Pick the PlayStation set for a 1990s gaming tribute
The PlayStation model focuses on the original console and its first controller. Its functional Open and Power buttons make the front of the build interactive, while its small scenes nod to Gran Turismo (released in 1997) and Ape Escape (released in 1999). At 26 cm wide, it also takes up less shelf space than the Atari’s 33 cm-wide console, based on LEGO’s published dimensions.
Pick the Atari set for an 1980s console showcase
The Atari 2600 build includes the console, joystick, three cartridges representing Asteroids, Adventure, and Centipede, and a holder for the cartridges. Its three game-inspired builds and hidden room vignette give the set several display details beyond the console replica. It is the larger model by LEGO’s listed dimensions and has 621 more pieces than the PlayStation set.

Which one makes the better gift?
Base the choice on which console and games the recipient remembers or enjoys, not on which box has more pieces. Both sets are marked 18+, and both are designed as detailed display builds. For a recipient who favors 1990s PlayStation nostalgia or has limited shelf space, the PlayStation is the more fitting option. For someone drawn to Atari’s 1980s games and a broader set of themed display elements, the Atari is the closer match.

LEGO’s US PlayStation page lists general availability beginning October 4, 2026. Confirm the set is actually available when you shop; the announcement describes a US price of $179.99. LEGO labels the Atari 2600 a retired product. Its displayed $239.99 is not a current resale quote, and availability from other sellers can vary.

The two official prices refer to different release periods: LEGO announced the PlayStation at $179.99 in the US in 2026, while the Atari’s original US recommended retail price was $239.99 at its 2022 launch (LEGO Atari launch announcement). They are not a like-for-like comparison of what either set costs today. For a retired set, check the seller, condition, completeness, and asking price before purchasing.
