mechanics. |
Skyrim: the baseline for an individual-follower comparison
Skyrim is the titular reference point, but the accessible evidence for this article is deliberately narrow: Steam verifies the game’s title and product identity, not its follower system. That means a responsible comparison should begin with your own priorities and experience rather than inventing exact limits or statistics.
What you can safely use as your baseline
If you have played Skyrim, you already know what you mean when you say “a Skyrim companion”: an ally who can be part of your personal journey through the game’s world. The useful comparison is therefore experiential. Did you value having one recognizable travel partner beside your character? Did you want that ally to stay in the background while you made the important decisions? Or did you wish the party would argue, approve, disapprove and redirect the story more often?
Those are preference questions, not claims about undocumented follower counts or hidden rules. This article does not state a maximum number of followers, an affinity formula, a universal inventory behavior, or a fixed quantity of follower dialogue for Skyrim because the reviewed authoritative source does not establish them.

Why Skyrim can feel different from party-first RPGs
The key contrast is conceptual. A Skyrim player can treat the companion as one element of a largely self-directed open-world routine: exploration, quests and role-playing remain organized around the player character. In a party-based game, the group itself is often a second protagonist. The question is not whether one model is objectively deeper; it is whether you want your ally to reinforce your adventure or actively negotiate it.
Questions to ask before switching games
- Do you want your character’s decisions to remain the clear center of the story?
- Would frequent party debate make exploration more interesting or more distracting?
- Are you looking for a companion who accompanies your route, or several heroes whose personal arcs compete for attention?
Your answers provide a more honest Skyrim comparison than a made-up feature checklist.
Baldur’s Gate 3: companions as reactive personalities
Baldur’s Gate 3 offers the clearest documented contrast in the source material. In Larian’s Community Update #7, lead writer Sarah Baylus introduces companions as characters with independent inner lives. The article states: Each of your companions have their own personalities, goals, and motivations.
Larian also describes its design aim this way: We’ve tried to create an authentic, reactive relationship system where characters act and react like people.
These are developer statements about intended design, not an independent quality score, but they explain why the game’s companions are often discussed as a relationship system rather than merely combat helpers.

Personality, goals and motivation
The practical implication is that a companion is not simply a slot beside the player character. Larian says who the player is and what the player does shapes relationships. Dialogue choices, affiliations and major decisions can therefore change how a party member responds. The companion’s goals are part of the interaction, not just flavor text attached to a recruitable ally.
This makes party composition a role-playing decision. You may choose someone because their worldview complements your character, because their reactions create productive conflict, or because you want to pursue that person’s story. The system is built to make those choices legible through conversation and response.
Camp as the relationship hub
Larian describes camp as a place to rest and recover, talk with companions and build relationships. That creates a deliberate rhythm: exploration and danger happen in the world, while camp gives the party space to process what happened. A player who enjoys checking in with characters, revisiting conversations and watching relationships develop will find this structure more central than a model in which an ally mainly follows the player between objectives.
Camp should not be treated as proof that every relationship has a guaranteed outcome. It is the setting Larian identifies for conversation and relationship building; the exact result still depends on choices, character circumstances and the version of the game being played.
Approval and consequence references
Community-maintained companion and approval pages document approval mechanics and possible relationship consequences in more detail. Those references are useful when you need a specific threshold or outcome, but they are not the same kind of evidence as Larian’s design article. Patch changes can also make a previously accurate threshold or sequence stale. Use such pages as version-sensitive mechanics references, not as timeless specifications.

If your favorite part of Skyrim is choosing where to go and how to role-play your character, Baldur’s Gate 3 may feel more demanding because companions bring their own positions into the party. If you wanted Skyrim allies to comment more often, remember your decisions and develop relationships that could help or complicate your plans, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest fit of the three based on the documented design goals.

Dragon Age: Inquisition: a team across multiple regions
Electronic Arts presents Dragon Age: Inquisition as an open-world RPG across multiple regions in which the player leads a team of heroes. The same product description says bonds can form and break during the campaign. That supports a party-led framing: the player is directing a group, and relationships are part of a long journey through a broad setting.
The team is the unit of the adventure
Where Skyrim is useful as an individual-follower reference, Inquisition is useful as a team reference. The official description puts the player in charge of a hero group moving through several regions. This suggests a campaign in which companions are connected to the overall expedition, not merely temporary additions to one character’s route.
“Open world” here should be read in the qualified sense used by the publisher: a broad game world divided across multiple regions. It does not establish that every region is seamless, nor does it provide a one-to-one mechanical comparison with Skyrim’s world.

Bonds that can form and break
The statement that bonds may form and break tells you that relationships are not presented as permanently fixed. It does not, by itself, specify an approval meter, banter schedule, romance rules, or the exact choices that trigger a change. Those details should not be imported from Baldur’s Gate 3 or assumed from another Dragon Age title.
Why choose Inquisition over the other two
Inquisition is the natural choice if you want the story to feel like a coordinated campaign led by a cast of heroes. You may prefer that framing to Skyrim’s more individually centered baseline, while finding Baldur’s Gate 3’s highly reactive relationship emphasis either appealing or too conversation-heavy. The evidence supports that broad fit, not a claim that Inquisition has more or better companion depth.
How the companion models differ by the questions players actually ask
How many allies travel with you, and who controls them?
| Question | Skyrim | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Dragon Age: Inquisition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is a precise party or follower count established by the reviewed sources? | No. The accessible Steam evidence verifies the product, not follower mechanics. | No precise count is stated in the reviewed official material. | No precise team size is stated on the reviewed official page. |
| What framing is supported? | An individual-follower point of reference for your existing Skyrim experience. | Companions are personalities with goals and motivations whose relationships react to player behavior. | The player leads a team of heroes across multiple regions. |
| What should not be assumed? | Do not transfer party limits or approval rules from another game. | Do not treat community-documented thresholds as permanent across patches. | Do not assume specific tactical controls or approval interfaces from the high-level product description. |
The important choice is not a number. It is whether you want the game to feel like your character’s journey with an ally, a conversation-driven party, or a campaign commanded by a hero team.

