Choose the LEGO Technic Peugeot 9X8 (42156) if you want a compact 1:10 endurance-racing model inspired by the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a represented hybrid system and glow-in-the-dark elements. Choose the Ferrari Daytona SP3 (42143) if your priority is a much larger 1:8 display car, a 3,778-piece build, and a V12 engine paired with an 8-speed sequential gearbox. Both are 18+ adult display sets, and LEGO currently marks both products as retired. That makes seller, condition, completeness, regional availability and return terms as important as the model’s specifications.
Peugeot 9X8 vs. Ferrari Daytona SP3 at a glance
The two cars occupy different corners of LEGO Technic’s premium display range. The Peugeot is the smaller, endurance-racing choice; the Ferrari is the larger road-car showcase with more than twice the pieces. The table uses LEGO’s published specifications, not independent measurements or owner surveys.

For a quick decision, match the set to the story you want on your shelf. Le Mans, hybrid technology and a 50 cm footprint point to the Peugeot. Ferrari styling, the largest model and a denser drivetrain display point to the Daytona SP3.
What the Peugeot 9X8 represents
An endurance-racing subject rather than a road-going supercar
Set 42156 recreates the Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar at 1:10 scale. LEGO positions it as an adult model commemorating the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That identity matters: the car’s appeal is tied to long-distance racing, pit-lane engineering and the visual language of a competition prototype, not to a luxury road-car interior.

- LEGO FERRARI MODEL CAR KIT – Builders ages 10+ can create the legendary Technic Ferrari FXX K with authentic details and working mechanical features
- AUTHENTIC RACE CAR DETAILS – This supercar building set features working butterfly doors, opening hood, and an engine cover that reveals the detailed V12 engine underneath

The model includes a representation of the hybrid system, combining a V6 engine with an electric motor. “Representation” is the important qualification: LEGO’s product information describes the modeled components, but it does not claim that the assembled set reproduces a functioning automotive hybrid powertrain. The same official specification lists specially designed suspension, steering and opening doors.
Glow-in-the-dark details
Glow-in-the-dark elements give the Peugeot a distinctive display feature that the Ferrari specification does not list. They are especially appropriate to a Le Mans theme, where the real event runs through night conditions, but the product information does not quantify brightness, duration or charging behavior. Treat the luminous parts as a visual accent rather than a lighting system.
You can review the exact regional listing and its current status on LEGO’s Peugeot 9X8 42156 product page.
What the Ferrari Daytona SP3 represents
A larger road-car display centerpiece
Set 42143 is a 1:8 Ferrari Daytona SP3, described by LEGO as part of its Technic Ultimate Car Concept series. Its 3,778 pieces make it the substantially larger project of the pair, and its 59 cm length requires more display depth than the Peugeot’s 50 cm. The extra size is not merely cosmetic: the model’s feature list concentrates on the mechanical theater associated with a high-end road car.
V12 and sequential gearbox
The Ferrari has a V12 engine with moving pistons and a working 8-speed sequential gearbox operated by a paddle shifter. It also includes steering, shock absorbers, butterfly doors and a removable roof. These are modeled mechanisms intended to be operated on the finished display model; LEGO’s listing does not provide an independent durability rating, performance test or measured operating life.
The Ferrari’s official product page is LEGO Technic Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143. The US page displayed a price of $449.99 when accessed for this comparison, but that regional figure is not a universal current price or a prediction of what a retired set costs on the secondary market.
Scale, dimensions and display planning
How big is the LEGO Ferrari Daytona SP3?
LEGO lists the completed Ferrari as over 14 cm high, 59 cm long and 25 cm wide. In practical terms, reserve a display surface at least that large, with additional clearance for handling the butterfly doors, removing the roof and operating the steering or gearbox controls. The stated measurements describe the model’s published envelope; they do not include a custom stand, packaging or extra space for opening components.
How the Peugeot fits beside it
The Peugeot is listed at over 13 cm high, 50 cm long and 22 cm wide. It is only slightly lower than the Ferrari but nine centimeters shorter and three centimeters narrower. A shelf that comfortably holds the Peugeot may still be too shallow for the Daytona SP3, particularly if you want access to its removable roof and doors rather than displaying it as a static object.
| Planning question | Peugeot 9X8 | Ferrari Daytona SP3 |
|---|---|---|
| Length to allow for the model | At least 50 cm, according to LEGO’s “over” measurement | At least 59 cm, according to LEGO’s “over” measurement |
| Width to allow for the model | At least 22 cm | At least 25 cm |
| Height to allow for the model | At least 13 cm | At least 14 cm |
| Scale relationship | 1:10 | 1:8 |
Because both figures are given as “over” a measurement, do not design a tight cubby around the exact number. Leave room to lift and turn the model safely, and verify the completed footprint if your cabinet has a hard interior limit.
Mechanical features compared
Peugeot: hybrid theme, suspension and race-car access
- Hybrid-system representation: a modeled V6 engine and electric motor.
- Chassis behavior: specially designed suspension and steering are listed features.
- Body access: opening doors.
- Display detail: glow-in-the-dark elements.
This combination suits a reader who wants the engineering story of an endurance prototype. It also gives the model a clear talking point beyond its exterior shape: the hybrid system is visible as a representation of the technology associated with the real car.

