The Lenovo Legion Go 2 with SteamOS is the better fit if you mainly play compatible Steam games and want a console-oriented interface; the Windows version is the more flexible choice for a handheld PC. Reported U.S. starting prices put SteamOS about $150 above Windows, and Lenovo says SteamOS models disable the fingerprint reader. The premium is difficult to judge on performance or battery life: direct SteamOS testing for this model had not been completed in the cited comparison.
U.S. starting prices: SteamOS costs more
Lenovo announced the Legion Go, Powered by SteamOS (8.8-inch, 2nd generation) with an estimated U.S. starting price of $1,199 and expected availability from June 2026. Lenovo’s CES 2026 announcement is an estimate, not a current retailer offer. A later Windows Central comparison reports a $1,049.99 starting price for Windows and a $1,199.99 starting MSRP for SteamOS.
These figures are close but not identical: Lenovo’s announcement estimate is $1,199, while Windows Central reports a $1,199.99 SteamOS MSRP. Treat both as reported U.S. reference prices, not verified October 2026 listings. Check the price and exact configuration in your region before buying.
What changes between the operating systems?
| Buying factor | SteamOS model | Windows model |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Players who primarily use compatible Steam games and prefer a game-console-oriented interface. | Players who want a general-purpose Windows PC as well as a handheld gaming system. |
| Games and launchers | Check compatibility for each game, launcher, anti-cheat system, and peripheral you rely on; the available evidence does not establish universal support. | Offers the broader Windows app environment, but check requirements for the specific games and launchers you use. |
| Fingerprint reader | Disabled on SteamOS models, according to Lenovo. | Available on Windows Legion Go models, according to Lenovo. |
| Direct performance and battery comparison | Not established by the cited comparison; its author said testing was not complete. | No like-for-like comparative result established by the cited comparison. |
SteamOS: a simpler path for a Steam-first library
Choose SteamOS if most of your playtime is in Steam and you value a handheld interface designed around gaming. That preference does not guarantee that every Steam title will work as expected: compatibility can depend on the game, anti-cheat, launcher, or connected device. Before choosing, check the titles you play most and any accessories or services you need.
#1 Best Overall
- MAX POWER, YOUR RULES – Play your way with the Lenovo Legion Go 2. Powered by an AMD Ryzen Z2 processor, a vibrant 8.8" 144Hz Lenovo PureSight OLED gaming display, and a massive 74Whr battery, it’s built to push further, game longer, and stay unplugged.
- MAX COOLING, MANUAL CONTROL – The Legion Coldfront thermal system is built to handle serious heat. Increased radiators and fan blade’s surface area improves the airflow without increasing the noise. Upgraded dual heat pipes distribute heat more efficiently to keep your rig powerful and precise.
- UNLOCK MULTIPLE WAYS TO PLAY – Experience total freedom with the Legion Truestrike controllers. In FPS mode, the right controller can be detached, docked and operated as a mouse, giving you the edge in every firefight.
- SPEED + IMMERSION – The OLED gaming panel combines blazing speed and visual depth in a single, immersive experience. Game without compromise aided by the ultra-fast response rates, perfect blacks, and vivid color.
- BUILT TO OUTLAST – The Legion Go 2 packs 74Whr of serious staying power. That means longer sessions, higher settings, and fewer compromises, whether you're gaming at full performance or tweaking settings on the go.
Windows Central expects SteamOS may use system resources more efficiently, but says it had not completed Legion Go 2 SteamOS performance or battery testing. That is a hypothesis, not evidence that this model runs games faster or lasts longer on a charge.
Windows: more general-purpose flexibility
Windows 11 is the better fit if you want to use the handheld as a broader PC, including Windows apps and launchers beyond a Steam-first setup. Its trade-off, as described in the cited comparison, is that handheld navigation is less console-like. Do not assume a particular non-Steam game requires Windows without checking that game’s compatibility and launcher requirements.

Shared hardware: confirm the exact SKU
Lenovo’s May 25, 2026 PSREF documents the Windows-designated Legion Go 8ASP2 platform. It lists an 8.8-inch WUXGA (1920 × 1200) multitouch OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme as an option, and soldered memory choices of 16GB or 32GB. The listed memory operates at LPDDR5X-8000; the platform limits modules rated LPDDR5X-8533 to that speed. SSD options include M.2 2242 and 2280 variants. These are platform specifications, not a promise that every configuration includes the top memory or storage option.
The PSREF also lists USB4 40Gbps USB-C connectivity, DisplayPort 2.1, USB power delivery, and USB-C docking support. Lenovo describes detachable controller use in handheld, FPS, and TV/docked modes. Its PSREF warns that specifications may differ by region and configuration; the SteamOS announcement does not enumerate every final regional SKU. Compare the exact local product listing rather than assuming every SteamOS model matches the Windows reference configuration. Lenovo PSREF

How to choose between them
- Compare exact local configurations. Check the current price, memory, storage, availability, warranty, and return terms for each SKU in your country; the prices cited above are U.S. starting figures, not live offers.
- Check your actual game library. Verify the games, launchers, anti-cheat systems, and peripherals you use on the OS you plan to buy. A broad label such as “Steam game” does not establish compatibility for every title.
- Decide how you will use the device. Favor SteamOS for a Steam-first, console-oriented experience; favor Windows if general-purpose PC flexibility is important.
- Account for the fingerprint-reader difference. Lenovo says the reader is disabled on SteamOS configurations and available on Windows models.
- Do not pay extra based on an unverified performance claim. Wait for direct, comparable Legion Go 2 testing if FPS or battery life is the deciding factor.
Is the SteamOS version worth the extra cost?
It may be worth the reported premium if the Steam-first interface is your priority and your games and devices work with SteamOS. If you need Windows flexibility or want the fingerprint reader, the Windows configuration better matches those needs. Because the cited performance comparison is incomplete and the reported figures are starting prices, neither establishes that SteamOS delivers better performance or value for every buyer.