How strongly do companions express opinions?
Baldur’s Gate 3 has the strongest explicit evidence: Larian names personalities, goals and motivations and describes characters acting and reacting like people. Inquisition’s publisher says bonds can form and break, which supports relationship movement but leaves the expression of opinions unspecified. Skyrim’s accessible source does not establish a comparable system, so no fair ranking is possible.

For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian explicitly connects relationships to who the player is, what the player does, dialogue and affiliations. Community references add approval and possible consequences, with patch-era qualifications. For Inquisition, EA’s wording supports bonds that form and break but does not document the mechanism or outcome range. For Skyrim, this comparison does not assert a rule because the available authoritative evidence does not cover it.
How do companions relate to open-world exploration?
Skyrim is the open-world baseline named by the title, so use your own play style to judge how much you want a follower integrated into free exploration. EA explicitly describes Inquisition as spanning multiple regions and being led by a team. Larian’s cited material focuses on companions and camp; it does not establish that Baldur’s Gate 3 should be classified as an open-world game, so this article does not make that claim.
What role does combat play in the comparison?
The reviewed sources do not provide a like-for-like account of combat control for all three games. They therefore cannot support claims about which title offers smarter companions, deeper tactics, or better artificial intelligence. Treat combat as a secondary preference question: do you want an ally folded into your established Skyrim routine, a party whose relationships are part of the role-playing loop, or a team serving a multi-region campaign?

Choose Skyrim as your reference point if you want personal freedom first
- Your main attraction is exploring and role-playing through your own character’s decisions.
- You prefer a companion to support that journey without the article needing to promise a party-wide relationship simulation.
- You are comparing new games against a familiar open-world routine rather than seeking a documented approval system.
This recommendation is intentionally preference-based. The available source confirms the game identity, not a list of follower mechanics.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose Baldur’s Gate 3 if reactions and relationships are the point
- You want companions presented as people with their own personalities, goals and motivations.
- You enjoy dialogue and affiliations that can influence relationships.
- You like returning to camp to talk, recover and develop bonds.
- You are comfortable with party members whose views may complicate your preferred plan.
The strongest evidence for this fit comes from Larian’s own description of the intended system. Consult current community references when you need patch-specific approval details.

Choose Dragon Age: Inquisition if you want a campaign team
- You want to lead a group of heroes through a world presented as multiple regions.
- You like the idea that bonds can form and break during a long campaign.
- You prefer a party-led narrative frame without assuming the specific approval and banter mechanics documented for another game.
EA’s product description supports this broad team-and-regions fit. It does not justify a claim that Inquisition’s companion system is deeper, shallower or mechanically identical to either comparison point.
How to make a fair comparison while you play
- Write down your desired companion role. Decide whether you want a travel partner, a reactive relationship, or a campaign teammate before judging a new game.
- Separate design intent from observed behavior. Larian’s statements describe what the developers aimed to build. Community pages describe reported mechanics and can change with patches. EA’s page supplies a high-level product frame.
- Track consequences, not just conversations. Notice whether a decision changes who speaks to you, which relationships progress, or how the group’s story develops. Do not infer a hidden system from a single line of dialogue.
- Record the game version. Approval thresholds and detailed outcomes in a live-updated RPG may differ from older guides. Note your platform and patch when consulting community references.
- Judge the loop you repeat. Ask whether you spend more time exploring with an ally, talking at camp, or moving a team through regional objectives. That repeated rhythm is more useful than a generic “best companions” label.
Evidence limits you should keep in mind
This comparison intentionally avoids several popular but unsupported claims. No named statistic in the reviewed material measures companion quality, player preference, sales or relationship depth. There is no sourced basis here for ranking the three games by follower count, dialogue volume, approval complexity, banter frequency or tactical intelligence.
The sources also differ in authority and purpose:
- Steam’s Skyrim listing verifies the game title and product identity; it is not a follower-mechanics guide.
- Larian’s Community Update #7 is a developer-authored explanation of intended companion and relationship design. Its quotations should be read as design aims.
- Community companion and approval pages for Baldur’s Gate 3 provide detailed mechanics references, but they are maintained by the community and may change as patches change the game.
- Electronic Arts’ Dragon Age: Inquisition page supports the multi-region, team-led description and the statement that bonds can form and break. It does not provide a detailed comparison with Skyrim.
Keeping those boundaries visible prevents a common mistake: transferring Baldur’s Gate 3’s approval vocabulary to Skyrim or Inquisition, or treating Inquisition’s broad team description as proof of a particular tactical or dialogue system.
Bottom line: pick the relationship style, not a winner
Skyrim remains the useful individual-follower reference for players who want a companion folded into a self-directed open-world adventure. Baldur’s Gate 3 is the clearest choice for companions who are explicitly designed around personalities, goals, motivations and reactions to the player, with camp serving as a relationship hub. Dragon Age: Inquisition is the fit for a multi-region campaign led by a team whose bonds can form and break.
None of those descriptions proves an objective winner. They identify three different answers to the same question: what should an ally contribute to your RPG? Start with the answer you want, then choose the game whose documented design matches it.