Ferrari: drivetrain theater and removable bodywork
- Engine: a V12 with moving pistons.
- Transmission: a working 8-speed sequential gearbox operated by a paddle shifter.
- Chassis: steering and shock absorbers.
- Body access: butterfly doors and a removable roof.
The Ferrari therefore emphasizes a sequence of mechanisms that can be demonstrated at the display shelf: shift through the gearbox, show the piston movement, open the doors and remove the roof. LEGO’s published list establishes the presence of these features; it does not rank one set as objectively more reliable, easier or more enjoyable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Piece count, scale and what they do not tell you
The Peugeot contains 1,775 pieces, while the Ferrari contains 3,778. The Ferrari therefore has 2,003 more pieces and a little more than twice the Peugeot’s count. That difference is a useful indicator of project scope and finished-model size, but it is not a build-time guarantee. Neither official product listing supplies a comparable assembly-time estimate, an independent difficulty score or a stability test.
Both products carry LEGO’s 18+ label. That label identifies the intended adult audience; it is not a promise that every builder will find one model easier than the other. The mechanical functions, scale and piece count are objective selection criteria, while comfort with long builds, sorting parts and troubleshooting is personal.
Which LEGO Technic car should you buy?
Choose the Peugeot 9X8 if these priorities sound like you
- You follow the 24 Hours of Le Mans or prefer endurance-racing prototypes to road cars.
- You want a 1:10 model with a 50 cm published length rather than the Ferrari’s 59 cm footprint.
- The hybrid-system concept, V6-and-electric-motor representation and glow-in-the-dark details are central to the appeal.
- You prefer the lower 1,775-piece scope, while understanding that piece count alone does not establish build duration.
- Your display space is limited and the Peugeot’s narrower 22 cm published width is easier to accommodate.
These are feature-based recommendations, not reports from hands-on testing. The official Peugeot information does not establish that it is easier, faster or more stable than the Ferrari.
Choose the Ferrari Daytona SP3 if these priorities sound like you
- You want Ferrari road-car styling and the largest display presence of the two.
- You have room for a model listed at over 59 cm long, 25 cm wide and 14 cm high.
- The 3,778-piece count and 1:8 scale are part of the attraction.
- You specifically want a moving-piston V12 and a working 8-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifter.
- Butterfly doors, a removable roof, steering and shock absorbers matter more to you than the Peugeot’s endurance-racing theme.
The Ferrari’s larger size and feature set make it the natural pick for a centerpiece display, but LEGO does not publish an independent comparison proving that it offers greater enjoyment or superior construction.
If you are choosing on subject alone
Use the real car’s identity as the tie-breaker. The Peugeot is about a Le Mans hybrid hypercar; the Ferrari is about a limited-edition road supercar. Neither subject is a “better” Technic choice in isolation. The right model is the one whose racing history, design language or mechanical story you will still want to display after the novelty of the build has passed.
Retired status changes how you should shop
LEGO’s current regional listings mark both 42156 and 42143 as retired. Retirement means you should not assume that a new copy can be ordered directly from LEGO in every market. It also means listings can differ sharply by country, seller, seal condition, completeness and shipping cost.
Do not treat the displayed regional prices as a direct comparison
The French Peugeot page displayed €199.99 when accessed on October 13, 2026, while the US Ferrari page displayed $449.99. Those figures are tied to different currencies, regions and product pages, and they are not a like-for-like measure of current resale value. They should not be presented as universal prices or used to predict what a retired set will cost from a particular seller.
Use this checklist before paying
- Confirm the set number. Match the listing to Peugeot 42156 or Ferrari 42143; similarly named Technic cars are not interchangeable.
- Ask whether it is complete. For a used set, request confirmation that all parts, tires, manuals and model-specific elements are included.
- Separate sealed from assembled. A sealed box, an opened-but-complete box and a previously built model are different purchases. Ask for photographs of seals, bags and the finished car.
- Inspect condition. Check for yellowing, dust, stressed panels, missing stickers, damaged packaging and parts replaced with non-original colors.
- Calculate the delivered cost. Include shipping, taxes, import charges and any marketplace fees rather than comparing headline prices.
- Read the return terms. A retired, high-piece-count set is expensive to correct after delivery if the seller will not accept a return for missing or damaged parts.
- Check seller reputation. Prioritize transaction history, clear photographs and an explicit parts-completeness policy over an unusually low price.
LEGO’s product pages may expose links for replacement parts, but the available information here does not verify current eligibility for every retired set or every region. Treat replacement support as something to confirm before buying a used copy, not as a guaranteed remedy.

