LEGO announced both on June 2, 2026, with launch-market availability beginning August 1. The latter is the official name—not “Gengar’s Ghost Challenge”—and both sets are SMART Play Compatible, meaning their interactive functions require a SMART Brick that is not included.
What LEGO announced
LEGO’s June 2, 2026 announcement identified two new Pokémon builds. The informal “Gengar’s Ghost Challenge” wording does not match LEGO’s product name: the official set is Cubone and Gengar’s Spooky Showdown. These are announced products, not merely leaked designs.

Piece counts and US prices are LEGO’s announced figures for these 2026 sets, not current retailer prices or independent market estimates. LEGO said availability would begin August 1, 2026 in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, and Australia, through LEGO.com, LEGO Stores, and select retailers in those markets. That launch announcement does not confirm stock at any seller today. LEGO’s June 2026 announcement
What each set includes
Mewtwo’s Lab Break (72163)
This 605-piece, age-10+ build stages Mewtwo breaking out of a laboratory tank. LEGO lists an adjustable tank, information screen, Master Ball, and Mewtwo figure; the figure stands over 7.5 inches (19 cm) tall. The set includes one SMART Tag.

- COMPATIBLE WITH LEGO SMART BRICK (NOT INCLUDED) – The LEGO Pokémon SMART Play: Mewtwo’s Lab Break (72163) building toy is a LEGO SMART Play Compatible Set featuring a Legendary Pokémon, a SMART Tag and a buildable Master Ball
- POKÉMON BUILDING TOY – Turn the dial at the front of the chamber to capture the iconic moment where the posable Mewtwo figure breaks out of the tank and uses its psychic-type powers to escape
- YOU ARE THE TRAINER NOW – The buildable Mewtwo figure includes a hidden SMART Tag that can activate a SMART Brick (not included) to trigger unique sounds and lights as it senses the tag and reacts to kids' movements
- INTERACTIVE MEWTWO MODEL – Kids can have fun creating their own pretend play adventures as they pose the brick-built Mewtwo toy, or add a SMART Brick (not included) to the Legendary Pokémon to see how it responds to their movements with SMART Play interactions
- HOW TO ACTIVATE YOUR SET – Add a LEGO SMART Brick from an All-in-One Set (each set sold separately) to enable interactive play functionality. SMART Bricks are not available to purchase as a stand-alone product
Cubone and Gengar’s Spooky Showdown (72166)
This 782-piece, age-8+ set is built around a treasure challenge featuring Cubone and Gengar. It includes two Pokémon figures and four SMART Tags. LEGO says the Gengar build measures over 4.5 inches (11 cm) high.
Do these sets include the SMART Brick?
No. Both products are SMART Play Compatible sets, not All-in-One sets. They include SMART Tags, but LEGO says compatible sets do not include a SMART Brick. The Brick is what activates interactive sounds and lights; the official Gengar set page explains that an All-in-One set’s SMART Brick is sold with that set. LEGO says SMART Bricks are not sold as standalone products. LEGO’s Cubone and Gengar’s Spooky Showdown product page
Rank #2
- COMPATIBLE WITH LEGO SMART BRICK (NOT INCLUDED) – The LEGO Pokémon SMART Play: Cubone and Gengar’s Spooky Showdown (72166) building toy is a LEGO SMART Play Compatible Set featuring 2 Pokémon figures, 4 SMART Tags and a buildable Ultra Ball
- YOU ARE THE TRAINER NOW – Kids can train their Pokémon by hitting the target on the tree, then prepare for battle by placing a Pokémon on the platform and hitting both targets with the Ultra Ball to knock them over and reveal a treasure chest below
- INTERACTIVE POKÉMON BUILDING TOY – The buildable Cubone and Gengar figures, tree and battle platform each feature a SMART Tag that can activate a SMART Brick (not included) to trigger unique sounds and lights as it senses each tag and reacts to kids' movements
- 2 POKÉMON FIGURES – Wiggle Gengar’s tongue using a lever, check out Cubone wearing its familiar skull and add a SMART Brick (not included) to experience 2 interactive king of the hill and ghost challenges
- HOW TO ACTIVATE YOUR SET – Add a LEGO SMART Brick from an All-in-One Set (each set sold separately) to enable interactive play functionality. SMART Bricks are not available to purchase as a stand-alone product
You can still build and play with either set without the Brick-enabled interactive functions. The distinction matters if you are choosing a set specifically for its sound-and-light interactions: these two are compatible with the system, but do not supply the component that enables those features.
How the two sets differ
Mewtwo’s Lab Break is the lower-priced of the two announced US offerings and focuses on a laboratory escape. The Gengar set costs more in LEGO’s announced US pricing, has more pieces, and centers on a treasure challenge with Cubone and Gengar. Neither comparison establishes better value; that depends on the build and characters you want, the current selling price, and whether you already have access to a SMART Brick through an All-in-One set.

Where these fit in the LEGO Pokémon line
The SMART Play-compatible sets are a later expansion of the collaboration. The Pokémon Company International announced the first LEGO Pokémon collection in January 2026 and said the first sets would launch February 27, 2026. The June announcement added these two sets to the lineup. The Pokémon Company International’s January 2026 announcement