When both models remain available at prices you can afford, work through the following order rather than starting with the seller’s marketing language.

- GIFT IDEA FOR KIDS – This collectible car toy makes a fun gift for boys and girls ages 9 years old and up who love LEGO building sets and high speed racing action
- Choose the subject: Le Mans endurance hybrid (Peugeot) or Ferrari road supercar (Daytona SP3).
- Measure the shelf: reject any option that cannot fit its published length and width with operating clearance.
- Choose the mechanism: hybrid-system representation and glow elements, or V12 pistons and sequential gearbox.
- Set a project ceiling: compare 1,775 pieces with 3,778, while remembering that no official build-time comparison is supplied.
- Audit the listing: retired status makes completeness, condition, seller terms and delivered price decisive.
- Buy the exact number: verify 42156 or 42143 on the box, listing and photographs before checkout.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: buying the larger Ferrari because it appears more substantial, then discovering that its 59 cm length or retired-market price does not suit your room or budget.
Ferrari Daytona SP3 launch context
The LEGO Group announced the Ferrari model on May 24, 2022. The announcement said LEGO Stores would receive it from June 1, 2022, with many retailers following from August 1, 2022. Those are historical launch dates, not evidence of present stock.
“This model is a testament to the pursuit of excellence that lies at the core of the Ferrari and LEGO Group ethos.”

— Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari Chief Design Officer, in the May 24, 2022 announcement
The launch announcement also confirms the Ferrari’s 1:8 scale and 59 cm length, while the current product page supplies the full 3,778-piece specification and feature list. You can read the announcement at The LEGO Group’s Ferrari Daytona SP3 newsroom article.

The Peugeot 9X8 (42156) is the focused choice: smaller scale, fewer pieces, Le Mans identity, hybrid-system modeling and luminous details. The Ferrari Daytona SP3 (42143) is the statement piece: 1:8 scale, 3,778 pieces, a moving-piston V12, an 8-speed sequential gearbox and more expansive bodywork.
Because both are retired, the final choice is not only Peugeot versus Ferrari. It is also sealed versus used, complete versus uncertain, and a seller with dependable returns versus a listing that merely looks cheap. Decide the subject and footprint first, then buy the exact set number in the best documented condition available in your region.
